Chapter 35: Battle for Gamma Station-019H
Three days passed since Elena had first seen the horde and after the first wave of monsters slammed against the base and in those three days... Nothing happened. Forcing the survivors to live on edge as they eyed the rest of the demon swarm back off. For reasons unknown, the Demonspawn were giving the base a wide berth, standing just shy of the base's defenses and skulking around the outpost after losing close to a hundred of their brethren.
Jack and the women slept in shifts. With two alternating in after every other hour, relieving those on watch.
"Jack."
"Mmmh?" Jack murmured as Yun flashed a light in his eyes.
"Wakey Wakey. It's your turn boot."
Jack groaned as he shimmed from underneath the sleeping bag. "Already? I swear it's only been ten minutes."
"Welcome to the Imperial army. Eventually you'll get so good at not sleeping you'll learn to sleep with your eyes open. Like Sergeant Ashfield." Yun laughed, helping Jack to his feet as she pointed to the woman staring blankly at an Intellipad screen.
"I'm not asleep Corporal. I can hear you fine." Jessica grunted as her eyes shifted to focus on the man approaching her.
"What's it looking like?" Jack asked, turning his head slightly to see Yun digging herself snuggly into the sleeping bag he'd just left.
"Still the same. RSAT-Drone reports nothing strange except for the Demonspawn actively avoiding us."
"Wonder what's causing them to behave this way. No way this is normal, right?"
The Sergeant sighed.
"Yeah. If we- wait. EVERYONE UP NOW!" Sergeant Ashfield suddenly yelled mid-sentence. Jack rushed over to her screen where the drone was locating and marking hundreds- no thousands of Demonspawn moving through the woods at a breakneck pace.
Jack wasted no time and collected his minigun as Yun and Jena raced past him to the ladder.
“Can never have anything nice.” Yun complained before sliding down the ladder.
"This is where the fun begins Jack." Ty laughed as she picked up her helmet and attached a bayonet to her rifle.
"Positions! Positions!" Jessica yelled, hitting a button on her tablet that sent lights beaming into the midnight sky that melted away the darkness. “Remember! Burst shots! Don’t melt the barrels!”
With a whirl of gunfire, the battle had begun. At first, it was only a few dozen hounds and black shapes rushing from the tree line, but then their numbers suddenly exploded as the sound of gunfire and mines being set off attracted the rest of the horde.
The air filled with lead and rhythmic bbrrrrrrt sounds as Outpost Gamma’s defenses shuddered to life.
From his viewpoint above the base, Jack felt anxiety creep up his spine as he watched hound after hound charge recklessly into the minefield that had been set up in front of either entrance. Despite the subsequent explosion of limbs and streams of lead pouring into them, the creatures were still rabidly approaching. He awed at the sight, feeling his morale plummet as the monsters trampled over their fallen comrades in their frenzied bid to acquire the source of fresh meat hiding behind a machine gun that kept thinning out their numbers.
“Jack! Five’o clock! Skyward!” Sergeant Ashfield yelled, drawing his attention to the swarm of bone-bats visible at a distance and closing fast. “Bursts fire! Don’t melt the motors! Remember not to melt the motors!”
He didn’t need to be told twice, Jack spun the minigun’s barrel and hoisted the heavy weapon toward the black blob of leather in the sky. After pressing down on the trigger, an explosion of lead let loose, momentarily jolting him back as he spat an impressive volume of fire into the air at the encroaching airborne assailants.
Lovelace joined him, standing above the teen and firing its massive weapons into the sky that helped chew the bats into a disgusting pink mist. But, it seemed their numbers were endless as dozens more replaced them as quickly as Jack and the Mech cut them down. Luckily as the creatures neared the base perimeter, the turrets registered their movements, slicing the monsters into chunks as they attempted to fly overhead.
However with the base defenses targeting systems hacked, they switched targets, allowing the swarm of monsters an opportunity to get closer and closer with more of them blowing themselves up on the mines. With the body count rising, and corpses piling up, it made shooting at the abominations nigh impossible from the ground-level pillboxes.
“Damn, the bodies are already starting to pile up! We need to clear the field!” Sergeant Ashfield called out.
“On it!” Miota responded, appearing next to Jack with a green cylindrical tube in her hands.
Is that a rocket launcher?!
“Vichecht! Prepare for danger close! Backblast clear! Backblast clear! Fire! Fire!” The Sergeant screamed before a deafening boom sounded out.
