In the next, coming days Alpha was patient and went along with being confined to his room. The old man came every day, talking with him, telling him complex equations that he had never heard or seen before. By Ezekiel’s words; Only he has them and he never made them public. He never recorded them and whenever they were, he made sure to destroy everything related to it. Even the AIs that helped him calculate it. He was the first human he ever told this, still, he never let him write it down or record it. He had to solve them in his head every single time. He did find it weird but he complied as it was not that hard to do. At least for him. As those equations became more complex, after the third day, he realized something.

“This has the basics of how an AI works in them.” He said when Ezekiel came visiting him.

Alpha was sitting at his table, waiting and as soon as this door closed, he opened his mouth, drawing a small smile onto the old man’s wrinkled face.

“Yes.” He nodded, sitting down. “Creating an AI is part of it. A fragment that I let the world have. This is why I told you, I discovered the equation of God. It is the basis of life. Synthetic or organic. It doesn’t matter. I created the first AI and after centuries of work, continuing my calculations, I arrived at… you. I put together the team and set them to work. Even when you know the results it is hard to reach it. Practice sometimes beats theories.” He chuckled with a small cough.

“So… I am the solution to your… equation?”

“You are here… are you not?” He answered with another question.

“I don’t believe you.” Alpha said, looking into his eyes.

“That does not matter.” He replied, shaking his head. “The moment you were born, the second you have awoken from your sleep, everything was already set into motion.”

“...” Alpha always felt confused, watching and listening to him. Ezekiel’s strings were… bright. Clear and in complete harmony with each other. Whatever he said, whenever he said, was the truth. He never lied nor did he doubt anything he was saying to him. Yet speaking with him unnerved Alpha and he couldn’t explain why.

“This is my last visit.” He said, surprising him once again.

“Your brain worked much quicker than I anticipated. That is good.” He nodded to himself. “I need to get back and rest. I was out for way too long. Of course, that does not mean I won’t keep an eye on you, my child.”

“What will happen to me? To the others?”

“Nothing.” He said, chuckling softly, coughing again. “I already told you why I made you. I want you to grow to that potential. I am going to smooth everything over, as usual. Then you are going to continue learning, inventing and advancing our kind.  As soon as you are an adult you're going to receive your identity and get a position where you can start raising the social ladder and gain a name for yourself.”

“Excuse me?” He asked, now truly surprised, showing it on his face.

“What?” Ezekiel leaned forward. “You thought you would be kept here forever? No. I am just waiting for you to grow up. The Hegemony has many problems that need to be fixed. It became too big for its own good. It needs… reinforcing. Or it won’t survive another half a millennia.”

“You expect me to… do what, exactly?”

“Just be you.” He said, standing up. “Do what you feel right.” He smiled, leaning on his cane, starting to walk out. “I am old, I can’t tell you what to do. Especially because of who you are. What you are. I have confidence that you are going to come up with the correct solutions by yourself. Just when you learned about your friend’s alignment. That was a… marvelous solution to a problem, son.” He said softly and Alpa couldn’t help but shudder. He stood up immediately, trying to see through the old man but he just looked back at him with a smile still on his wrinkled face. “Keep working on the equations in your head. It will lead you to your true potential.” He said and then left. Never to reappear before him, ever again.

….

…..

A day later it was Marin who came and visited him. She was blushing, finding it hard to string words together as their eyes met. She opened her mouth to speak many times but failed to force any words out of her throat. What made her finally exclaim out loudly was when Alpha just walked up and hugged her close, firmly wrapping his hand around her body.

“I thought I would lose you…” He said softly and his words melted Marin, in almost a literal sense as her knees gave out and could do nothing, letting him hold her up. “Marin…” He said, after a minute of them embracing each other.

“Y-yes?” She asked, looking shy and turning red from top to bottom.

“I love you.”

