Chapter 1: The Rabbit Meets the Wolf

Let's start this by meeting our Xiao Le. 

 

Xiao Le is not smart, not handsome, not tall (Xiao Le: I am 170cm... For a guy, they said it’s short! T.T), does not have any special talents and he is not rich either.

 

So what are Xiao Le’s good qualities? Well, he is hardworking and also very kind-hearted. He puts 101% in everything he does and how he treats others. Even if someone is rude to him, he will just smile and treat the person with sincerity because he has the mindset that the person may be going through a bad time. That's right, he only sees the good in a person. 

 

Perhaps the reason why Xiao Le is so nice is because he is an orphan. He was abandoned when he was just a baby. And the director at the orphanage always taught him that having a good heart is the most important thing. And since Xiao Le never had any family and experienced love, he believed that if he is nice to others, others would like him too.

 

With Xiao Le being so kind, you would think he is a pushover. That's right! He is! Since he was young, he would give in to others and allow them to bully him. When he was a child, people would snatch his toys or snacks. When he was a student, they made him copy notes for them. Now, he is a 25 year old adult working as an administrative assistant in a company and he is still being bullied! 

 

"Xiao Le, buy me coffee."

 

"Okay!"

 

"Xiao Le, photocopy this!" 

 

"Okay!" 

 

"Xiao Le, I need you to stay late and help me type this report!" 

 

"Okay!

 

Don't you feel like smacking him for being so silly? Or even protect him?

 

But thankfully, there was a person who would always watch Xiao Le since they were children. Xiao Gui is Xiao Le's best friend. They are from the same orphanage and have been friends since day one. They even went to the same school and are now working at the same place. They even each bought cheap one bedroom apartments that were side by side. 

 

Perhaps you could say Xiao Gui keeps following Xiao Le since they are both orphans and have been relying on each other for a long time. Xiao Gui took pity and helped Xiao Le when he was bullied once. He would do his best to protect Xiao Le but if Xiao Le is this nice... And dumb, there is only so much Xiao Gui could do. He would still try his best to protect Xiao Le though. 

 

"Sigh, they have hands and legs, they can get their own coffee. Why the hell did you go and buy for them again?" Xiao Gui scowls at Xiao Le who is happily carrying six coffees as they walk back to the company after lunch. 

 

"It is fine. They need coffee for energy! And if our colleagues are productive... The company will do well..."

 

Xiao Gui genuinely feels that Xiao Le is an idiot, even if he adores his best friend. 

 

The company that they work in is a big company called 'T Company' that owns several shopping malls. All they heard before regarding the new CEO of T Company is that he is very mysterious and that his name is Gao Tian. 

 

He is the only son of previous CEO Gao who took over three years ago when his father fell ill and retired to recuperate. No one, not even the Directors, have seen this big boss before. They all liaise all matters strictly with CEO Gao’s assistant.

 

Nothing is found about him online. Not even a picture. Xiao Le and Xiao Gui entered the company 2 years ago but they still haven’t seen the CEO. 

 

But ever since this CEO took over, the company has been doing extremely well in profits. They heard it is because he is extremely intelligent and ruthless when it comes to doing business. 

 

Xiao Le and Xiao Gui are just two administrative assistants in the purchasing department. They both do their jobs well and do not really care much about anything else outside of their league. So, they are not like others who are extremely curious who the big boss is. 

 

Gao Tian is only 24 years old but he is indeed in a different league from many. He is smart and graduated from Harvard early. He also has extremely good looks with a tall height of 185cm. (Xiao Le: T.T). Basically, he is an elite. 

 

But Gao Tian's personality is extremely cold and guarded. Because when he was young, people only liked him because of his status. So when he realized that, he shut everyone off. 

 

He became extremely private too so that no one could get close to him. And being raised by maids and assistants, anyone else but his busy parents, made him incapable of knowing what love really is. Thus, he does not even date or show interest in relationships, just doing one night stands. Plus he is absolutely ruthless, especially in business. 

 

Perhaps, if you put him in a novel, he will be the ultimate villain who works behind the scenes, manipulating people to do his bidding!

 

So, how did our silly Shou meet our cold Gong? 

 

It happens on one very ordinary night. 

 

Xiao Le was bullied to stay back and tidy up a huge stack of files. And on that day Xiao Gui was sick so Xiao Le insisted he went back home first. Since Xiao Le is so stubborn, Xiao Gui had no choice. Besides with his flu, he might be more of a burden to the task. 

