“A genius level cook! You’ve got to be kidding me, S-Rank and a genius profession level? I want you to go cook me something right now!” the feisty grandmother, Betty exclaimed.
Koshiro, the jaw dropping kitsune clapped her hands. “Please, please!”
“I can give it a shot. I haven’t actually cooked anything yet, but I’ve gotta start somewhere,” I stammered.
“It’s settled then. You have free reign in our kitchen. Whip me up whatever you like,” Betty instructed as she pointed toward the door leading to the kitchen.
I nodded and walked toward the kitchen entrance hearing footsteps behind me. I stopped and looked for the source. Koshiro followed me with a big smile on her face. I smiled warmly at the gorgeous woman. Her different colored eyes were striking. One was sapphire blue and the other was emerald green. These colors mixed with her long fiery red hair made my heart skip a beat.
“Everything okay?” said the kitsune as her fluffy ears fluttered.
My face reddened at the realization that I had stared at her far too long and made things awkward. “No, sorry. Hehe.”
“Koshiro, let the man cook and stay with us. We need to talk about some amendments to the work schedules,” Betty demanded.
Koshiro rolled her eyes. “I think he needs someone to show him around the kitchen. I mean, come on,” Koshiro motioned for me to continue.
The kitchen was much larger than I anticipated. Several ovens and stoves lined the wall as well as cleaning stations. “Wow, this is nice.”
The kitsune shrugged and began to whisper. “Eh, it’s okay for what we do here but compared to other restaurants in Summerstar this is rather underwhelming.”
“I heard that Koshiro! My kitchen is just fine, thank you very much! Why don’t you go work for these other restaurants then!”Betty roared from her table in the trashed dining area. I saw Muni, cleaning the debri from the carnage earlier. She had tied her long blue hair into a ponytail.
“Sorry, your kitchen is legendary,” the kitsune replied sarcastically, “I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.”
This girl had some sass, and I liked it.
“We have electricity on my home world that makes the appliances work. How do you run these?”
“These are arcane appliances. They’re powered by magical energy.”
“That’s pretty nifty.”
I actually used the word, nifty? Was I a 94 year old man? Damn Chad.
“Come here, I’ll show you,” Koshiro replied and began to skip over to the closest oven.
As I approached and focused on the cast iron oven, I was met with a blue screen, and I read out loud what I saw.

“How did you know that?” the redhead inquired.
“I have genius level cooking skills.”
Koshiro’s two tails drooped and her ears fell backward. “Oh right, maybe you don’t need me after all.”
“I absolutely need you. I don’t know where to find ingredients or anything like that. Not to mention your delightful company.”
The kitsune swooned. “Really? What do you want to cook?”
“Gosh, I don’t have a clue. I know thousands and thousands of recipes at this level. I picked some sunberries earlier and have hundreds of recipes at my disposal for just those berries.
“Do you want to cook something with sunberries?” she asked.
“I think I want to try something different. Do you have any meat?”
“Yeah, we had some fresh prairie boar meat delivered yesterday afternoon. It’s in the arcane cooler over here.”
The appliance looked like a really large refrigerator. It was made of some kind of metal and there was a faint blue glow around it. “Ah, is that glow the arcane energy?”
“Yes, that’s right.”

I pulled the handle and was greeted by radiant blue energy. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust but the bright light didn’t cause me any pain. Each type of food that I looked at gave me the option to click on a menu to show the huge list of recipes. I found the package of boar meat and accessed the menu.

I wanted to try something a little fancy so I scrolled through the menus and found an option for prairie boar chops. I found something that made my mouth water and something told me that this was what I should make — garlic wine sauce prairie boar chops.
“Got it, now I need ingredients. There are lots of spices for the special sauce especially. You may not have them all.”
“I think you’ll be surprised. That is one of the things that Grandma Betty keeps on hand…plenty of ingredients. What do you need?”
I began to read her what I needed, and she darted toward the cupboard and then to the arcane cooler then back to the cupboard grabbing items in record speed.
For the Boar:
4 prairie boar chops without bone
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoons olive oil
salt and ground pepper, to taste
Breading:
1/3 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
3 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/2 lemon juice
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
4 sprigs fresh thyme
2 sprigs rosemary
Shockingly, most of the ingredients were here in the cupboard and cooler. There were a few things that required some improvisation, but my genius skill assured me that these changes would work.
When I started it was as if my hands had minds of their own. In my real life I’d never been a great cook. My fanciest dish was usually Kraft macaroni and cheese. I began mixing up the breading and coating each chop. I tossed them in the pan and listened to the fantastic sizzle. The aroma of the spices and meat filled my nostrils and made my eyes roll back into my skull. As the meat cooked on the arcane stove, I whipped up the sauce easily and combined the two together.
From what I could gather, arcane stoves worked much faster than non-magic stoves. Burning the meat or cooking it too long wasn’t a worry. My genius skill allowed me to adjust temperatures perfectly and flip the meat to result in perfect tenderness.
Koshiro stood beside me quietly in awe at my cooking skills. After I placed the chops on plates, I put a small piece on my fork and partook. The meat almost melted in my mouth and the sauce was to die for. This was definitely the most delicious meal I’d ever prepared in my Earth life. I used the same fork and softly put the meat into Koshiro’s mouth. She moaned with closed eyes then licked her lips.
“This is divine. I can’t believe you cooked this like it was nothing.”
I smiled warmly and picked up a couple of plates. “Thank you. Let’s go eat.”
