Gustave had rapidly grown in the first few months of his life. When he first opened his eyes, they were dark blue eyes with which most tiger and lion cubs were born. This did not change with Gustave, but while his consciousness was not returned he was just a normal baby. He was relying on his parents for his every need. This was a result of the newborn brain just being incapable of supporting a consciousness like Gustave's so it was kept unused.
Plus for the first three months of his life, he had no teeth so he was totally reliant on his mother's milk to sustain himself. His teeth only began to grow when he was 4 months of age which was when his parents began to feed him a mix of high-protein foods. Including meat, but his main source of food was still breastmilk.
Gustave continued to grow in size throughout his first year of life. Now that he was a year old his consciousness had still not returned, so little Gustave was still a normal toddler. At the moment he was on a rug on the floor with both his parents filming him. He was standing up and wobbly walking toward Jason who was on the floor.
"Come on son, walk."
Anastacia filmed as their son took his first steps. Gustave unsteadily walked toward his father's open arms step by step until he reacheds them.
"Got you, Gustave."
Once his father got him, Anastacia walked over and rubbed his head.
"I am so proud of you."
"Da."
When they heard that Jason smirked at his wife.
"He said da. His first word is me."
Anastacia growled in irritation.
"Damn it. How is that fair? We both spent the same amount of time with him."
Jason held his head high.
"I am just the fun dad I guess. He loves me."
"He loves both of us, you big dummy."
As they bickered something changed behind Gustave's still-innocent eyes. It was as if the neurons in Gustave's brain began to fire off at all cylinders. He went quiet as he blinked a few times. Gustave had not returned to himself just yet, but partial parts of him began to wake up. His parents noticed how he went quiet and were worried, but that all went away just as fast.
He was waking up, but his brain would need a while to truly contain his mind. Jason brought Gustave up to his face, but he did not see anything odd anymore. It was like those quiet seconds did not happen as his son was back to normal.
"What was that about?"
Anastacia looked at her child and also did not know.
"I got no clue. Something must have distracted him."
They just ignored it for now as it did not last very long. This was the first time this happened, but also not the last. Every year that passed from his first year more and more of the real Gustave woke up. His personality began to change slightly. From a happy child, he started to become more reserved, but still not a cold-blooded monster like he once was.
For one, the experiences he had as Gustave in this life were taking precedence over what he experienced in the past. Yet they were affecting him on a deep level the more that his mind woke up. He was being taught by his parents English and he was picking it up rather fast. He picked up faster than should be expected.
They taught him some history of the world how Herbivores and Carnivores while acting like things were nice, they were not. Carnivores eating herbivores never went away with it just being done behind closed doors. Jason had the means to get fresh meat often. They still taught their son that while they did eat meat to not think of herbivores as just food.
They were people as well with lives and he should respect where the meat he ate came from. These lessons stuck with Gustave as they prepared him for kindergarten. America did not ban hybrids from going to school as they allowed them to have the same rights as other citizens. However, they had to be evaluated by a psychologist to make sure they were not brain-damaged with dangerous traits.
Scitzifrania, bipolar and psychopathic tendencies tended to occur in hybrids, especially when the parents were too different. Herbivore carnivores hybrids were the biggest examples of what could go wrong, but not always. So they had to be sure, and Gustave's parents wanted to keep him with them for longer to ensure he was ready.
--
Just as they agreed, once Gustave became 6 years old they felt he was ready to go to kindergarten. Gustave opened his now dark green eyes and yawned. Today was his first day of school after his parents taught him as much as they could to prepare him for it. He sighed as he got out of bed and went into the bathroom look at himself in the mirror.
"Not a bad body I do have to say."
Gustave's partial consciousness had returned, but there were blanks in his knowledge. He knew his name, and what he used to do, but not the actual experience. He needed more time and there would always be partial blanks in his knowledge. Once he did his business, Gustave went back to his room and put on his school uniform.
Just as he was doing that his mother walked in to help him get dressed. When she saw he was already dressed she smiled.
"Awww, you did it yourself."
The child parts of his brain lit up when he saw his mother.
"Momma. I did it myself."
She nodded and helped him with his tie.
"You sure did. Come on, and eat something. Remember, what we talked about?"
He nodded.
"Don't bare my teeth or claws at others. Don't talk about meat, and make friends."
She nuzzled his face and licked his head using the barbs on her tongue to flatten his hair.
"There."
"Thanks, mom."
He ran off to the breakfast table where his dad was waiting. His back was turned to Gustave who ran behind him and grabbed his tail.
"Got you."
Jason turned around and looked at his son.
"Oh no. Whatever will I do? Oh wait, I know. Team up."
From behind Anastacia grabbed Gustave's own tail which caused him to let go of his fathers.
"Ah."
His parents laughed at him but sat him down on the table. His mother served him a bowl of beef stew. Not really beef, but it still came from a bovine. Before they dug in, they all closed their eyes and gave silent thanks to the animal that they were about to eat. Even Gustave did the same as his parents had raised him well.
Once they gave thanks they dug in and enjoyed a filling breakfast. They avoided eating raw meat which could cause a carnivore to become bloodthirsty so they always cooked their meat. Once they got done eating, Gustave and his parents went to the SUV to drive him to the Elementary School.