The weapon’s payload hit the mound of corpses blocking Bravo site’s line of sight, scattering the carcasses for the woman sitting in the pillbox to continue turning the horde into fertilizer.
Suddenly a bone spike hit the wall, nearly impaling Elena if not for Jack’s mana being consumed to knock the projective off course. Sahaqiel’s handy work no doubt, but a hail of similar spikes forced the defenders to dive for shelter. Several bats broke through their defenses and began strafing their position.
“We need to deal with the flyers first!” Jack screamed as he stood up and shredded several aerial monstrosities that neared the roof. One of them managed to avoid the collective gunfire pouring into the air and latched onto Jack from behind. But it suddenly went ridgid as a bullet found its way into the monster’s skull.
“You ok?!” Elena yelled out, before bayoneting a bat in its screeching jaw, stopping the monster in its attempt to claw its way through their barricade.
“I’m fine! Keep shooting!”
“Jack! We need you on the other side of the roof! Bravo site needs help!” Sergeant Ashfield’s voice barked in Jack's ear.
The boy tore himself away from Elena and sprinted across the roof. At the other end of the building he was met with the sight of multiple slicers attempting to make their way into the pillbox where Corporal Jena was failing to push back her assailants.
Jack positioned the minigun and let loose, annihilating the horde of slicers on top of the concrete pillbox and dying it green. Suddenly the door of the fortification violently opened as a familiar brunette burst out of the defensive position with several slicers hot on her heels.
Not wanting to hit the fleeing soldier, Jack gritted his teeth and activated dash. He lept off the roof of the base, hitting the ground with a roll before tumbling to his feet.
"Take cover!" He yelled at the woman.
Corporal Jena immediately dove to the ground as a magical blade of wind turned her pursuers into a puff of screeching smoke.
“Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit!" The woman rambled as Jack helped her to her feet. She was bleeding from a gash on her arm but a quick mend from Jack healed her wounds and stopped the bleeding. “Holy fuck! Thanks!”
“Bravo site is down! Leslie is falling back to Delta!” Sergeant Ashfield’s voice echoed in Jack’s ear and from the radio on Jena’s belt. “Fire the Havos and get to the next position! Jack! We need you at Alpha!”
The corporal pulled out and fumbled with a familiar silver controller before pressing the button and sprinting to the nearby pillbox. Suddenly several wooshes sounded out as something soared overhead.
With his increased senses, Jack could make out two canisters spiraling through the air as they landed just shy of the base entrance. A second later and the entire front end of the gate exploded into a canopy of fire.
Jack activated dash again and ran across the base as demonic screeches echoed out behind him.
Arriving at the location, Alpha site was faring no better than Bravo. The monsters were rabidly attacking the fortification with Jack spying what looked to be a rifle in one of the hound’s mouth being crushed. Suddenly screams sounded from within the pillbox, causing Jack to yell at the monsters to get their attention as he barreled toward the door.
Seeing the fresh piece of meat out in the open, the monsters immediately bolted toward Jack who answered with a battle cry and a hail of minigun fire. Quickly dispatching the line of monstrosities, Jack attempted to open the pillbox door. Only to find it locked from the inside.

Jack took a step back and kicked, using his augmented strength to send the door flying off its hinges and into several slicers that were flooding into the box-shaped fortification.
"Help me!" Yun screamed as she lay on the ground kicking at a black triangle attempting to sink its talons into her leg armor.
Jack ran and kicked the Slicer off, where it screeched before being turned into a green mush as he slammed his minigun down on the creature. Jack didn't have time to inspect his handy work however as several slicers began pushing at the dented door blocking the firing port.
"Go! Get to the next area! I'll hold them here!" Jack yelled to the blonde as he propped himself against the metal barricade and held back the tide of screeching.
"Thanks!" Corporal Yun yelled before scrambling off the floor and pressing her silver remote.
Jack watched the girl go but suddenly closed his eyes and winced as a Slicer's claw wrapped around the metal barricade and sliced his cheek. There was a scream before he opened his eyes, only to see Corporal Yun on the ground frantically crawling away.
Jack eyes went wide as he realized what happened. He blurred, stomping on the Slicer that was holding a severed leg in its mouth before rushing towards the little woman crying on the ground.
"You're gonna be ok!" Jack assured as he tossed his weapon and backpack away to pick up the injured soldier.
