‘We should have left him to die,’ was the lukewarm thought that ran through everyone’s heads at the same time.

“Let’s go everyone,” Long Di said.

  “Screw you!”

  ****

A giant stone beetle was chasing a carriage being pulled by two donkeys. As of now, a boy was attacking it with a particular set of moves by leaping towards it before retreating by landing back on the carriage.

As he made his latest return to the roof of the carriage…

  “Long Di, I hate you!”

Of course, the boy was Long Di.

“Hold that thought,” Long Di absent-mindedly responded before leaping back towards the stone beetle.

“First Variation Nine Tempers,” Long Di whispered to himself before an explosion of sparks erupted when his saber danced upon the body of the beetle.

  Pling! Plang! Plink!

A solid three moves landed on the beetle with the fourth slash coming up short as its body was covered with marks and cracks that only served to enrage it.

Finishing this set of moves, he landed back on the roof of the carriage, where Yaomu Shou was waiting for him.

  “This is all your fault!!”

“Your encouragement fuels me,” was his only response to her before he leapt off the roof to attack the beetle.

  Vrrrm!

Its pincers vibrated as it readied itself to launch an attack of its own.

Seeing this from a mile away, Long Di used his saber to block it before he quickly let go of it.

  Zrrrrm!!!!

The blow landed on the saber, causing its ruinous vibration to run amok within. The air suddenly exploded as the vibrations that travelled throughout ran their course before dispersing outwards.

As all of it took place within the space of a single breath, Long Di quickly grabbed the saber back before aiming it at the beetle before uttering the line that now signalled its demise.

  “First variation, Nine tempers.”

The saber lit up with the soft glow of saber intent as the veins on Long Di’s hands came to life under the force of his raging somatic essence roared furiously within him.

  K-Kling…!

A delivery of slashes found the beetle. This time, however, instead of leaving only gashes and marks, each slash cleaved through its stone comprised body with devastating effects!

The beetle could finally see that its safety was at risk and wanted to turn away to escape but it was too late!

The attacks came too fast and too furiously!

The beetle was unworthy of the murderous tempering that it suffered.

Sweat beaded down Long Di’s head as he struggled to breach the third slash to land the fourth.

  Bang!

  “One.”

  Crash!

  “Two.”

  Bam!

  “Three.”

Long Di stared at the beetle and the saber that was following the path of the Severing Mundane Forging Heaven’s First variation.

However, Long Di could see that this saber strike, though it was much closer than all other times, was not going to land.

The fourth slash was going to fail once more.

  “Crap.”

Long Di couldn’t help feeling a bit disappointed as he went through the motions for the technique. Seeing that the fourth strike was about to fail, he abandoned it mid execution as he switched to his other move.

  ‘Earth Severance!’

The saber danced in his grip before both hands held it overhead while the somatic essence travelled through the meridians according to the technique before it was channelled into the saber.

The saber was swung down and the somatic essence invaded the stone beetle’s body causing an egregious crack to erupt on its body that ran the entire length, effectively cleaving the monster in two!

  B-Boom!

The two pieces fell heavily as Long Di landed back on the carriage’s roof as it rocketed along an unbeaten path.

“You still suck!” Yaomu Shou pouted with crossed arms.

A large fist-sized grey stone that was being carried by an invisible force made its way over to Long Di.

“That’s the Beast Xin of the Zhendong Beetle?” she asked after seeing him grab it with no surprise.

“Yeah,” he nodded. “Is there anything we can do with it?” he asked.

“It has a lot of uses, actually, but nothing you have knowledge of,” she replied.

“I see.” he placed it in his storage ring before looking out in the distance. “Is that Thousand Emo Valley?”

There was an odd dark structure a fair distance away. Two mountains that towered straight into the sky could be seen where grey clouds enveloped the peaks.

There appeared to be some buildings built within the middle of it all the way through.

“That’s Thousand Emo Valley alright,” Yaomu Shou clarified.