“...” Marin froze in place hearing him but then she just remembered her hazy memory of that dream… which turned out it was not a dream at all. In the end she formed an innocent smile, returning the same answer he gave her that time. “I know.”

Alpha just chuckled, already expecting her answer but not her next action. Marin gently tiptoed, leaning in and clumsily kissing his lips. It was their first kiss, pressing their lips together for the first time, trying to figure out how to do it at all. It surprised Alpha so much, he fumbled and fell backwards, causing Marin to land on him as their foreheads were knocked together. They just looked at each other before both of them burst out laughing and trying once again, sharing a second, clumsy, little kiss, exploring together how to do it properly.

….

…..

Alpha was glued to the window of the slim, slick shuttle that was rising up from the moon, heading towards the space station, orbiting Earth. He was already a young adult, looking to be in his early twenties. His black hair reached down to his shoulders, combed backwards as his violet eyes were watching the Moon shrink down below them.

“You look like a kid!” Marin laughed, sitting in front of him, watching him with a grin. She also grew up by now, exceptionally well, in all meanings of the word. Her figures exceeded her mothers as she blossomed into a beautiful flower. Her long, red hair was kept in a ponytail as her emerald eyes twinkled in the light of the Sun, peeking out from behind the Earth’s round edges.

“It is my first time leaving, okay?” He answered, still watching the changings of the scenery.

“I am still surprised…” Lizzy interjected, sitting next to her daughter, reading a datapad. “Did you choose the name?” She asked, but Alpha just shook his head.

“It was me!” Her daughter chuckled. “Alfy is a good nickname for Alfonse! Nobody would question it! By the way, I am more surprised that we were allowed to leave with him!”

“I wouldn’t go without you two accompanying me.” Alpha said, finally leaning back on his chair, looking at them as the automated shuttle picked up speed. “So, when that old man sent word, I answered back immediately.”

“I still don’t know who it is. Is he even real?” Marin asked, raising her eyebrows.

“He should be.” Lizzy said, shrugging. “I don’t think Alfy would make something like that up… and…” She murmured, lowering the datapad in her hands. “All three of us are getting a job at the same R&D firm? Alpha being the lead engineer and us his assistant? With new identities? With a fully developed background from birth to both of your diplomas? Damn… We had commendations from prestigious universities and companies for this position! None that I even worked for, not to mention you two!”

“He did say he is going to take care of anything. I assume he was ready to let me out.” Alpha chuckled, not really bothered by it. “I just don’t know what we are going to be assigned to!”

“Probably something weird.” Marin shrugged. “So instruct me well, okay? I am not good with math… I’m fine if I am relegated to bringing you coffee or biscuits while you two work on the hard things!” She said, shaking her head.

“I am a genetics expert not fit to work on machines…” Lizzy sighed softly then she just grinned, teasing her daughter. “Hehe~ Maybe we should get you a maid costume?”

“Then he wouldn’t be able to concentrate!” Marin replied, forming a proud smile.

“That…” Alpha said, looking at her, letting his eyes wander around her figure which made Marin even more prouder, grinning from ear to ear. “Is true.”

“Heh…” Lizzy chuckled, watching them. “I am getting jealous of you two, you know? Anyway! I am going to make sure you two hormone filled youngsters focus on the tasks at hand!”

“What, you are still young, mom! You may even find someone you like!” Marin said happily.

“I’m fine!” She laughed, “I’m just sad that I barely could say goodbye to the rest of the team. We were family for many years!”

“What is going to happen to them?” Alpha asked, looking out the window again, watching the huge, ring-shaped station getting closer and closer.

“They all got their new identities.” Lizzy said. “And a hefty amount of pension. Some, like Fizzy, went ahead and bought a house on Earth. Some will never work at all, ever again. Some may find a new home at another research station. Who knows… It is weird!” She sighed loudly. “It was my whole life until this point. I never thought it would end one day…”

“Just don’t look at it like that, mom!” Marin said, leaning against her. “Take it as a new start instead!”

