-Migni Pov-

Evighet is a kingdom on the continent of Glacies, an enormous land of ice located between the Eastern Ocean and the Western Continent.

It's a cold place where snow falls close to all year, with little to no vegetation. I was born in a town far from the capital, its names was Mor.

Every day was a fight for survival, as food wasn't easily available.

But the biggest problem, with difference, were the demons.

The Demon Continent is close to the frontiers of Evighet. So day after day, we had to defend our village against their attacks that just keep augmenting more and more.

Demons weren't a really strong opponent for us, our bodies are naturally stronger than the average human and a big part of our population are adventurers. Yet, their non-stop attacks were still too much to handle.

When I turned 7, the inevitable happened, our town fell. Not because of the incessant demon attacks, but by human mercenaries.

While we were fighting a group of demons, around 100 of them appeared and attacked the town.

My mother escaped with me and my twin brother, she arrived to hide us in the basement. Using magic, she made sure that the adventurers didn't discover us.

Thanks to a small crack, we could see how she, as exhausted as she was, fought for her life giving her all.

In the end, a blade pierced her skull, and she fell like a puppet without strings.

I tried my best to contain my breath as my her guts and eyeballs were ripped out one after another.

My brother and I were caught moments later, by one of the mercenaries that saw though my mother camouflage magic.

Our bodies are special. The people from Evighet have more powerful muscles than average humans, we also cast magic faster and stronger. This is due to one of our organs, situated between the heart and the ribs. It is said that it is due to the Silver King, but no one knows.

This organ, is the reason of our constant battles with mercenaries. They contracted by nobles, and constantly try to take every piece of our bodies to empower themselves.

After being discovered, my brother and I became a slave. They probably saw more worth letting us live until we became adults, and our bodies matured.

Before being forced to leave my homeland, I saw out of the corner of my eye as my family and friends were gutted like lambs. For them, we were nothing more than animals.

We traveled from place to place, while doing forced labor from morning till evening. We had to work until our hands bled, if we didn't comply, we were beaten until we couldn't stand up anymore.

At the age of 12, our magic powers were strip away as our mana cores were taken away.

My brother and I were separated as I was sold to a noble called Belgus, who, contrary to my expectations, had no interest in my organs. Instead, he was interested in my story, not in a good way.

He wanted to know everything about me. All the things that happened to my family and friends made him curious. His curiosity scared me.

In the end, I ended up working as a soldier for him in the frontline. Years past, but I never forgot anything. Every night, I would have nightmares about my family and the time we spent together. The scars on my skin were a perpetual memory of that moment, which I could never put to rest in a corner of my mind.

My life quickly became centered around fighting. This turned my social skills close to nonexistent. I was always alone.

No friends or lovers. I couldn't bond with anyone.

The memories of my family and friends keep hunting me. It reached a point where I couldn't sleep at night anymore.

At 24, I reached my limit, I was determined to end it all, but that day Belgus decided to change my profession. Instead, I was tasked with the role of becoming a maid of one of her children, a girl.

She didn't show any emotions, neither sadness nor happiness. But with time I learn how to read her.

It's been ten years since I meet her. She is now going to turn 10 while I'm close to my 35.

At first, she was reserved and indifferent toward me. But after the accident with her teacher in the royal castle, she began acting differently.

I somehow could tell that I broke a barrier within her.

Her coldness was still there, but she no longer hesitated when talking to me. I could see from time to time small smiles appear on her face.

She might not know it, but she changed.

But she isn't the only one, I changed to.

It's not like I fully recovered, I can't forget what happened to my family, and sometimes I have nightmares. But I can live with that.

Because now I have an objective.

I want to protect this child.

However, there is a problem. She doesn't need me.

This girl is a genius. She was already capable of casting spells and using magic at barely three years old. Her magic power has grown exponentially over the past years, so much that she can even cast spells only done by archmages.

I have been training with her and I couldn't even traverse her defense.

That's why I didn't oppose to her participation on the battle against the siege of demons. Exactly because I know how powerful she is.

The nobles of this kingdom haven't been notified yet, except for Belgus and the royal family, no one knows about her talent. But this is only temporary.

The royal family is trying to keep her like an ace up the sleeve against the nobles. It was a matter of time until she was used.

She can't live in this world without fighting, and I don't plan on babysitting her. I know for experience that those without power are the ones that suffer the most.

If I can't protect her, I'll make her as strong as I can, both physically and mentally.

At this moment we are on the heart of the battlefield. I'm fighting with the soldiers, following the order of the commander, while Aglaya is going berserk.