“Is the giant stone beetle gone!?” Xiannu Liang’s voice came from within the carriage.

“Speaking of giants,” Yaomu Shou smacked her small fist in her hand as if she just remembered something. “Who was the big guy I saw lying on the ground beside you before everything went all DEFCON 1?”

“Did you just say DEFCON 1?” Long Di questioned her. “How do you even know what it means?”

“I heard you use it once,” Yaomu Shou replied.

“Okay, yeah, but I never explained what it meant,” Long Di countered.

“True, but I was able to extrapolate the intention you brought across by putting it in a similar sentence. Did I not use it right?” asked Yaomu Shou.

“You’re not stupid are you?” Long Di was able to look genuinely surprised even though his expression didn’t change in the slightest.

Yaomu Shou bristled at Long Di’s tone. “Why are you so surprised!?”

“Past examples,” Long Di answered. “Is that why everyone has been using these phrases?” he asked.

“I guess, some of them are really catchy so we don’t mind using them,” Yaomu Shou admitted.

“A lot of things make so much sense now,” Long Di said to himself.

Truthfully, Long Di started to realise that some of the phrases everyone was saying didn’t match this era in the slightest. Now he knew where this was all coming from.

It was him. Plus, they used it even if they didn’t know what it was for.

“Don’t try to change the subject!” Yaomu Shou wasn’t going to get swept away in Long Di’s professionalism as far as changing the subject was concerned. “Who was the big guy?”

  “My brother,” he replied deadpan.

“Y-Your brother!? You have a brother!? He’s your brother!? Should we not go back for him!?” she was shocked at this sudden revelation.

“Yes, yes, yes, and no, exactly in that order,” replied Long Di.

  “W-Wait, why no-”

“Feng Yu, can you see Thousand Emo Valley ahead?” Long Di asked.

“Yes, I can!” a shout came from the carriage’s head.

Yaomu Shou, on the other hand, was undaunted and wanted answers, “Don’t try to change the subject!”

Long Di could care less and continued his conversation with Feng Yu, “Do you see that missile heading towards us?”

“A what!?” Feng Yu and Yaomu Shou yelled.

At this point, a screeching sound came from above. Everyone looked above and saw a round object rocketing through the sky towards them.

Suddenly, two ears popped out, followed by a tail that now trailed behind it.

Everyone stared at the phenomenon in disbelief. Long Di, in particular, had a peculiar look on his face as the strange object neared them.

  “It couldn’t be,” he whispered.

“Couldn’t be what?” Yaomu Shou asked when she heard him muttering under his breath.

“I-I think it’s… a-a… I can’t believe it,” as Long D’s gaze lingered, his expression actually warmed upon this realisation.

Yaomu Shou looked up and its features were finally coming into view.

“Hold on… Don’t tell me!” Yaomu Shou’s face paled when she saw what it was that was bearing down on them.

“Oh no, it’s that accursed infernal thing! What are we, cursed!?” Yaomu Shou was frantic! “Feng Yu, head for the city! Full speed!” she bellowed, followed by a sharp increase in the speed.

“What am I missing here?” Long Di was rightfully confused at her sudden apprehension. “It’s not gonna try to rape us, is it?”

“Assholes!” Feng Yu’s shout came from the carriage.

“That’s not an acceptable answer that makes sense. It’s got the subject, but I need a verb. Work with me here. This is rare but I’m feeling mighty uncomfortable right now.” Long Di was looking around for answers.

Thousand Emo Valley was erecting its defences, for it could see the calamity that was falling from the sky.

Alarms were blaring as the valley came to life! From a distance, everyone could see how gates were rising from the ground to grant some semblance of protection.

“Faster!!!” Yaomu Shou was almost foaming at the mouth at this point.

Suddenly, a sound that struck fear into everyone’s soul (except Long Di) and even sent the Super Donkeys into a frenzy echoed out.

  “Meow!”
