“We celebrate the coming of age for the crown princess Sonya!” A member of my father’s court shouted before being joined by the whole room as they cheered before downing their drinks. It has been a whole two years since my fortune was told and Amati was prophesied to be a great heroine and in those years I haven’t seen her since. Amati was taken to a far-off land to train and be taught to be a great warrior while I am left to await my destiny. “What a fine young royal woman she has grown to be!"

‘Tch, has everyone forgotten what happened two years earlier? It is as if they are waiting to be attacked and subsequently saved by Amati.’ I thought to myself as I gracefully drank my own beverage. The festivities continued as such for several more hours with more and more people dropping like flies due to drinking alcohol all night. Eventually, the main hall was nearly empty as all was quiet.

I, of course, was still sober and awake. My destiny foretold has not made me as carefree as my fellow nobles, in fact, quite the opposite. Every day since I go every waking second dreading if this would be the day that this ‘great evil’ will finally strike. I have been doing so long that in all honesty I almost want to get on with it. It was then that I heard a loud but distant bang outside the palace walls.

It was unmistakable and it was soon confirmed by a frightened messenger falling inside the palace in fear and shock. “The demon king is here!” The messenger shouted before falling to the floor in panic. I looked around to see everyone but the servants passed out or otherwise out of commission, even my parents have fallen asleep on their thrones. A louder and much closer series of bangs were heard as the demon king continued his assault.

As the highest-ranked person that was currently available, I stood up from my table and stalked barking orders, remembering all I have been taught since childhood. “Servants, I order an evacuation! Get as many people out of the palace and surrounding city out as quickly as possible!” I ordered them to follow after a second of it sinking in. Another few minutes of noises followed before another bang made it all silent.

A large boulder was shot from most likely a catapult and tore open the palace gates. The boulder then unfurled to reveal that it was in fact not a boulder, but some sort of monster girl with power over the very ground itself. Behind this monster girl walked a few more monsters and a large demonic figure that I assume to be the ‘demon king’ I heard so much about. “Am I to assume you are the ‘great evil’ I have been warned about?” I questioned the demon king not backing down as he stopped in front of me.

The demon king merely smirked at me before moving past me towards my now very awake parents. “What is the meaning of this!?” My father shouted, not likely grasping the severity of the situation. Instead of answering the demon king wordlessly had a blade protrude from their body which hit father square in the chest, killing him instantly. A hush fell between mother and me as we were both struck silent by the quick death of the king.

The demon king gripped the king’s shoulder before tossing him with ease off the throne he was just sitting on, leaving a clear stain on the back of the throne. Mother rushed to where father’s body landed and cried as she looked upon his form. Seemingly unperturbed by it all, the demon king sat down on the father’s former throne with a mad smile on his face. “Got to give it to him, the ex-king had a taste for thrones.” The ground monster girl commented as the demon king sat down.

“He did indeed.” The demon king commented in a booming voice casually as if the past few minutes didn’t happen. He then turned his head to mother who looked back with her running makeup and then at me as I looked back with a scowl. He then chuckled before stating, “My name is Maou and I am the demon king. You two are now my hostages, stay in line and I may not relieve you of what you formerly thought so little of.”

Thinking it wise to take his words to heart I simply stayed silent yet showed my anger with the vicious stare I gave him. Mother, in too deep an emotional state to properly think this through, did the opposite. “You dastard as if you think we will-!” She screamed before she was interrupted by her sudden being frozen. Her skin then looked as if it turned to stone and she was soon petrified into a statue.

“Thanks for the assistance, Media.” Maou thanked one of his minions who seemingly petrified my mother. The invisible monster then revealed herself, making sure to look well away from anyone, showing that she looked to be a gorgon of Greek myth. “You’re quite welcome, masster.” The gorgon named Media hissed.

Maou then turned back to me and saw that I was still glaring back at him. “Eulises, take the princess to her room!” Maou commanded before a loud series of thuds heralded the arrival of the giant Eulises. Eulises seemed to be not comfortable in the palace as the top of his head nearly reached the roof. The giant said with a low tone the following words, “Follow me.”

Sensing it was unwise to obey I choose to indeed follow him toward my room. He then watched as I entered my own bedroom, locking the door behind me, and after a few moments, a series of thuds proved to me he had left me alone. I then ran to the window and looked out to see a woman with wings staring back at me, perhaps there to make sure I didn't escape. She looked back at me before smiling widely.

Now that I knew I was being watched I sat down on my bed in shame as I hung my head low. Hours passed by before the first light of the next morning caused my eyes to flutter open, also revealing that I had fallen asleep unknowingly during the night. A knock soon followed and with trepidation, I answered back. “Come in, not like you need my permission.” The door opened to reveal it was indeed Maou the demon king.

I was silent as he walked into the room and only stared at him with anger in my eyes as he approached me. “Now, now, don’t be so down. I have come here to simply talk as I think we have got on to the wrong foot.” Maou began as he sat on the bed next to me causing me to scoot away. “I see… I understand of course but I implore you to at least try and listen to what I have to say.”

I defiantly held up my glare towards him. “The destined heroine will defeat you.” I said with anger evident in my voice. “All that needs to happen is for her to learn of what happened here. Then she will-”

“Enough.” Maou said loudly, causing me to go silent. “A mage has escaped and warned Amati, the so-called ‘destined heroine’, of what has happened. Unfortunately for you both she isn’t strong enough to feel me as the heroes of yore did.” He said before standing up from the bed and facing me as I am still on the bed.

“Alone perhaps.” I admitted. “Still, she won’t be alone. She already has her teacher and this mage who escaped to warn her aiding her. A couple more warriors and they can easily take back the kingdom.” Maou only grinned back at my words before chuckling evilly to himself.

“Your trust is misplaced. I will love watching it be shattered when she and her party fell to my might. Afterward, I will indulge myself with you and conquer the rest of the world.” Maou stated before walking out of the room and locking the door behind him. Left alone I began to hope that Amati would pull through and defeat the vile demon king.