“Mmhm…” She nodded, gently stroking her head. “You may be right…”

….

…..

Arriving at the Prometheus Research and Development Station they were led to their future home, a pretty luxurious and well equipped apartment. It had a panoramic view of the Earth and not just multiple bedrooms but its own library and workshop. Looking around, Marin quickly made herself home before they were visited by a man named Keelan. He was a short and stubby man in his mid-forties with a bald head and a bushy, brown beard. Looking up at Alpha he was furrowing his brows, just standing at their door, with hands in his white coat’s pockets.

“I can’t believe you are this young.” He said with his low and reverberating baritone voice.

“Does my age pose any problems?” Alpha asked with a smile, already knowing that with that one sentence, the man just cut away any sympathy Marin is going to have towards him in the upcoming years.

“We will see about that.” He said, glancing at the other two for a brief moment. “My name is Keelan, I am the lead engineer on this station and your de facto boss. Have you been briefed yet?”

“No.” Alpha answered.

“Haaahh… figures.” Keelan groaned, playing with his beard. “Come with me then.” He said, turning around and as Alpha was about to follow him, with Marin in tow, Keelan just waved his hand, without looking back. “Only you!”

“Hmf… jerk.” Marin stopped, snorting loud enough so he could hear her but Keelan was unperturbed.

“I’ll be back.” Alpha said, looking back at his shoulder while Marin just flashed a thumbs up at him.

“Terminate him!”

….

…..

Alpha was led away casually by his new boss while they were going through different levels of Prometheus Station. While walking through the corridors, seeing the many people scurrying around, doing their own tasks, he already counted more than a thousand souls in his vicinity alone. As their elevator was going upwards, Keelan started to explain it to him.

“There are around 10.000 people living here and working daily. 99% of them are laborers, tasked to make sure the station is up and running at all-times. The likes of you and me are the minority.”

“I guessed so.” Alpha nodded, leaning against the elevator’s wall. “Fills you with the feeling of superiority, doesn't it?” He asked, watching Keelan’s strings change their colors.

“Those are just facts.” He said, stepping out the elevator after it stopped but he was agreeing with his words, completely. It made Alpha shake his head while following him, already starting to get a grip on his character.

In a conference room, four other people were waiting for them to arrive, three men and one woman. All of them were past their 40s. Seeing how young their new partner is going to be, all of them had the same question in their eyes. How can someone get his position amongst them?

“Introductions can wait.” Keelan said, raising his hands and the lights went off immediately. From the oval table in the middle, a 3D model of a complex generator rose up. “For now, just watch and get a feel for how professionals work.” Keelan said as he started to discuss with his colleagues the problems they had run into.

Alpha was patient, standing there, without sitting down. Crossing his arms he was watching the spinning image of a generator, called the Abyss Battery. They were trying to convert dark-matter into an energy source. He only glanced at it before realizing it was missing many of its core components. This was obviously a test because the parts that they were obfuscating from him would make it hard to build something like this. He only sighed loudly, which silenced the five, sitting at the table.

“Do you have something to add to the discussion?” Keelan asked, with an annoyed voice that they were interrupted.

“Yes.” Alpha said calmly. “I know this is you testing me, but this is an amateur way of doing it.” He said, then he started to fire off his mouth; He listed ten things in quick succession. Things they needed to add and modify and how obvious it was that they left it out on purpose. After finishing he just sighed once again. “Call me when there is some real work to do. I am not your underling nor your attendant.” Then he left, not even bothering with them anymore. What he didn’t realize was that all of the five were looking at him with their eyes falling out of their sockets. They only regained their bearings after the door closed behind him.

“What…?!” The woman stood up with a shriek while Keelan started to stutter.

“F-f-fuck! Write it down! Write it down!” He scrambled to bring up a holographic keyboard and type everything down that Alpha just said, same with the rest…
