Chapter 20: The [ANGEL] Returns and The System UPdates

Jack was in agony. The taste of copper flooded his mouth as he desperately smashed his fist into the muscular mutt that held him in a vice.

[Ghenna! Ghenna!]

Heeding Sahaqiel's words Jack activated the ability, causing his arm to erupt into a brilliant radiance as he stabbed his glowing fingers into one of the monster's bulbous eyes. Jack shivered, the texture of the beast's eyeball moist, and uncomfortable as he dug his hand up to his wrist in the green muscular mutt’s eye socket.

But he could feel it now, the creature's jaw loosening as his MP bar began to rise. But the reprieve was short lived, the beast chomped down harder on Jack's chest causing the boy to scream out as he felt his ribs cracking under the pressure. Luckily the monster started to slow, struggling to move as it quickly became lethargic under Ghenna's Gasp.

"Let me go, you bastard!" Jack yelled, smashing the monster in the face with his free hand, before activating a wind blade aimed at the creature's hind legs.

Suddenly the beast slid to a stop, collapsing under its own weight as its legs gave out. Upon making contact with the ground, Jack let out a yelp in pain as the force of the fall traveled into the monster's mouth and into the boy’s chest, burying the creature's teeth further into his torso where an audible snapped occurred.

“Damn it!!” Jack screamed. Something was definitely broken, his entire left side felt on fire as pain shot through his body, forcing him to seize up unwillingly.

Bloodied, the teen recovered and mustered all his strength to unlatch himself from the creature's over size maw. Slowly lifting the razor sharp teeth out of his chest, Jack let out a cry as he pried himself free. Breaking out, he rolled, falling to the floor with a wet thud and gasping for air as he watched his HP pool dwindle while smoke billowed from his chest.

"DAMN IT!"

[PAIN TOLERANCE LvL 1 Acquired!]

Well… that would have certainly been useful a moment ago. Jack inwardly whined, steadying himself as his breathing slowly returned to normal and the pain began to lessen with each second passing by making him emit less and less smoke.

He crawled around for a bit on the meaty floor, attempting to get his bearings together in the unfamiliar space. Everything was red, fleshy, and dim, like he was in a tunnel made of meat and sinew.

"Aw what the hell is this?" Jack murmured out loud as he glanced at his hands that came back slick with mucus. Suddenly the beast behind him let out a low whine, forcing Jack to jump back in surprise.

The damn thing wasn't dead!

The four-legged monstrosity tried to rise again but Jack flailed toward the beast, slipping several times before managing to latch onto the creature and activating Gehenna, putting the beast down for good.

"Die! Die! Die!"

Taking no chances he kept activating the ability until the hound became nothing more than a shriveled husk of muscle and meat.

As Jack fell to the ground, exhausted and stressed, several notifications began to display in front of the teen’s face, distracting him from his handiwork as he lay on the ground recovering from the ordeal.

Pandora’s box? Three essences? Vocation? Jack tried to wrap his head around the flood of information that was being thrown at him and what it meant.

[Jack, we don’t have time! I'm sensing more creatures nearby, we need to move!]

"Where the hell have you been?!" Jack yelled, wincing in the process as he peeled his attention away from his system and to the Angel in his head. "I've nearly died like twenty times today!"

"Later, I promise to explain it to you but now isn't the right time." Sahaqiel said as she materialized in front of Jack and cupped his face. "It's important, but you have other things to worry about."

He was reluctant to agree but the Angel was right. He needed to move and fast. He could already hear the howls and skittering of monsters nearby and he was worried sick about Jill.

Jack cautiously made his way down the tunnel, every step, making a wet squishing sound as he walked, causing chills to run down his spine.

"Ugh. This is. So gross. Please tell me I'm not in some creature’s digestive tract." Jack complained, finally noticing the sweet smell of decay around him.

[No, I've seen something like this before. It's an infestation from a Nest.]

"A Nest?" Jack asked as he stepped over what appeared to be the half-dissolved remains of a woman wearing a technician uniform.

Fuck me, well we know what happened to the engineering team. Jack thought to himself, pushing out the texture of the corpse out of his mind and how it reminded him of mincemeat.

[Nests direct and control Demonspawn, slaving them to their will. When they lay down roots they begin corrupting the land, infesting it with their dark energies and turning anything that dies into more Demonspawn or food.]

“Well isn’t that lovely.” Jack sarcastically replied, checking the nearby corner for any monsters. He learned his lesson from the Hound’s surprise attack and wouldn’t be so hasty to rush off again.

