Chapter 34: Plans to Defend
"The Base Core room, fire control, and the Atmospheric water generators. These are our three main hard points." Sergeant Ashfield explained as the group of six heavily armored soldiers stood around a large canvas laid out on the floor that Corporal Yun was doodling on. "If any of these fall we'll be up fogland's creek without a paddle."
"What's so important about the Atmospheric water generators? The Core room and fire control I understand, but water collectors?" Jack asked, uncertain why the Sergeant wanted them to protect such a non-vital facility.
"That's because the water collectors act as coolant for the Base core generator as well as a thermal regulator. Without it, the fail-safes would kick in, shutting down the Mana battery and turning off our fire control which in turn, turns off our turrets. It's doubtful they'll target the water collectors as Demonspawn tend to go after the largest source of nearby Mana." Sergeant Ashfield pointed at a circular structure on the map adjacent to the hub. "Just make sure to direct your abilities away from this facility."
"Got it, thanks."
"Alright, Miota, Ty, you're on central tower overwatch. You two will take up fighting positions on the roof alongside the Mechframe. You two will provide aerial and ground overwatch for Vichecht and Leslie-. " The Sergeant tapped at the facility on the map before sliding her finger across to two letters marked on either side of the base behind the minefields. "Who will be in pillboxes with M-gun emplacements picking off any that make it past the turrets and mines."
"Great, I get the shit detail." Jena snickered.
"They're all shit details, Leslie, get over it." The medical officer interjected. "Do we have a plan B once the mines die and the perimeter turrets run out of ammo?"
The Sergeant smiled and taped the letters C and D on the map. "We do indeed. Miota mind telling everyone what you found?"
The black-haired woman snuck a glance at Jack before clearing her throat and sharing her discovery.
"I was looking through the inventory logs and found a shipping log dated this week for deployable HAVO-MK-Nine Sentry Turrets and after doing some digging." Elena brandished a smirk, "I found them."
She pointed at several spots on the map.
"Six in total. Two for either side. Jack and I deployed their housing units according to the sarge's battleplan. They’re pre-armed and ready to go. If you need to fall back, hit the buttons on these remotes to unleash hellfire." Elena handed Jena and Yun silver controllers. "But only once you need to fall back. They lob explosive payloads that will set just about anything on fire so once you hit these buttons, you need to haul ass."
Jessica snapped her fingers to get everyone's attention as she pointed at the map. "And once you fall back, you'll dig in at the secondary positions Charlie and Delta respectively."
Jack raised his hand to interrupt their conversation. "Where exactly do I fall into all this?"
"You, are the most important piece." Jessica made a smile that sent a slight shiver down his spine. "Lieutenant Belfusa told me you have a movement skill and range abilities, is that right?"
Jack opened his system and read off the relevant skills. "Dash and Wind blade. If anyone gets injured I can also heal."
At Jack's mention of healing, there seemed to be a collective sigh of relief. Something else to not share in the future.
"Healing?! Really? Then you're perfect! As our only Awakened, your main role here is to move between positions and help thin out monsters in areas that need you the most. Since you can release mana you can disrupt monsters or throw them off if an area needs help."
"How will I know which areas need me the most? This base is pretty big. Plus my wind blades aren’t exactly well.. Big. I think I’d run out of mana after the first few hounds."
"Don't worry, we’ve got that all figured out. I'll be piloting an aerial recon drone from the roof. Any area that requires support I'll signal you using this headpiece so don't lose it. We only have the one." Sergeant Ashfield said, handing Jack a headset. "There's also a gift outside that should help you thin the herds."
Jack's curiosity piqued at the mention of “gift” but he had more important questions as he looked at the map layout and lack of defenses on either side of the base that wasn’t a gate.
"What exactly prevents the Demonspawn from just going around our defenses? I mean, besides the turrets?"
"Good question. Mana pheromones. Aerosol Mana in a can. Usually, our security detail would spray areas to lead monsters away from our base, but with how many there are skulking about, I’ve only sprayed a trail leading towards our kill zones.”