 

Xiao Le cheerfully made a cup of coffee and got to work. At 7pm, more and more of his colleagues got off work. They snicker seeing him arranging the files so seriously. 

 

"That Xiao Le is too easy to bully..."

 

At 730pm, before his Deputy Director leaves, he gives Xiao Le a file. 

 

"Bring this up to the 25th floor later and leave it on the CEO assistant's desk. This is very important, don't lose it! The CEO requested this information and he wants to see it by tomorrow."

 

Xiao Le is stunned. He has never been up to the highest floor which belongs to the CEO. He clutches the file tightly and says," Yes Deputy Director! I will do a good job!"

 

The Deputy Director rolls his eyes. It is just handing a file... He was just too lazy to go on his own. The Deputy Director had no idea he inadvertently became cupid ????. 

 

The Deputy Director leaves and Xiao Le goes up, hugging the file like it is his life. He knows if he loses this, it will be the end for him. The lift goes all the way up to the 25th floor very smoothly and quickly since there is no one else. 

 

The lift doors open up and Xiao Le steps out.

 

Imagine a rabbit stepping into a wolf's den.… but no one expected it then. 

 

There is no one at the receptionist desk anymore since it is late. So Xiao Le moves forward down the hallway. At the end of the hallway is the CEO's office. Outside the office is a desk, which belongs to the CEO's assistant. 

 

Xiao Le's eyes grow wide. There is a guy sitting at the desk. The assistant has not left? 

 

Xiao Le walks up to the guy with a friendly smile. "Hello, my name is Xiao Le from the Purchasing Department. I am here to submit this file."

 

The guy at the desk looks up and Xiao Le takes a step back instinctively at those cold eyes! This guy... Why is his aura so fierce ah!!

 

Maybe he is having a bad day... It is not easy to work for the CEO. Maybe the CEO bullies him since he is working late too! So Xiao Le gives him a bigger smile to encourage him. But that guy just continues to stare at him coldly.

 

Before the guy can say anything, Xiao Le notices something. "Your finger is bleeding!" 

 

Xiao Le drops the file on the desk and immediately grabs the guy's large hand. The guy stares at Xiao Le, he opens his mouth and in a low voice says, "It is just a paper cut." 

 

He wants to pull his hand back but Xiao Le is grabbing on to it firmly. "You still need to tend to it! Do you have a first aid kit here?" 

 

The guy expressionlessly points to the table. There is a first aid kit there already. It seems he was trying to tend to his own injury already but Xiao Le did not notice. 

 

"Let me help you!" Xiao Le says sincerely.

 

Xiao Le does not even give the guy a chance to say anything. He pulls a chair over on the other side of the desk and sits beside the guy. He takes out the antiseptic to disinfect the cut. The guy doesn't even flinch as he watches Xiao Le work on cleaning the cut with focus. No one knows what he is thinking. Once the cut is all clean, Xiao Le pulls out his wallet. He takes out a childish, cute mickey mouse plaster. 

 

"The first aid kit has plasters." The guy points out the plain white ones in the box.

 

"But this is so much cuter! I always carry them around. When you look at it, your mood will be better and you won't think about the pain too!" He proceeds to carefully wrap the guy's finger with the cute plaster.

 

"There!" Xiao Le keeps everything back in the first aid box neatly before standing up. "I need to go now. Please help me hand this file to the CEO. And take care of your cut!" 

 

Then, Xiao Le, who is happy he completed his task and helped a person along the way, walks away with a little skip in his step.

 

The guy stares at Xiao Le's back as he disappears into the lift. The guy then looks down at the Mickey Mouse plaster on his finger. 

 

It should be pretty obvious to you now the guy is not the assistant. But is the CEO himself!

 

Gao Tian stayed behind to finish some work. Wanting peace, he even asked his assistant to go back first. While looking through some documents, he had gotten a paper cut. He knew his assistant kept a first aid box in his desk drawer so he came out to look for it. As he found it, Xiao Le appeared. 

 

And Xiao Le has no idea who he truly is. Gao Tian keeps staring at the Mickey Mouse plaster. Then, he remembers Xiao Le's cheerfulness despite being glared at by him. Gao Tian is guarded and distrustful. But he also has a good eye for character. Xiao Le was being genuine to him because he truly did not know who Gao Tian was. Gao Tian smirks. No one has caught his interest before. 

