It has been forty minutes since I arrived at school. I was left in the middle of the huge, seemingly never ending, schoolyard with the rest of the first years.
Looking around, nearly everyone is hugging and kissing their parents goodbye or moving luggage around. I almost laugh in self-pity, as I realize I'm the only one standing all by myself with two old ass luggage bags. They weigh almost triple my weight, and I don't even remember packing the second bag.
My parents had work, so my beloved brother, Rapha, was forced to accompany me on my first day of high school. He was 'forced' because my parents practically guilt-tripped him into doing so. He also made it very clear that he would rather be anywhere but here. As soon as we were out of my parents' sight, he immediately ditched me to hang out with his buddies without so much as a "Bye", or a "Good luck".
I should have expected this. Once he reached school gates, he no longer wanted anything to do with me. Whether that was because he thought he was too old for his little sister or if he just didn't have time for me, I'm not sure. He's a senior after all.
He specifically told me this morning that he didn't want anyone to know we're siblings. He said something about how - now that he's the basketball team's captain - I shouldn't ruin it for him by making a joke of our family name.
I mean, he always thinks I sully his name, no matter what I do. Maybe he's right, but it's not like I do it on purpose or anything. I wish he could see that.
I take a moment to breathe, inspecting my surroundings as I do so. I’m paranoid that my mood will crash if I get too in my head.
As I glance around, I note that the schoolyard is pretty large. There is a stone pathway which stems from the base of the gate in front of the school. The path was made from different shades of gray stones and reached a marble fountain, which stood glorious and tall in the center of the schoolyard.
Upon further inspection, I notice that the gray stone pathway is one of four paths that meet at the fountain. As I follow each of the remaining paths with my gaze, I realize that they each lead to one of the buildings in the far distance. Although, I can't tell which building is which because of the light morning fog. The rest of the schoolyard is covered in freshly watered grass and medium sized bushes on the sides of the stone ways.
"Name?" A deep voice asks from behind, removing me from whatever trance I was in.
I quickly turn around and am met with the bored faces of a boy and a girl who are sitting behind a small desk, each with a clipboard in hand.
"Anika Stewart", I say, trying my best to keep my voice steady .
"From?" He asks, not expending any energy to look up at me as he scribbles down - what I assume to be personal details - on the paper attached to his clipboard.
"Uhh- California?" I replied with hesitation.
"He meant the name of your dimension sweetie." The brunette sitting beside him says, rolling her eyes.
I drop my head and start playing with my fingers, suddenly wanting to disappear from this situation immediately. "I don't know."
The brunette shifts towards the boy, leaning over his shoulder as she says, "That's probably terra."
"Shouldn’t have expected anything different from Stewart's sister." the boy says, a smirk now playing on his lips.
Great. Wait till Rapha hears about this, he'll definitely kick my ass.
"You can head to your dormitory now." The brunette dismisses me and immediately calls for the next first year to state their name and their dimension. I take a glance at my luggage, trying to figure out how I'm going to take them to the dormitory without breaking a bone or two while doing so.
In a blink of an eye, my luggage started flying toward one of the many buildings scattered around the school. Since I didn't know where the dormitory was, I started running after my flying luggage, praying I wouldn't lose sight of it.
Eventually, the flying luggage freezes in mid-air for a second, before not so gracefully hitting the ground. Looking up, I'm met with a tall brick building which is decorated with moss and several black-framed windows. It seems not to be that far from the fountain too. For some reason, I feel that is a good thing. Maybe I'll have less walking to do to get to my classes.
The long stone stairway leading towards the tall maple double doors of the building, seems far too grand for a dormitory. Pushing that thought aside, I quickly drag my luggage up the stairs and eagerly open the glorious maple doors.
Looking around, the interior is nicely decorated, for the most part; an exception being the awful walls - that are covered with stained floral wallpaper - which makes me nauseous just looking at them. The lobby is filled with two milky sofas, a coffee table and floor lamps. There are a couple old magazines laid out on the coffee table, as well as a torn, gray rug that rests underneath the sofas. On both sides of the lobby, wooden stairs lead up toward the rooms.