Sneaking his way through, Jack stumbled across several bubbling remains of human bodies, clothes, and the occasional half melted firearm.

“How did this happen so quickly?” Jack eyed the walls of pulsating meat around him. “It’s only been like thirty or so minutes since the attack started?”

[Nests infest quickly, and non-mana users are highly susceptible to its corruption. Anything that can’t resist its pull gets turned into… well look around you.]

Well damn, I guess the Corpos weren’t lying about all the safety precautions after all. Jack thought to himself, recounting how the Corporate Alliance always taxed and haggled anyone attempting to leave the city.

“Wait, but I don’t feel anything?”

[That’s because of your anti-corruption trait. Unlike anyone else you’re nigh immune to the effects, at least against this one. Perhaps it's a juvenile Nest.]

“Will it spread? Infect the rest of the ship?” Jack worried about the implications.

[If we don’t stop it, yes. The nest will continue calling demonspawn and spreading its infestation until everything onboard is consumed.]

Jack hoped his sister was safe. “If we deal with the nest, the monsters should go away right?”

[It’ll stop the infestation from growing, but without a Nest coordinating their movements the Demonspawn should be significantly easier to deal with.]

Suddenly the walls around Jack shook as a massive boom echoed out, rocking the ship and causing him to stumble. No doubt one of the landship’s massive cannons firing for once. The ship had begun shaking now, as several loud sounds of guns being fired and cannons shooting jiggled the mounds of flesh surrounding the hallway.

[Jack! Behind you!]

Distracted, Jack almost paid the price for letting his guard down. But thanks to Sahaqiel's warning Jack spun, narrowly dodging another hound that came at him with it's oversized jaw open.

The beast soared passed his head as he ducked, allowing the creature to miss where it slid across the mushy meat floor and snarled at the teen. It moved to pounce but Jack was quicker. He sent a wind blade at the muscular beast that connected with the monster just as it leaped at him, causing the creature to let out a whine as one of its legs was severed mid-air. Jack side-stepped, allowing the monster to collide head-first into a nearby wall. Before the creature could recover, Jack sent another wind blade, and despite the beast trying to dodge, it connected squarely. Without one of it's legs the creature struggled to find it's balance, allowing Jack to make short work of the monster by targeting the thing's feet.

"Well these aren't so tough after all. As long as they don't ambush you." Jack muttered to himself as he studied the oversized jaw hound. The legs were definitely a weak point. The creature was still alive, but merely missing all of it's legs. It was funny in a morbid way that the thing was using it's jaw to move itself towards Jack. But Jack didn't let himself be distracted for too long. He reached down, activating Gehenna to drain the monster and replenish his Mana.

[We should move soon.]

"We will, just want to make sure I'm topped off. Why are you so nervous?"

Sahaqiel seemed to go silent, causing Jack to roll his eyes and focus on the task at hand.

He had to say the thing was convenient, too bad it took forever to drain living things. If he could just absorb stuff non-stop quickly and rack up skills then he'd have been ecstatic, but the way it was right now put him in too much danger.

After draining the creature, Jack was met with the same notifications as before, however he didn't receive any additional ARCANA or a skill for that matter. Perhaps it was only limited to one per person or creature?

Whatever the case, Jack had a better understanding of the hounds and how to deal with the monsters. Still though, he was alone.

“Just one teenage boy and his imaginary friend, against a Nest of untold nightmares.” Jack scoffed, clutching his ribs. Despite the pain tolerance helping to ease the pain, and his chest no no longer having holes in them, every movement had hurt like hell. Suddenly an idea occurred to him as he eyed part of the fleshy tunnel that pulsed in reaction to his footsteps.

“Since you know so much about this infestation, these meat walls are a part of the nest right?” Jack asked, eyeing the meaty walls around him.

[Yes. It’s directly connected. Every bit of the corruption acts as a part of the Nest’s main node. Why do you ask?]

Suddenly the area around Jack sparked to life in golden radiance, reflecting the glow off of the boy’s arm. Jack brandished a devious smile as he knelt down and reached for the fleshy terrain.

If no one is around to stop me, then I can probably drain this thing in peace, ending the threat once and for all.

[OR! You alert the whole horde drawing every single one of them here to come and mutilate us horribly.]

Jack paused.

"I forgot you can read my mind. Either way, it draws them away from everyone else right? Plus, you said it yourself. If we don't stop the nest, it will continue to spread."

[That's not what I mean't, I think it's a bad idea.]

"Well what other options do we have?" Jack said as he felt the familiar rush of mana entering his body.
