The two stared at each other whilst Long Di was about to stab him in the head, killing him.

  “Well, this is awkward.”

  ****

The giant, upon seeing Long Di’s current action, spoke up, “Are you going to ki-”

“Smashing a bug,” Long Di blurted out.

The giant was startled at Long Di’s answer, “A-A bug?”

  “Yes,” Long Di responded.

“You’re going to kill a bug?”

  “… Yes.”

“And to do that, you’re going to use a bronze saber that I’m pretty sure still has my blood on it?”

  “Yes.”

    “Final answer?”

  “Yes…”

  “…”

“So I’m just going to kill you now,” Long Di announced.

“The f…!” The giant nearly choked on his own astonishment, “Why would you lie if you were just going to tell me that you’re going to kill me!? You could have saved us the trouble!”

“I was frightened when you opened your eyes,” Long Di replied.

“Don’t lie to me! Your face didn’t change one bit, your face is either dead or you weren’t surprised, and I’m inclined to believe the latter!”

  “Uh-huh…”

“Don’t Uh-huh me… w-why are you lowering the blade!?” the giant shouted upon seeing the blade reaching even closer.

“To kill you. I’m going to stab you in the forehead and then kill you.”

The giant was left speechless at Long Di’s complete 180 and blatant admission to killing him.

“You realise you’re going to kill me!?” the giant shouted once more.

“Your grasp over the side effects of death are worthy of praise.” Long Di pointed out.

The giant then glared fiercely at Long Di, “Do you know who I am!?”

“Try something else,” Long Di said as he brought the saber’s tip to the giant’s forehead.

  “Hmph! I am-”

  Pu Ci!

Blood ran down the giant’s forehead, silencing him as he stared into Long Di’s emotionless eyes.

“Try. Something. Else,” Long Di said, enunciating each word.

The giant was shocked! The bronze saber broke the skin and drew his blood. Long Di only had to put in just a modicum of effort, and his life would be forfeited.

He could see that Long Di didn’t give a flying rat’s double ass who he was. Long Di only kept him alive for this long simply because he willed it.

“Hahahahaahahahaahaa!” The giant then broke out into raucous laughter.

His laughter caused his exhausted body to shake. He even coughed up broken pieces of flesh as he guffawed.

It took a while for the giant to calm down. He then at Long Di with renewed vigour, even though his body was all kinds of messed up.

“I like you!” the giant roared with a smile. “What’s your name?”

  “Long Di,” he answered flatly.

“I like you Long Di! I’m Xiong! You can call me Big brother Xiong!” the giant, named Xiong, shouted.

“I’m not calling you that,” Long Di shot him down immediately.

“Brother Xiong it is!” Xiong dropped the ‘big’ from the title.

“You’re a bounce-back-from-your-losses kind of guy, aren’t you?” Long Di pointed out.

“Whatever brother Long says, it’s probably true! Hahahahaha,” Xiong erupted into laughter once more, losing a pound of flesh in the process.

“Forcing me to commit fratricide, huh? Oh well. Quick question, by the way, your body is bereft of somatic essence at the moment, right?” Long Di asked something that was on his mind for a while.

“Are you asking me if my body’s all out of somatic essence?” Xiong asked, wanting to be sure.

“That’s roughly what bereft means, yes,” Long Di clarified.

“Then yes, my body’s bereft of somatic essence,” Xiong answered.

“Then how are you functioning?” Long Di finally asked.

This was a logical question. Long Di was well aware that Xiong ‘ignited’ his somatic essence earlier in the fight. This was a move that was similar to lighting a fuse and setting his somatic essence ablaze.

One would experience an explosive increase in strength, far above their current level. In some instances, it could even allow one to fight above their realm!

This was not something to look down on. The gap of an entire realm was like the difference between night and day. One Martial Master could easily best ten Martial Adepts. From this alone, it was easy to see just how incredible this power increase was.

Of course, as one would expect, there was a drawback. After all, one cannot call on such power and not have to pay an accompanying price.

One would not only have to deal with an insane rate of energy usage, which would severely limit the time that one can spend in such a state, the damage one’s body would suffer was a huge problem as well.

By igniting the somatic essence, this energy, which is normally violent in nature, would become even more rampant. The damage it would levy internally as it ran wild was in no way an injury that one could recover from easily.

Blood vessels would rupture, muscles would tear themselves apart, qi meridians would shatter while internal organs would fail from the strain. The worst case of igniting one’s somatic essence was death, whilst the best case was being bedridden for months to even years.

Plus, there was also the somatic essence overdraft to deal with, which would render the body powerless for an elongated period of time.

Long Di asking him how he was still able to function was equivalent to asking him how he was still having a thriving relationship with life. He was pretty sure the two would have broken up by now.

“Well, what I used was the secret move of my cultivation technique,” Xiong explained. “It basically acts similar to a somatic essence ignition, but instead of using everything, it forcefully leaves a small amount of it in my body to not only protect my vital organs, but also allows me to regain consciousness relatively quickly.”