I had to wait about five minutes in the line to get my keys from the receptionist. C4 was engraved on the keychain. I wish I'd asked the receptionist directions, that way I wouldn't have to go all the way up and down the stairs to find the room. Who would've thought C means third floor? Or am I too dumb to realize that? Probably the latter.
The third-floor hallway has floral wallpaper just like the rest of the building. There are pickled oak doors on both sides of the hallway with little space between them that are decorated with sconces right next to each door, lighting up the hallway.
The door to my room is jammed, requiring me to actually put in effort in order to get the damn thing open. Once I'm inside, I see that both sides of the room have beds, nightstands, built-in closets and bookshelves. The floor is covered with maple parquet and the wallpaper is light blue.

A darker skinned girl is laying on the bed to the right of the room, her black curly hair covering her face as she's busy using her phone; she looks quite serious. That must mean that I'm stuck with the left side of the room.
I quickly walk to my side of the room and start unpacking my luggage silently.
After a couple minutes, she puts her phone aside and sits on the edge of her bed. I can feel the pressure of her staring at me, but I force myself to continue staring at the folded clothes which sit at the bottom of my luggage bag.
"First year?" The silence finally breaks after a few long, agonizing minutes.
I turn around and nod, smiling sheepishly. "Is it that obvious?"
"You seemed nervous like most first years. But since your parents aren't here, I had doubts if you were one." she giggles.
Okay. So my roommate isn't a first year, and not only did I just make the worst first impression ever, but she's also probably going to mock whatever dumb shit I do.
She casually strolls over towards me and sticks her hand out. "I'm Kiyana, it's nice to meet you."
She's extremely pretty. Her oval face, plump lips, and light brown eyes that match her chocolate skin, make me feel self-conscious of my pale skin, blue eyes and freckle covered face.
"I'm Anika, the pleasure is mine."
With a knock on the door, Kiyana rushes to open it. A slim, blue haired girl jumps into Kiyana's embrace as soon as she opens the door.
"Neela?" Kiyana squeals.
"Do you like my new hair?" She asks through her laughter, and they both giggle.
"I love it! It suits you perfectly!" Kiyana compliments her.
I don't mean to be rude, so I keep my head down and unpack the rest of my stuff silently. They both sit on Kiyana's bed and keep up the talk about Neela's blue hair, and the things they missed while being away on summer vacation.
I'm halfway done putting my clothes in the dresser when Kiyana suddenly jumps off her bed. "Oh gosh I totally forgot! Neela this is my new roomie, Anika" Neela nods and I smile.
"Nice to meet you newbie" Neela says, and just then I notice a cute little beauty mark right under her left eye. She has a silver piercing in her eyebrow, and I can't help but to stare at the piece of metal - that I somehow witnessed on her tongue - while she talks.
"Do you need help with those?" Kiyana asks and comes closer to my side of the room.
"Thanks, I'm kind of done with everything" I say as I pull out a couple posters. I thought maybe some decorations helps to make it feel more like home. I even plan on taking care of a plant or something in the corner of my side.
While I'm trying to stick them to the wall next to my bed, Kiyana gasps aloud and literally makes my heart skip a beat. "Anika don't tell me..!" She yells and holds my hands dramatically, and stops me.
I'm seriously confused. Did I do something wrong? Are we not supposed to have posters and stuff in our rooms? Did I say something to upset her?
"Kiyana calm the hell down, you scared the shit outta her" Neela chuckles and lays on Kiyana's bed. She still has her boots on, I wonder if it's fine?
"Shut up! She's Harris young's fan TOO!!" Kiyana hugs me and I'm shocked by her sudden affection. "Welcome to HYS club" she giggles and pulls back.
"And what does that stand for?" I ask, still confused but amused by her actions.
"Harris Young's simpers" Neela says and rolls her eyes; and all of us burst into laughter.
