After reaching the spiritual forest, both Lord Xie Yang and Leader Xie Ye stepped off their horses.
"Brother, I will bother you to look after the horses."
"Gladly."
Lord Xie Yang handed over the task of looking after the horses to Leader Xie Ye, who was quite capable of doing things like managing horses, and he even requested the latter to not interfere in his fight unless he asks for it or if he was in a deadly situation.
The spiritual forest was very vast, stretching for a few hundred miles and extending for several hundred miles long. It had two parts, the outskirts which the weak spiritual monsters inhabited and the inner forest where strong beasts reigned supreme. Spiritual beasts above level 10 lived in the inner forest. Nourishing themselves by soaking in spiritual energy, many magic herbs and fruits of magical prowess grew in both parts of the forest.
The outskirts of the spiritual forest, Lord Xie Yang read, only had weak spiritual beasts whose levels ranged from one to ten, which was why it was a good place for a first realm cultivator like him to hunt spiritual beasts and search for natural treasures that grows in the wild.
"Found one." A dozen or so meters away from him was a towering tree whose canopies blanketed the rays of the sun and whose body cast a great shadow on the shadow. Red cherries hung on its thick, vibrant branches. It had overgrown bushes surrounding it.
When Lord Xie Yang saw it, more specifically, the red cherries, his eyes lit up in both surprise and bewilderment.
He was surprised and happy to come across numerous red spiritual cherries as he knew that they were one of the ingredients he needed to make the breakthrough pills. This pill nourishes the elixir field and increases one's spiritual energy capacity. A cultivator could consume three of them, and then he would no longer benefit from eating them. Still, three were too great as a cultivator could step over the stage they are stuck at for weeks, months, or a lifetime depending on their talent by popping a single one in their mouth. And this was also why this pill that increased the cultivation of cultivators in the first ten levels of the elixir field nourishing realm was highly sought after and highly prized ten thousand years ago.
Lord Xie Yang believed that it still was equally valuable.
He was confused because no one picked up such a rare ingredient even though it was in the outskirts of the forest.
After thinking for a while, he determined that the people of today didn't know the exact value of these spiritual cherries.
To confirm his guess, he turned to Leader Xie Ye, and while looking at him and pointing at the cherries on the trees, he asked, "Brother, do you know what those are?"
Leader Xie Ye nodded his head and didn't waste a moment before telling everything he knew about them to his family's frail and jade-like young master, "Young master, red berries that grow in this forest such as them are somewhat of a delicacy among us spiritual cultivators. However, as only those with a robust immune and digestive system can eat them without getting sick and suffering from diarrhea, boh ordinary villages and spiritual cultivators from the cities ruled by feudal lords such as my master don't consider them rare. Most cultivators don't waste their time picking them up as beasts usually guard such things and attack whoever tries to take them. That's why spiritual cultivators and herbs gathered from the village left it untouched, even though red berries from here are worth dozen copper taels."
The Glorious Sun Empire, which the City hidden under the clouds was a part of, had three common currencies, namely, gold taels, silver taels, and copper taels. 100 copper coin was equal to 1 silver coin, and one hundred silver tael was equivalent to a single gold bar.
For a family of three to survive in a malnourished state, a hundred copper coins were enough. But for a family of the same size to live in a house and feed themselves properly, 300 to 3000 copper coins or 3 to 30 silver taels were good enough.
Thus, it was not at all profitable for herb gatherers to try their luck and risk their lives at picking up these berries, hoping that there wouldn't be a beast guarding them.
"Heh." Lord Xie Yang chuckled after hearing Leader Xie Ye's words.
He found it too funny to discover that a rare ingredient worth many spiritual crystals ten thousand years ago was now merely a delicacy worth a dozen or so copper coins. The world had changed too much over the past ten thousand years, and he was now sure that the historians didn't correctly preserve the ancient alchemy knowledge, thus, leading to today's situation.
Since no one was willing to pick them up, and some even disdained to do that, he decided to do the world a favor and take them all for himself.
Lord Xie Yang stepped away from Leader Xie Ye and moved towards the grand tree. One of his hands was resting on the hilt of his sword as he calmly and seemingly with no wariness made his way towards the tree.
"Swoosh!"
The moment he reached five meters away from it, a black shadow leaped out of the thick bushes surrounding the tree and came darting towards him.
"Swish!"
Just as it looked like it would sink its fangs into him, Lord Xie Yang, almost reflexively and without a moment of hesitation, grabbed the hilt of his sword and pulled it out from the scabbed tied to his side, and swung it in an upward slash.
The cold, gleaming, and sharp body of the sword met head-on with the sturdy and scaly body of the beast that sneaked attacked him.
"Clang!"
The two collided in mid-air, producing a clanking sound and resulting in the flashing of metallic sparks before his sword flung the beast backwards, causing it to crash on the tree with a dull thud.
