CHAPTER 20

“Hey you two! Welcome back!”  Betty shouted from the counter.

Koshiro pointed upward. “Where the hell is the restaurant sign?  That didn’t get damaged.”

“Clever girl.  Nope, it was perfectly fine. I had it taken down a couple of hours ago.”

Koshiro placed her hands on her hips. “Why would you do that?”

Betty nodded at the blue-haired cat girl sweeping the already shiny floor. “You tell’em Muni.”

Muni paused her cleaning and looked at us for the first time since we walked in.  “Grandmother is going to change the name of the restaurant.”

“Why in the name of the Nine would she want to do that?” asked a bewildered Koshiro.

“Because I want this to be a fresh start with a new name.  This place is kind of like a phoenix that has risen from the ashes.  We also have a S Rank genius level cook on staff.  The food is going to change for the better,” Betty said with a sparkle in her eye.  She was clearly excited about this new beginning.

I raised my hand like I was in school, wanting to be called on. “What are you going to name it?”

“That, I don’t know, but I’m working on it.  I’ll take suggestions as well.  So feel free to tell me any of your ideas.  Got it?”

Koshiro and I nodded, then looked at each other with a grin.

“Muni told me about you two kissing in the street.  You didn’t waste anytime did you, girl?”

We’d decided to wait to tell everyone about Koshiro’s imprinting.  We didn’t want to deal with any of the fallout.  I didn’t expect any fallout, but Koshiro was determined that there would be.  She was so outspoken normally, which baffled me as to why she would want to keep such a thing hidden from the people that she was closest to.

Muni leaned her broom against a table and walked over with a brow raised.  I knew she knew something.  She just had that look about her. With each step she took, we took a step backwards.

Muni raised her index finger slowly and pointed directly at Koshiro.  “You’ve imprinted.  I know it.”

My face reddened, and so did Koshiro’s.  She shook her head quickly and stuttered.  “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Betty slammed her fist on the counter she leaned upon. “Oh, my Gods. You’ve got to be shitting me.”

“Stop lying,” Muni demanded.

“Alright, alright.  Yes, I imprinted last night, and Chad accepted me.  We’re tied together now forever.  I have first harem girl bragging rights!”

“I knew it,” Muni smirked.  She crossed her arms under her giant rack, pressing them upward and nearly out of her shirt.  She had on a white tank top that showed her ample cleavage and abnormally short black shorts on.  This was her most revealing outfit I’d seen her wear since we met.  She looked good… really good.

I felt a hard elbow into my side… right between the ribs.

“Quit staring at her boobs. Fuck, I’m standing right here.  At least give me a day as the only girl in your harem.”

I attempted to act innocent, but my red face and broken speech told a different story. “I’m not staring. Really.  I’m really not.”

“It’s okay, just learn to be a little more discrete.  Her tits are nice, I understand. Speaking of tits, why are you dressed like a whore today, Muni?”

The catgirl’s eyes widened, and she looked at her attire, then back at the kitsune. “Whore?  I’m not dressed like a whore.”

“You’re trying to impress Chad.”

“I’m doing no such thing.  Take that back!”

“Fuck taking it back. It’s true and you know it.”

Muni’s face turned a bright shade of red.  “I’ve… I’ve got work to do.” She spun around and grabbed her broom and stormed into the kitchen, out of sight but not out of mind.  From Muni’s reaction, Koshiro must have hit the nail on the head.  She had dressed more provocatively for my benefit.  Maybe she did like me.

“You girls,” Betty scoffed as she wiped the counter off with a white rag.

I spent the rest of the day learning my way around the kitchen and testing out some recipes.  Betty wanted to change up the menu along with the name.  Each dish I put together knocked their socks off.  I even modified some of the food on their current menu to make the dishes even better. Betty decided to keep the restaurant closed for a couple of days until we freshened up the menu and put up a new sign.  The old lady was banking on me and my skills a lot.  I could deliver without a doubt, but the pressure was a bit unnerving.  Betty didn't want to change the menu too extravagantly, but she wanted to serve more fancy dishes in the evening.

The mayor delivered the biggest surprise of the day.  His daughter, Ivory, was turning ten years old the next day, and he wanted Betty to cater and bake a cake.  He apologized for the short notice, but the caterer that agreed weeks ago cancelled.  Betty wasn’t happy that he didn’t ask her to begin with, but to the dismay of Koshiro and Muni, Betty agreed to take on the challenge.  I told them not to fear.  I would cook hamburgers for the little girl’s birthday party.  Betty was skeptical about the food I described, but she trusted me completely in the end. Luckily, the restaurant had a nice stock of ingredients and fresh beef on hand that I could use. I immediately scanned through the hundreds of recipes that I had as a genius level cook.

I found the recipe that I wanted to try.  There were hundreds to choose from, but I didn’t want to be too fancy.  This was a child’s birthday party and a great old-fashioned burger would be a hit.

All American Burger

1-1/2 pounds ground beef

3 tablespoons chopped onion

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic salt

½ teaspoon of smoked paprika

4 ounces of Chopped Bacon

Combine the beef, chopped bacon, chopped onion, garlic salt, smoked paprika and pepper in a bowl.  Then shape into patties, ¾ inch thick.  This particular recipe should produce six patties at that particular thickness. Cook over medium heat, 4 to 5 minutes per side.

Betty’s kitchen had all the ingredients that I needed, so I wouldn’t have to improvise at all.  It amazed me at how quickly my hands worked as I prepared the food.  Even though the ingredients had precise measurements in the recipe, I didn’t have to use a measuring cup.  My hands just knew what to get out. I tossed all the ingredients listed in a large wooden bowl and mixed everything together with my fingers as Koshiro, Betty, and Muni stood looking at me work.  They were in awe of the ease with which I put together these recipes and cooked everything to perfection.  After the patties were cooked impeccably, I placed slices of cheddar cheese on each of the juicy patties.  The meat was hot enough in the pan to cause the cheese to bubble and melt.  Using my spatula, I scooped out each patty and placed them on the soft wheat bread buns on four plates.

“I’m going to whip up some homemade kettle cooked potato chips to serve with them with the sack of potatoes I saw in the cupboard.  They should be a hit with the kids.  Let me know how you like the burgers,” I said, as I selfishly bit into my burger.  A symphony of flavor bombarded my mouth.  I could taste each of the ingredients perfectly and they all went together beautifully.  The meat was juicy and almost melted in my mouth.  I would call this recipe a win. “Damn, that’s good.  What are you waiting for?  Eat up.”

Each of the women bit into their burgers simultaneously.  They chewed slowly and moaned as the flavors danced on their taste buds.  The juices of the meat mixed with the melted cheese dripped from the bottom of each of their burgers onto the plate below.  Koshiro took her finger and scooped the droplet and tasted.  “Mmm, this is so fucking good, Chad.”

“I agree.  Chad, you’re going to do great things.  Your cooking is perfect,” Betty added with a mouthful of beef.

To my surprise, Muni had devoured almost all of her burger before the others got a quarter of their burgers down.

Muni chuckled as she wiped her mouth with a napkin.  “I’m sorry for being such a pig.  I’m starving, and this hamburger is too good to eat slowly.”

“Don’t worry about it.  It makes me happy to see others enjoying food I cooked.  There’s two more in the pan. Do you guys want them?”

All the woman held up a hand in protest and shook their heads in almost perfect union.

Betty shook her head.  “No, I’m trying to watch my figure.”

Koshiro and Muni burst into laughter.