"My leg! My leg!" Yun cried in a panic as Jack flipped her over. She was crying as she reached down with shaky hands and attempted to stem the bleeding from her bloody stump but there was so much blood. Too much blood. Jack momentarily froze as he eyed the red gushing out. The creature had attacked with precision aim, ripping the leg off from the joint of the knee where the armor was weakest.
A fiery series of explosions broke out, breaking him from his stupor. Acting quickly Jack immediately plugged his hands into the gaping wound, activating mend.
Yun screamed, it was an ear-piercing howl that shook the teenager to his core. Yet despite this, Jack let his mana flow, staunching the flow of blood as he tried not to focus on how warm and soft her bloodied stump was.
"You're gonna be ok you're gonna be ok you’re gonna be ok." Jack whispered over and over again as Yun writhe in pain in his arms.
"I don't want! I don't want to die! Please!” Yun screamed as she hugged the boy close, smearing her bloody hands on his face as her skin turned pale.
“You’re ok youre ok youre ok your ok!”
Jack said over and over again, more to himself than to Yun as he tried his best to ignore the frantic woman as he eyed his pool of Mana ticking down and ran with her in his arms. So far he had already used nearly half of his mana and yet the battle had only just begun. Despite knowing this Jack activated soothe, immediately calming the distraught and terrified woman in his arms who quickly passed out.
"Alpha site is down! Miota take over for her!" Sergeant Ashfield's voice yelled in Jack's ear. "Jack bring her over here! The Corpsman will meet you!"
He obliged, rushing over to the base where he was greeted by Elena and Ty waiting for him at the foot of the facility.
"Oh sweetheart, what did they do to you." Ty whispered as Jack laid the petite woman down and Ty began tending to Yun’s bloody wound.
"I used my mend skill to stop the bleeding and soothe to calm her down. Then she passed out right after, is she gonna be ok?"
Ty glanced over to the worried teen and nodded her head quickly.
"You're a god-send Jack. If you didn't use your ability she'd have bled out in seconds. Come on baby girl let's get you inside." The medical officer said, elevating the woman by her legs and dragging her into the base. Jack went to help but Elena stopped him.
"Jack, with me. We need to collect that minigun," Elena said, as she pulled Jack by his shoulder. "She's trained for this. Right now the best you can do is do your part ok?"
Jack was hearing the woman but not processing her words. Yun’s scream of pain and the texture of her bloodied appendage was still visible in his mind as he looked at his shaking hand.
"Jack? Jack! Recruit! Get yourself together!"
That's right. They need me. Get yourself together!
He turned and nodded to the black-haired woman taking potshots at the encroaching demons with her rifle.
"I'm good, let's go!"
The two sprinted to the secondary pillbox where Elena entered and Jack went on ahead, picking up his discarded minigun and backpack out of the blood-stained sand.
"Jack!" Elena called out from the pillbox. "The Mguns jammed! Hold them off!"
"Ok!" Jack hoisted the heavy weapon as he took in his surroundings and monsters stumbling about.
Hell. To sum it up in one word. The tree line was gone with only flames standing where the trees once stood. The Havo turrets had set the area alight, with the victims of the hellfire flailing around frantically only serving to spread the chaos even further.
[Jack! Above!]
Jack woke from his stupor at Sahaqiel's warning as the skyline filled with a hail of familiar white bone spikes.
Without much in the way of things to protect him, Jack quickly pivoted and dove into the pillbox from it's gunnery port, getting snug with the black-haired woman as the spikes hit the roof with an audible tink sound. Jack smiled at the flustered Elena before looking up at the cause of his retreat.
The bats had backed off but they weren't gone. The creatures had flown to a distance, putting space between them and the base defenders shooting at them.
They were smart. Or at least possessed some intelligence to think strategy. Jack didn't pay it too much attention as a loud boom echoed out causing him to flinch at the sudden noise. In the next moment the gathering swarm was no more, replaced instead with a fiery mist that piñata'd into a mess of body parts.
Jack shifted his gaze through the firing screen of the pillbox to the source of the sound, where he immedaitly grinned ear to ear. Lovelace stood upon the roof, brandishing a massive smoking cannon that ejected a shell before the machine slapped another round into the metal tube.
"Alright! That's what I'm talking about!" Jack screamed in excitement. However his joy was short lived as a deafening roar rang out through the battlefield, causing an unexpected turn of events to play out that was beyond the human survivors expectations.
The monsters began fleeing. Turning tail and giving up their assault.
Suddenly Sergeant Ashfield’s voice buzzed in Jack’s ear.
"Jack! We need you up here! We've got a problem!"
