Jack was in a free fall for his life as he grappled with the oversized bird-faced monstrosity. After activating Gehenna and attempting to absorb the Nest’s mana, Jack ran into a little problem.

The Nest reacted quickly to his actions. The moment he touched the creature to drain its Mana, the fleshy mound immediately wrapped around his arm, pulling the boy in as the tunnel of meat retracted around him. It was moist, squishy, and highly uncomfortable but he could feel that he was being moved. So he kept activating Gehenna over and over again even as the walls of flesh rolled over him.

During that time he was given a notification.

[Grasp of Gehenna LvL up!]

(Unlocked Function. Mana reserve)

Jack's system updated, reflecting the added functionality of his arm.

His new Mana storage filled up quickly, causing his body to tingle and become aware of something in his forearm, like a sphere of sorts. Distracted by the sensation of meat rubbing across his skin Jack couldn't pay attention to it as the monster dragged him along.

With no options available to him, Jack kept Gehenna going until finally, he felt his surroundings grow sluggish in their movements.

Suddenly Jack found himself spit out of the meat trap and deposited in a musky cavern that was devoid of light. Covered in mucus Jack groaned in disgust, but a loud scream from Sahaqiel shook him from his stupor just in time to avoid a massive bloodied talon that came crashing down where he'd just been.

“Holy shit!” Jack exclaimed as he dove to the ground and scrambled to his feet, trying to process what he was looking at.

It was some kind of roided out bipedal monstrosity with a bird face and grayish feathered tentacles, wiggling along its body with a necklace made of what looked like two humans fused together around its neck.

“How do I fight that thing?!” Jack backed away wide-eyed as the monster growled and lowered itself to all fours. “Spit.”

It pounced, but a quick activation of Dash gave Jack the needed speed to evade the monster’s initial strike. Unfortunately, it stuck to him like white on rice, and sent a slash that tore into his chest and sent the teen flying.

Jack coughed up blood as he impacted the bulkhead and the flesh mounds tried to wrap around him. He winced as smoke bellowed from his body, but the pain helped to keep him focused. Before the tentacles could wrap their bits around him Jack activated Fira, spouting blasts of red-hot flames from his palms that immediately set the area around him ablaze. The walls around him shuddered, screeching in pain and releasing Jack.

He hit the ground. Hard, his shoulder making an audible popping sound as he mustered all his strength to fight through the agony of his lungs mending themselves back together to evade the monster barreling down upon him.

[WATCH OUT!]

Heading The Angels' warning, Jack tucked and dove out of the way.

FIRA!

Rolling to his feet, he sent out multiple bursts of flames at the beast as it swiped at him, kindling the bird in flames. Fortunately, this time it only succeeded in nicking him lightly but the force of the attack caused an overdraft that sent Jack tumbling.

[WARNING! HP POOL IS BELOW-

Rolling to his feet, Jack blinked the notification away, completely focused on the massive Demonspawn stumbling back as it's body suddenly erupted in flames, coating it in a red hot light that sent the scent of grilled meat into the air. The monster thrashed about, letting out inhuman squawks of agony as its feathers only served to spread the flames and buy the teen more time to recover.

Although the smoke billowing off of Jack’s body indicated he was healing, his HP bar was tanking. He needed to run. And run now if he wanted to live. However, thinking of his sister and noticing the bodies of humans fused into the meat walls, he began to imagine her sharing their fates.

[SEE THIS IS WHY I TOLD YOU THIS WAS A-]

Where exactly is the Nest?! Jack demanded, cutting the Angel off. Sahaqiel appeared in front of him, pointing toward a mound that appeared like a massive red flower in full bloom, of course, if the flower had teeth. Jack dashed to the meat flower and prepared Gehenna as the monster behind him began to recover from the ignition.

The bird let out a squawk, charging at the teen who was digging his arm into its Nest. Jack clenched his jaw, hoping that his gamble would work as his left arm began to glow, and his right arm angled toward the barreling gray monstrosity.

His MP bar filled quickly, but as much as it filled it also drained, all of the MP being used to douse his would-be assailant in sticky hot flames. After a few moments of constant flame throwing, his body involuntarily shivered as his arms began to ache.

[FIRA LvL UP!]

(Increase potency of flames)

Luckily a notification appeared to distract the teen from his pain. Jack immediately felt the difference, if his flames were a small campfire then they had just been doused with gasoline. He didn't allow for the fortuitous upgrade to distract him too much though, he kept blasting the charred bird monster even as his arms ached from the overexertion.

[Jack your body can't take much more of this. We need to move or figure out a new plan!]

"I can't! Not until the Nest is dead!" Jack screamed, wishing that his Pain tolerance would level up already.

Suddenly the flower let out an inhuman wail causing him to flinch from the vibrations of its death screech. But he didn't stop, he couldn't, not until he saw the death notifications. Fortunately, the titanic bird beast approaching him seemed incredibly weak to fire, but that didn’t mean it was stopping. It slowly stomped its way to Jack despite illuminating the entire cavern from the flames licking off its skin.

[Half-Bloom Nest of Rex Drained!]

Jack blinked in surprise at the notification.

Jack was hoping for a skill that would prove useful in this situation but his inward grimace was cut short by the Death Bird roaring and slamming into him.

Jack flew into the air with an audible crack as the breath was knocked out of him. He collided with the bulkhead, causing his vision to blur before falling back down and being immediately skewered by the creature’s razor-sharp claws.

“Guah!” Jack went wide-eyed as he tried to breathe but only managed to gasp once before the taste of copper flooded his mouth. He looked down, watching as his blood dripped off the monster’s claws that were stuck in his chest. The creature pulled him close, roaring before opening its maw to bite him. Jack responded by driving his hands into the monster’s mouth and activating Fira on top of Gehenna’s gasp.

“I h-hope. YOu choke oN. ME!” Jack growled out as the monster’s beak tore into his right shoulder and ripped something red out, causing his arm to go limp. But he could still activate his Fire ability through it and continued doing so. Even as the monster seemed to become oblivious to the flames cooking its skull and focused on devouring him.

Jack was feeling weak now, eyeing his HP bar as it hit zero, but he had no regrets. He had a life insurance signed to Jill and killing the Nest now insured her safety. Plus, as much as he was worried about it, he was sure Captain Domino would take care of his sister.

[FAILSAFE ACTIVATED!]

Suddenly the entire cavern of dried meat was flooded with a brilliant radiance that snuffed out all visual stimuli around the pair as they struggled. When the light died down, Jack's body was now covered in a golden aura with runes coating his skin up.

He kicked, dislodging himself from the stunned monster's talons and landing on his feet. Preparing himself, smoke wafted off his body as his HP bar soared and his right shoulder stitched itself back together, returning functionality to his limb as the monster roared in rage.

Jack responded in kind, letting out his own battle cry as he charged at the vicious creature.

The two collided, with Jack winning out and sending the monster flying through the withered meat wall.
