After a few minutes of walking down city streets, Haru and the guards arrived in front of a massive church. Haru craned his neck looking up at it, noticing the intricate details of the stained glass windows and the spires on the roof with wide eyes.
"In here, come," Jiro commanded, as he dismounted his horse.
Haru did as he was told and followed Jiro into the building while the rest of the guards moved on. As they entered the building, the smell of incense overwhelmed Haru's nose. The interior of the church was clean but ancient, having a particular musty feeling as the two walked down the hall and into the sanctuary. Jiro marched his way down the aisle between the pews and approached a priest who was cleaning the altar. The priest looked up to find Jiro's stern expression staring back at him.
"Ah! Captain! What an honor to see you here today! Come to pray to the gods?" he asked
"Not today, I'm here on other business," Jiro replied. "I need your help actually."
Jiro then pointed towards Haru.
"This man claims to have appeared inside the hero's home outside the city. I was hoping you might be able to verify that."
The priest's eyes went wide hearing the news. He stepped forward towards Haru, wanting to get a better look.
"Young man, is this true what the captain tells me? Did you come here from the house on the hill outside the city?"
"Well…yeah actually I did. I was brought there from my…uh…town, my town, by…something…." Haru responded, not wanting to bring Reina up.
The priest looked him up and down in amazement.
"Then it's true! The prophecy really has been fulfilled!"
"What prophecy?"
"Ah. You see, a hundred years ago our greatest oracle declared that one day a visitor would arrive in that house, and they would go on to save us from a terrible evil! Ever since then that house has sat abandoned, waiting for you to arrive."
The priest placed his hands on Haru's shoulders.
"Don't you see my boy? YOU are the hero of the prophecy!"
Haru was stunned, unable to process the information right away.
"I'm…the hero?"
"Yes! You fulfilled the prophecy! You are the one who will defeat this evil and save this world!"
Excitement grew inside Haru. Being a hero meant fame and fortune, but most importantly, it meant women, and that's what he was all about. But a wave of caution washed over his fantasy quickly, as he realized he might be in over his head.
"Just what is this…'evil' exactly?" he asked.
"The Demon Lord," Jiro replied.
"The what?"

"The Demon Lord," the priest repeated. "The greatest evil to ever attack this world. Surely this is what the prophecy spoke of."
The priest glanced behind him, then motioned Haru over.
"Come, I'll show you."
The priest led Haru over to a giant stone mural that was mounted on the wall behind the altar. He pointed up to it, gesturing to the different pictures while explaining the story behind it.
"Since the beginning of time, there have been Humans and Monsters. We humans built civilizations based on trust and companionship, while the monsters built theirs around power and control. The monsters have fought with us time and time again, attacking our societies for our prosperous nature.
"We've been able to defeat these insurgents time and time again, but then came the Demon Lord, a monster so powerful and terrible that they nearly destroyed the entire world. The Demon Lord led an army of monsters against humanity in a bid to destroy us once and for all. Many were slain trying to stop their forces, and more were taken as prisoners.
"All seemed lost until our oracle prophesied a hero would emerge among us, one who would strike back against the Demon Lord and defeat them once and for all! That hero united many monster tribes against the Demon Lord's forces, and together they turned the tide of the war and slew the Demon Lord themself.
"After that, this world has seen relative peace. The monster tribes that sided with humanity were welcomed into human society, where they've thrived alongside us. The rest slunk back into their caves, waiting for a new opportunity to strike. The hero retired with his family to the house on the hill, where he died many years later."
"So if the Demon Lord is dead, why would they return?" Haru asked, rather confused.
"According to the hero, the Demon Lord will reincarnate when they die, which means they'll return one day to try destroying us once more," Jiro replied. "Which means it'll be your job to defeat them again."
"Look young man," the priest said, pointing to the Demon Lord's image on the mural. "THIS is the evil you are destined to defeat!"
Haru looked up at the Demon Lord's depiction, anxiously thinking about how he was going to pull off such a task. But as he stared, a terrible chill overtook him. He realized that there was something familiar about this Demon Lord, a particular pair of horns sticking out of their head.
"Oh no…." Haru quietly said to himself.
"For now we'll get you somewhere to stay," Jiro said. "Come with me. We can worry about your training some other time."
Just then a guard burst into the sanctuary, wheezing and coughing from running all the way there.
"Captain! I have news!" the guard shouted. "There's been a sighting of an unidentified monster entering the hero's house!"
"Did you alert the other guards?" Jiro asked him.
"Yes sir! They're already on their way over there now!"
"Good. Surround the house. We'll have them cornered."
The guard ran back out of the sanctuary as Jiro continued what he was saying earlier.
"Right, so as I was saying. I-huh?" Jiro said before he stopped short. He looked around the room, realizing that Haru was no longer there with him.