“You’re telling me everything with little qualms,” Long Di advised.

Xiong rolled his eyes. “Well, you asked, so I don’t see why I shouldn’t answer. Hey if you’re gonna kill me you should do it.”

“Hey, are you a liar? Do you lie?” Long Di asked out of nowhere.

“It’s a coward’s language,” Xiong said with disdain.

Long Di thought about this and thought to himself that that was a good line. He made up his mind that he would no longer lie going forward.

“If you live past today, will you still try to kill me?” Long Di asked.

“How could I kill my brother!? You look down on me!” Xiong roared with anger.

Long Di was speechless when he heard this, “You’re running full throttle with this brother business, aren’t you?”

“You don’t want me as a brother?” Xiong asked in a sombre tone.

“I already have a brother,” Long Di admitted before looking up at the sky with a contemplative gaze. ‘I wonder how he’s doing right now? I want my cat back.’

“Then… is he stronger than me?” Xiong questioned.

Long Di thought about this for a while, “Based on what little I’ve heard, he might be stronger than me.”

Xiong’s eyes brightened when he heard this, “Really!? Then I can’t wait to fight him! Then he will be the first brother, you the second brother cuz you beat me, and I will be the third brother!”

“Uhm,” Long Di raised a hand to object to this ranking. “I’ll be the first brother.”

“But you’re weaker. Are we not doing this based on strength?”

“Yeah, but… listen, our relationship isn’t simple. He will agree to this, trust me,” advised Long Di.

  “Fine,” Xiong shrugged.

“Oh, you can shrug now,” Long Di noticed. Before this, Xiong couldn’t lift a finger, but in just a little time, he was capable of small movements. Maybe he could even wiggle his big toe if he really tried to.

“My somatic essence wasn’t over-drafted, so it’s coming back at a steady rate, but I’m still pretty banged up,” he winced in pain as he said this as if he was trying to make a larger movement but instead failed as a result.

“So brother Xiong…” Long Di assented to his request and called him brother, bringing a smile to the latter’s face.

“I’m not going to kill you,” he advised. “I may be petty, a bit of an asshole, a prick and above all… meh, buuut… I still don’t mind having a brother. So I won’t kill you.”

Xiong’s face brightened even more upon hearing this. He basically made up his mind to die at Long Di’s hands, but not dying was pretty neat, too.

“We’ll be brothers for life!” Xiong announced.

“Neat…” Long Di said indifferently. Suddenly, he closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again. “Yeeeeeah, we need to leave like right now,” Long Di advised.

Xiong’s brows furrowed when he heard this, “Why? I still need to recover.”

  “Well, the Zhendong beetle is…”

  Rumble!

The ground trembled before going still.

“What’s happening!?” Xiong was confused by the sudden tremor.

“Hold that thought,” Long said. He took up the bronze saber once more and hurled that thing into the air.

  “Why did you-”

“Why did you let it go?” Long Di asked when he heard Xiong’s unfinished question.

“Let what go?” the giant questioned, finding it hard to keep up with Long Di verbally.

“Your thoughts. I still need you to hold em,” Long Di said as he kept a close eye on the saber as it arced through the air.

“Long Di!” A shout from the distance came over and both Long Di and Xiong looked over to see a group running over.

Long Di could instantly see who it was and got up from his resting spot. “Looks like you’ll be fine. Take care brother Xiong, we’ll meet in the future I’m sure.”

Xiong was confused as heck, not knowing what was going on.

  Boom!

The ground exploded without warning, shocking everyone but Long Di whole expected this long ago.

“I really need to finish that bestiary,” he said to himself.

The beetle looked around for a moment before its gaze focused on Long Di, and as if it met its mortal enemy, as it made a beeline straight for him.

Using his spiritual force, he froze the beetle in place and counted in his mind.

  ‘Three… Two… One…’

As the count down completed, the bronze saber fell and stabbed through the gap in the joints that connect the head to the rest of its body.

  “Screeee!!!!!”

An ear-piercing scream rang out in the debut of its pain. Long Di calmly turned his attention to Xiong while the screech reverberated in the background.

“So I’m gonna go. I knew it was alive all this time and didn’t want to wait for it, but here I am. Thanks a lot for that, brother. I’ll get rid of it for you though, but we need to fight again in the future.”

Saying this, Long Di sped off in the direction of the Zhendong beetle and leapt through the air before retrieving his saber eliciting another screech that shook the senses.

“Do you have to be so loud?” Long Di placed a finger in his ear to wipe out a nonexistent ear wax before he took off in the direction of his friends.

The group stared at Long Di and the massive stone beetle that chased him relentlessly with a complicated expression.

‘We should have left him to die,’ was the thought that ran through everyone’s heads at the same time.

“Let’s go everyone,” Long Di said.

  “Screw you!”