It seems that the commander recognized me from the frontline, even though 10 years have passed, he gave me and armor and assigned me to a squad.

"Helppp!"

I can hear screams in the background of soldiers being ripped apart by demons. This atmosphere is nostalgic, not in a good way of course.

Unfortunately, I can't go save them, this is the battlefield.

... When did I become this emotionless? We are in the battlefield, fighting a horde that might be a threat to the entire kingdom, yet I'm not nervous at all.

Speaking of which, how did it manage to get to the capital? If it has reached this far, that means that the Takashi fort has fallen.

This is a very bad sign. The Takashi fort was a vital point of defense. If they manage to break through there, then the capital will be in serious danger.

But more importantly, how did they get this far without no one noticing? If the kingdom knew, they should have evacuated the capital...something is going on.

"Advance! Don't look behind!" The third in command yells, and we start advancing the line.

"Argh!" A small demon appears out of nowhere and tries to attack me. I quickly dodge his claw and slice him in half with my sword.

Another demon comes from the side, trying to hit me with its tail. I spin around and use my free hand to block the attack. I then slash it across the chest, severing the spine and killing it instantly.

Out of the corner of my eye, I can see how soldiers are being torn to pieces by demons, but I don't have time to care. I need to focus on the enemy in front of me.

A dragon-like monster comes into my sight, it seems to be a type of demon known as a dracolich. Its body is covered in black scales, and it has a pair of black wings in its back.

It's a huge creature, larger than an elephant, and its claws are sharp enough to cut diamond.

It starts charging toward me at a speed almost imperceptible to the average human eye.

Using its momentum, I make him fall by cutting one of his wings.

The dracolich screeches in pain, its body is twitching in agony.

Not even a second passes, before I stab the tip of my sword inside its neck.

From the impact, the head is thrown backwards, and it falls on top of the soldiers behind me, blocking their path.

Sorry, but I need to keep moving forward.

Ahead of me, I see another demon coming my way, the one that fell earlier raises its claw to strike me.

I quickly rush towards it, using the same technique I used against the dracolich from before, but this time I aim for its spinal cord.

The blade slashes its body clean off, sending its half flying.

At the same time, more dracolich come from the sides, making me retreat and regroup with the rest of the squad.

There is no way we can hold this line much longer, they just don't stop coming.

"Flee! Flee! Move to the rear!" I hear someone yelling.

"What in the hell is that!?" Another soldier shouts.

Everyone is looking at the right with pale faces, as if Satan itself was present.

I turn around and see a gigantic thing coming at us.

It looks like a titan, but his skin is red and cracked, revealing a dark substance beneath. His limbs are long and thick, but not as big as a normal human. It still quite far, but that's only temporary. He is getting closer.

"Fuck!" I yell to myself and start running towards it.

Why is a dark titan here, how did no one notice!?

The dark titan turns to face me and I can feel the shockwave coming from his steps. The ground shakes.

He stops and looks at me with his golden eyes.

"Kill her." He says with a voice that sounds like metal scraping together.

I've seen such a terrifying thing before during my years in the frontline. When that thing arrives, the battlefield becomes hell on earth.

I need to escape, but if this thing passes, it's over for the capital and all the people there.

Demons rush toward me in all direction

as I run towards it, luckily I'm protected by some experienced soldier that followed me. They too probably know what this thing is, and know what will happen if it reaches the capital.

"Aglaya!" I shout with all the strength I have left. "Focus on that thing!"

Aglaya right now Is going berserk on the front, this is her first battle, and it seems that the adrenaline took over her completely. I can only pray that she somehow hears me.

I push my body to the limit and I start to charge towards it.

The titan turns around to face me.

I leap over its hand that try to trap me, and I swing my sword at its tendon.

Its foot hits the edge of my blade, and it pushes me down effortless.

I land on the ground and roll to avoid getting crushed under his massive feet.

The others soldiers follow me, and we form a circle around him, they cast spells at the same time they try to attack its tendon.

The dark titans move its arms slowly, its casting inferno. A spell that will turn the whole battlefield to hell.

"Aglaya stop that thing!" I shout again, stretching my lungs to the limit.

Then before I notice, the imposing giant creature, explodes into a thousand pieces.

I look up, and see Aglaya engulfed in her dark flames, she has blood and intestines all over her. Contrary to the usual, she isn't expressionless, instead she looks like she's in pain.

The little girl is hyperventilating. With her eyes half closed, and her furrowed eyebrows. She might collapse any minute.

She looks at me, and then turns around towards others fronts.

This wasn't the only dark titan present on the battlefield.
