Chapter 19: RUnning From Terrors!
“I THOUGHT YOU SAID THERE WAS ONLY ONE OF THEM!" Jack yelled angrily as monstrous screeches echoed out behind him.
“THAT'S HOW THEY NORMALLY BEHAVE! Adult Slicers are too territorial to gather together! I don’t know what’s setting them off!” Leon replied, ducking as a black square attempted to decapitate him. The red-head responded with a blast of energy, squarely into the pseudo arachnoid's midsection, causing the creature to explode in a white mist.
“Slicers are fast and deadly, but highly fragile! Any low level offensive skill should work as long as it connects!”
Another creature attempted to take Leon’s life, but in a surprising twist the kid pivoted on his heel and punched the black square, sending it careening back with a loud “SCREE!” before it was pummeled to death by a metal pipe Leon had ripped from the wall.
"Where's Captain Domino?" Jill asked, but Jack replied by shoving the girl's head into his chest.
“Jillian, close your eyes!” Jack barked, ignoring the the girls inquiries as he turned a corridor leading into a hallway of hell. Fresh blood dripped inside the passageway, painting the walls red as bodies lay scattered around in various states of having been consumed. To make matters worse, there were several more Slicers moving rapidly in their direction from the other end of the hall causing Jack's heart leap into his mouth at the sight.
Ah. Great we're actually screwed. Jack audibly chuckled before recovering to see another passageway.
“Over here!” Jack called out, continuing forward down a different path. He couldn’t see what was around the corner but at least one pathway had to have no slicers already infesting it.
Of course Jack's hopes were dashed as there were two slicers dashing in his direction.
“GET OUT OF MY WAY!” Jack roared, clutching Jill tight and rushing the creatures. With his free arm he sent two blasts of Wind blade that cut down the two abominations, leaving him with enough Mana for one ability left in his arsenal. He had been reluctant to part with the mana, but a quick glance at Leon fighting for his life with a piece of metal rebar, Jack decided to make do.
Fortunately, now that the two slicers were dead the entire hallway was clear, a straight shot to the next deck.
"Hey! Hey! You have a movement skill right?!" Leon cried out, trying to get Jack's attention as he beat a Slicer into a green pasty mess.
"Yea! One Dash! But that's the last of my mana!" Jack replied, as he scooped up a piece of debris and threw it at a Slicer that was climbing the ceiling above Leon, hitting it squarely and causing it to fall. Leon gripped his weapon in both hands and batted the monster away, sending it colliding into several other Slicers and momentarily pushing the tide back.
"Then get ready to sprint!" Leon yelled before flinging the green-stained metal pipe with both hands. The improvised projectile soared, embedding itself into one of the Slicers that flailed, causing it to trip and bring down several nearby Slicers as well.
Jack let out a low chuckle as the monsters tumbled over one another, buying the trio some time.
Refocusing, he gritted his teeth and looked down at the shivering girl with her eyes shut tightly.
"Just hold on to me ok? It's going to get a little rough." Jack whispered, kissing his sister on the head and hugging her close as he prepared to activate Dash.
Jack willed the ability to activate. In the next moment he could feel energy coursing down from his chest to his legs, giving him a burst of speed that sent him gliding down the hallway. Leon followed suit, trailing behind him as a green blur. Soon the two had put distance between themselves and the monsters baying for their blood.
"Leon door!" Jack called out, indicating the sealed bulkhead ahead of the trio.
"Can't! All out!" Leon replied, causing Jack's stomach to drop at the news.
The duo stopped in front of the door, turning to face the incoming horde of monsters that were barreling toward them.
"Time to make our stand." Leon adopted a stance, crouching down with his fists raised as his body glowed brighter by the second.
Jack placed his sister down. "Cover your ears Jillian. And don't open your eyes. Ok?"
"Mhhm!" Jill nodded, tucking herself in a fetal position and covering her ears.
Jack picked up a nearby piece of metal, preparing to square off.
"I just want you to know, I'm scared as hell." Jack half-laughed, eyeing the square monsters screeching in fury at the humans as they began catching up.
"Yea. Me too, you'll get used to it… If we live." Leon added on.

Jack took a deep breath, tensing up. The monsters were almost upon them now.
Fifty meters…
Forty…
Thirty…
Jack raised the improvised weapon, wishing he'd never met the stupid Angel and embarked on this stupid voyage. Now he and his sister were going to die and it was all because of some dumb Angel that couldn't fly straight.
[Well that's just mean, that really hurt my feelings.]
Before Jack could muster a response the lights suddenly flickered on, reflexively making him shut his eyes as he felt himself being knocked to the ground by something heavy.
"Blood Skewer!" The familiar sound of Mi'shka's voice called out, followed by a loud burst of noise that seemed to punch through metal.
Opening his eyes he could see the horde of monsters skewered by a giant ball of blood with spikes that held them in place. The monsters twitched like dead bugs before evaporating into a puff of smoke, erasing their presence. But their reprieve didn't last long as dozens of Slicers took their place.
"Come on! Let's move!" Mi'shka yelled, helping Jack to his feet just as the sound of gunfire and loud booms began to erupt all around them.
Jack wasted no time and scooped up his sister, running past the group of soldiers shooting at the never ending horde behind them.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! Jack screamed internally. Furious that Sahaqiel had been silent for so long.
[Not right now, we'll talk later.]
Jack gritted his teeth, unhappy with the response, but he tabled it, focusing on the white-haired man's back as he chased behind him.
Suddenly Jack began to get an itching sensation again. Like a thousand eyes gazing upon him all at once, but this time it was close. Real close.
An ear-piercing roar from behind made everyone stiffen up, drawing their attention to a massive hulking creature sporting dozens of black bulbous eyes that walked unphased through the gunfire.
Mi'shka immediately pivoted, pushing Leon and Jack behind him as the soldiers fled from the creature's massive tongue that flickered back and forth, causing dents to appear in the hallway.
"Captain!" One of the soldiers screamed before she was bisected by the monster's razor sharp tongue, spilling blood everywhere, but she didn't die. At least not immediately.
Jack cringed at the sight, the woman was crawling toward them, her entrails trailing behind as she dragged herself towards safety. She reached a hand out, choking a cry for help but met her end as the monstrosity stomped forward while smacking Slicers out of its way.
Mi'shka took a deep breath, the man appearing paler than usual as he eyed the creature and clapped his hands, dyeing them red. As the blood dripped off his palms Mi'shka split them apart, the crimson liquid coalescing into twin red blades in either hand.
"I'll deal with this, get to the bridge and tell Captain Skirita there's a Nest onboard and to evacuate the ship!" Mi'shka ordered as he rushed the monster, sliding underneath its tongue and slashing at the titanic creature.
Peeling his eyes from the spectacle of blades clashing against hardened flesh, Jack sprinted down the hall, attempting to put as much distance as possible between him and the hulking Monstrosity. Suddenly Jack felt a tingling sensation as he passed through an intersection with something green and big blurring in his peripheral.
In the split second before a massive maw latched onto him, Jack turned, tossing his sister into the arms of the red-headed teen who tried to intercept the monster to save him.
Pain exploded in Jack's chest as razor sharp teeth pierced his skin, causing him to yelp in agony as the taste of copper coated his mouth.
"Jack!" Jill cried as she landed in Leon's arms. She reached out to her brother but it was already too late, the monster had him and was moving.
"Take care of her! Take care of her!" Jack screamed frantically before the dog-like monster dragged him down into a hole.