Gustave got quiet once they were in the car as he pulled out his Cell Phone. He went to Google and began to do more research on hybrids, laws, history, and biology. Gustave the mercenary always did his research. He hated going in the dark to anything and the moment he could think he had been searching for anything he could.
In this world, animals had always been sentient and in the past humans existed. They still do, but they only make up around 5% of the total population. Most of them lived in communities with herbivores despite their omnivore traits. The Carni Herbivore war was the one big event that effected this world.
For one before that, Herbivores had 3 times the population they do now. They had lost big numbers in the war with the carnivores killing them and eating them. A carnivore that ate meat was many times stronger than one that did not. In a fight, a meat-eating lion would always beat the vegetarian lion.
'So interesting.'
His dad got his attention as they arrived.
"Gustave, we are here."
He looked up and put his phone in his pocket.
"Oh. My bad."
Before he left his parents wished him luck. His mom patted him on the head.
"Call us if anything goes wrong. That is why you have your phone."
Jason agreed.
"Yeah, ignore anything they tell you. Hybrids don't have it easy."

"I got it. Love you.
"We love you."
Gustave got out of the SUV and walked toward the teachers. He already knew that his first period was going to Social Studies. One thing was that his first period was going to be full of Carnivore Hybrids and regular Carnivores.
'Is this discrimination?'
Gustave did not care if it was, but he was ready for it. He was snapped out of his thoughts as he got called on by a jaguar teacher. He was his social studies teacher and homeroom.
"Don't daydream already. Nice to see you again Gustave."
The teacher found his hybrid students memorable as there were not many and he knew most of thier names. When Gustave saw his teacher he ran up to him.
"Mr. Townly. You found me already."
"Not easy to hide as a Liger. Don't get lost already."
Gustave followed his teacher until he found the rest of his class. Of the 30 students in this class, around 12 were hybrids. All carnivore hybrids and there was even a rare herbivore carnivore hybrid among them. He had passed the psychiatric evaluation to be here. The rest were mainstream carnivores, wolves, bears, lions, and even an alligator.
'Wow.'
Mr. Townley looked at the list and called out each name and species.
Each kid raised their hand and said here when they heard thier names. Gustave listened to each of the unique hybrids around him until a bear next to him got his attention when the teacher called out.
"Sarah Willls. Growler Bear."
She raised her hand and answered.
"Here."
She looked almost just like a polar bear, but her face had a large brown patch on it. Her uniform hid the rest, but Gustave did notice bits of a Grizzly hump on her shoulders.
"Cool."
"Thank you."
He was next after her and the last.
"Gustave Jahir. Liger."
"Here."
Once Mr. Townly found all his students, he waved for them to follow him.
"Come on, let's get to class. Form two lines and find a buddy."
Sarah and Gustave paired up just because they both were not social people. The rest of the students just matched up randomly and followed behind their teacher until they got to class. Once they arrived they were assigned a seat and paired up with the other student they picked. Most hybrids matched up with each other while the pure breeds matched with each other.
Once they were seated, Mr. Townly cleared his voice as he walked to the front of the class.
"Alright, kids. Today will be an easy day and let's just start with introducing each other and your species. Let's start with you, Noah."
Noah was the Herbivore Carnivore herbivore. He matched up with a Coywolf, a mix of Coyote and Wolf. He walked up to the front of the class and kept his mouth shut. To Gustave, he looked like a regular Zebra until he opened his mouth. It was filled with thick pointy crushing teeth. His hands also had claws which Zebras did not.
"Uh, I am Noah. My dad is a Zebra and my mom is a Hyena."
He seemed to not like opening his mouth. Looking closer his stripes were also mixed in with some black spots. His ears were also more like a hyena showing his hybrid status. Sarah next to Gustave looked curious along with the rest of the class. Mr. Townly wanted to get his class to understand just because they were carnivores and hybrids they were not monsters.
"Noah, how has your life been so far."
Noah smiled.
"Good. Mom and dad love each other."
The rest of the class seemed curious so the teacher looked at the rest of the class.
"Anyone curious about Noah?"
Sarah raised her hand to ask something.
"Yes, Sarah."
"Uhh, what do you like to eat?'
Noah smiled.
"Vegetables and bug shake. I like crickets and apples."
Bugs were a meat alternative that many carnivores ate. Even Gustave had his fair share of bugs in this life. The sole Alligator raised his hand to ask something.
"I heard that hybrids like you can't taste. Can you?"
Noah nodded.
"Yes. Watch."
He pulled out an apple from his pocket and put the whole thing in his mouth and ate it in a few spots. His tail wagged and he smiled happily. The teacher was glad that he shared.
"Thank you, Noah. Any volunteers?"
Gustave raised his hand and was called to the front.
"I'm Gustave Jahir. My mom is a Siberian Tiger and my dad is a Barbary Lion."
The class all wanted to know more, but Sarah asked the first question.
"What do you like to eat?"
"I am not big on vegetables, but I like berries and fruits. I also like all kinds of bugs like beetles."
An eagle girl raised her hand curiously.
"Do you see better in the dark than Tigers and Lions?"
Gustave nodded.
The whole class shared more of each other so an easy day indeed. Everyone got a turn and the whole class got a good way to break the ice. Gustave and Sarah stayed quiet next to each other for the rest of the class. Both were not big on conversation, but they would have to get used to it as they would be stuck with each other. For longer than they expected.