Jack wanted to ask what had happened to the security detail, but considering the armor they were all wearing had different names attached to their chest plates, he fancied a morbid guess.
“Anyway,” The Sergeant continued, drawing a circle on the map “If all sites are compromised we’ll fall back to the facility entrance where we’ve put the last of the Havo sentrys. We’ll make our stand there before falling back inside. If we fall back we’ll move until we’re in the core room and if that fails….”
“What about the Trucker in the garage?” Ty asked.
“What about it?”
“Any plan for an exfil if everything fails?” The medic asked, drawing glances from everyone gathered.

Jessica shook her head.
“It’s a glorified hauling vehicle, unarmored, it won’t get us very far. If we still had the armored cars I’d say we’d retreat to the garage and attempt to drive our way out before activating the self-destruct, but that ship has long since sailed.” The sergeant grumbled. "If we had the ti-"
Suddenly a loud bang from above cut Jessica off, causing everyone to tense up as the woman raced toward an Intellipad laying on a broken chair.
"That's the signal from Lovelace. Demonspawn are approaching! Few hundred meters out!" Jessica yelled, grabbing the Intellipad with her usable arm and bolting off. The rest of the women scattered, each rushing off toward the exit. "Jack you're with me!"
As Elena passed by Jack she whispered an apology before taking off, causing him to snap forward and grab her arm.
"Maybe after this and when I'm older?"
Elena gave a soft smile and wink. "Sure kid."
[Aren't you brave huhuhu]
"Hey lovebirds! Get to your positions! Let's go!" Jessica screamed out, jolting the two away from each other.
Jack exited the facility behind the Sergeant who stood waiting patiently next to a crate near a ladder.
“Is this my gift?” Jack said as he eyed what looked to be something long and big covered by a brown blanket.
“Yes it is, take a peek why doncha?”
He obliged, removing the covering to reveal a backpack with a belt of ammunition connected to a large multi-barrel rotary machine gun. Jack brandished a smile like a kid in a candy shop.
“Holy crap.”
[Oooooh]
“Portable saturated fire support. Just aim and dose the area where you’re needed, but just be careful of overheating the motors and hitting friendlies. Usually, these things are too heavy for anyone to use mobility, but as a Awakened System user with elevated strength and speed, you should be able to get around nicely.”
“I love it!” Jack exclaimed, putting the container of ammo on his back and hoisting the shiny minigun into the air.
"Squeezing the trigger lightly spins the barrel, squeezing it hard releases the lead." The Sergeant pointed out. “Just keep the barrel pointed down and not near any of our faces.”
Jack had seen one of these things before in a video game that Jill played, but actually seeing it up close raised the cool factor in his mind. With his new toy in hand, Jack followed the Sergeant up the ladder who was using the ladder guard as a prop to propel herself upwards in a weird worm dance.
Jack stiffed a laugh as he knew she was climbing that way because of her missing arm.
Upon the duo reaching the top of the base, The hulking Mechframe turned its head and greeted them. “Good evening Sergeant Ashfield, Recruit Knight.”
“Hello big guy,” Jack replied back, eyeing the large twin machine guns the machine held in either hand. Technically they were SMGs but for Jack, the number of bullets they held and size were more akin to massive machine guns.
“Sergeant, V and Leslie are hunkered up,” Ty said, approaching the duo. "Position Alpha and Bravo are green.”
The sergeant huffed before appearing to force a smile.”Good, get back to your position. Recruit, you ready for this? Heck of a first day on the job huh?!”
Despite her laugh and demeanor, Jack knew she was nervous, he was feeling it too. They were coming. Soon they would be surrounded on all sides by monstrosities that wanted to rip them apart.
“Yea, just nothing but bad luck all this week.” Jack laughed wishing he’d get a break.
“I SEE THEM!” Elena screamed out as the cylinder turrets surrounding the base suddenly popped up from their housing and opened fire at the swarm emerging from the woods.
