Emily fidgeted nervously in her seat as she and Olivia waited for her parents to arrive. She couldn't help but feel a sense of dread, knowing that her parents had been less than accepting of her relationship with Olivia in the past.
As they waited, Olivia took Emily's hand in hers, giving it a gentle squeeze. "Everything will be alright, Em," she said reassuringly, and Emily felt a little bit of the tension in her body ease.
A few moments later, Emily's parents arrived. Emily stood up to greet them, and Olivia followed suit. Her parents didn't seem thrilled to see Olivia there, but they were polite enough, exchanging pleasantries before they all sat down.
For a few moments, there was an awkward silence. Then, Emily's mother cleared her throat. "Emily, your father and I need to talk to you about something," she said, her tone serious.
Emily felt a knot form in her stomach. She knew what was coming next. "Is it about Olivia?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Her father nodded. "Yes, it is. We still have some concerns about your relationship with her."
Emily's heart sank. She had hoped that her parents would have come around by now, but it seemed that they were still opposed to her dating Olivia. She opened her mouth to say something, but Olivia beat her to it.
"May I speak, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson?" Olivia asked, her voice steady and calm.
Emily's parents looked surprised but nodded their assent. Olivia took a deep breath before speaking.
"I know that you have concerns about Emily and me being together," she said. "But I want you to know that I care deeply for your daughter. She means everything to me, and I promise to always treat her with the love and respect that she deserves."
Emily felt a surge of warmth in her chest as she listened to Olivia's words. She knew that Olivia was sincere in what she was saying, and it meant the world to her.
Olivia continued speaking, her words coming faster now. "I know that we might not fit into the mold of what you expect for Emily, but we love each other, and that should be enough. All we want is your support and understanding."
Emily's parents looked thoughtful, and for a moment, there was silence. Then, Emily's mother spoke up. "We may not completely understand, but we do love you, Emily. And we want you to be happy."
Emily felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She had been so scared of losing her parents' love, but now, it seemed that they were willing to try and understand.
Olivia took her hand again, giving it a gentle squeeze. Emily turned to her, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. They might still have some hurdles to overcome, but as long as they had each other, they could face anything.
