They were greeted by dragon fire, which was blocked by a barrier. As one, they ran through the door and shut it behind themselves.
"Are you trying to get us killed, vampire?" Jean shouted; fists balled.
"What? First time seeing a dragon?" Norrix was smirking down on the archer, and even Leander was beginning to doubt the vampire.
"What is in that room?" Leander asked, looking at Norrix. Because, if it was something like a couple of coins, they shouldn't risk their lives.
"I can feel something that is rich in mana. It could be the dungeon core," Morris spoke, head bowed. They all turned to look at him.
"If the dungeon core is guarded by a dragon, and we bypass it..." Alklair let his words hang in the air. No one wanted to leave the dungeon core intact.
Armaros got a determined look on his face and he placed a barrier around himself.
"I am going in," the dungeon core said. He knew that, even if his body was destroyed, he was not going to die. His dungeon core crystal was around Leander's neck, underneath the iron clad armor. Armaros was safe.
"Don't be silly, Armaros. You can't take on a dragon!" Florifel snapped. Sure, Armaros had more mana than most. But he was just human.
"There is something about me that you have to know, seeing as we are a platoon," Armaros spoke. From the corner of his eye, he could see the members of the Try Hard Party shake their heads, but he ignored them. "I am a dungeon core...the hamster dungeon core, to be precise."
The Budding Lilies gaped at him. They did not try to turn away, and that heartened Armaros.
"As far as I am concerned, I am immortal as long as my crystal is whole. And it is around Leander's neck. Safe as it can be. I am the only one that can bring down that dragon without killing it. This dungeon core is vile. It doesn't care about its children. Such a bad parent has to be punished," Armaros clarified, and the girls nodded.
"So, all those times you asked men to have children with you was not with adoption in mind? You can create children. From thin air?" Lilia had never understood why Armaros paid so much attention to men and none to girls. Well, she had figured that he might be gay. But, now things made sense.
"I will have a pack of children, one day. With those four and a Naga," Armaros said with a smile. His lovers shifted in their boots. They had not given that much thought. Children meant retirement, and they wanted to go on adventures for as long as possible.
"Armaros..." Dorian whined, but Armaros scrunched up his nose at him.
"I didn't say that we are getting the children today or tomorrow! But, one day, when the time is right, and we became wary of adventuring?" Armaros then grinned, his eyes twinkling, and he opened the door again.

"Wait!" Armaros heard Leander shout. The dungeon core shut the iron door behind him and placed a locking rune on it. It won't hold platoon 23 for long. But, maybe, it would be enough to give him a chance to save the dragon.
Said black beast was staring at him. As dragons went, this one looked like a toddler. Armaros found it adorable. It was as big as the ceiling allowed, and Armaros feared that it had become stunted from hunger and living in the closed space.
"Hello," Armaros shouted over the sound of the dragon fire. His barrier began to crack around him, and he knew he needed to act fast. "Do you want to switch contracts? I will treat you better than this dungeon. I live at a farm, and there is a forest next to it. You will have plenty of open space to grow."
"He...speaks?" The dragon growled and Armaros grinned. The dragon had understood him. The hard part was over.
"Why, yes. I am a dungeon core, too. But, my specialty are hamsters. Do you know what a hamster is? They are small, with cute, fluffy butts. They come in different colors, but I like ginger hamsters the most. Like my Pumpkin and Fluffs," the dragon was staring at Armaros like the dungeon core was insane.
"Open spaces?" The dragon asked, and Armaros nodded.
"We have a forest and ten acres of fields. Bigger than this chamber by far. And, I will bring you treasure from my quests, so you can start a hoard," at the last suggestion, the dragon's eyes blazed with greed.
"My own hoard..." he said, wistfully. "How big of a hoard are we talking about?"
"There are two garnets on a statue in the dungeon. They can be yours, once we get them out safely," Armaros suggested. The dragon snorted and moved its bulk to the side.
"Look at what I already have. How could you temp me with garnets?" There was a small, almost pitiful, pile of coins on the floor. And a single crown on top of them.
"Think in the long term. You start with this," Armaros pointed at the hoard that the dragon had been guarding. "Get the garnets. And a bit of more treasure after each quest. And, one day, you will have an enviable hoard."
The dragon looked at the small hoard, which would have been enough to see a civilian through their lifetime, and sighed.
"I suppose you are right. I, Ebony, accept your contract," just as he said that, the door swung open, and the platoon piled inside the cavern, ready to fight. "Should I kill them all, master?"
"They are friends, Ebony. From now on, it is your priority to see them safely through quests. Because you, the best and smartest dragon there is, are the new battle companion of the Try Hard Party!" Ebony blinked. Try Hard Party? Why wasn't it Gold Getting Party or Big Hoard Party. No matter, the dungeon core had promised him riches. Ebony would hold him to that. If he did not, well, farms and fields were flammable.