 

He eventually comes to this conclusion: His company has an idiot. A rather lovable idiot.

 

Gao Tian goes back into his office with the file and picks up his phone immediately. He calls his assistant, Xie Min, who picks up right away. 

 

"Xiao Le, from the purchasing department. Find out everything about him." He orders while staring at the plaster. 

 

"Yes, Sir. Is there any reason why?" Xie Min finds the request unusual and asks politely. His boss did not usually care about the lower ranking staff. 

 

"Hm, just want to know. That's it. By tomorrow." 

 

Xie Min knows better to question further and only promises that he will get it done before Gao Tian hangs up.

 

That night, Gao Tian kept staring at the plaster. 

 

… 

 

The next day, Gao Tian parks his car in the basement of the car park. To keep his identity hidden, he has his own car park and own lift to his office directly. 

 

When he steps out of the car, Xie Min is already waiting for him. Xie Min hands him a file as they walk to the lift together. 

 

Gao Tian removes his sunglasses and exchanges them for the file. He flips through it while Xie Min summarises. "Xiao Le, 25 years old. He is an orphan. Only have one close friend called Xiao Gui, who also works in our company. He has worked in our company for 2 years as an administrative assistant. Extremely hardworking, no bad history but seems to have a pushover personality."

 

Gao Tian listens in the lift as he stares intently at Xiao Le's file. His eyes somehow automatically go to the section that says 'Dating History'. It is completely empty. And that pleases Gao Tian. He has never felt such a feeling before. 

 

He shuts the file and hands it back to Xie Min. "No one knows who I am, right?" 

 

Xie Min nods. "Yes, Sir." Indeed no one in the company knows Gao Tian's identity. Xie Min is the one who handles all face to face meetings. 

 

"Get me a position in the purchasing department. As low ranked as possible." Gao Tian says seriously. 

 

"Sir, to get to know this Xiao Le?" Xie Min asks.

 

He has been Gao Tian's assistant for the past 3 years and is extremely loyal to the Gao family. This is the first time he has seen Gao Tian interested in anybody. 

 

"Hm." Gao Tian nods. "And the report they gave me yesterday is utter rubbish. The figures of amounts are off. I have suspicions. I want to look into it personally."

 

"Understood. I will make arrangements right away."

 

... 

 

Two days since Xiao Le was tasked to deliver the file has passed. With how busy he is, Xiao Le has forgotten about the guy whom he helped. Until... 

 

"Xiao Le, Xiao Gui." The two look up from their computers to see that it is the Deputy Director. A tall guy is standing beside him with a cold icy gaze! 

 

Xiao Le's eyes widens. This guy!! 

 

"This guy's name is Ah Ming. He is our new intern. He is previously from another department but he is transferred here to gain more experience. Xiao Le, you are in charge of guiding him." The Deputy Director, our little cupid, orders him and leaves. 

 

Honestly, he is a little annoyed that the Director suddenly told him there is a new intern today. He decides to throw the tiresome job of babysitting to Xiao Le. 

 

"Hi, my name is Xiao Gui! This is Xiao Le." Xiao Gui introduces them both.

 

"Mm." Ah Ming nods his head politely. His eyes are still cold but Xiao Le feels they are not as scary as that night when he first saw them. 

 

"Um...Xiao Gui, let me show him around." Xiao Le just wanted to pull this Ah Ming aside and ask him clearly. 

 

He drags Ah Ming to the file room and pushes him inside before closing the door. Ah Ming raises a brow as he looks down at the guy shorter than him by one whole head. 

 

"I didn't know you were that tall..." Xiao Le mutters enviously. The last time, Ah Ming was sitting down. "Anyway, what are you doing here as an intern? I thought you were the CEO'S assistant!" 

 

"I never said I was the assistant." Ah Ming, who is actually Gao Tian replies to him calmly while lying. "I was an intern in the CEO's office too. I helped the assistant. Now that he doesn't need my help, he has transferred me here."

 

"Oh, so it is like that ah..." Xiao Le scratches his head and smiles, immediately believing him! 

 

Gao Tian, thinking, This guy... How has he survived in  this world for so long being so stupidly trustworthy?

 

But Gao Tian also realizes he has never seen someone as genuine like this in his life before. 

 

And Gao Tian has never experienced this feeling before - he really wants to protect this idiot. This feeling of wanting to protect someone...it is strange but good. 

 

But Gao Tian is still a guarded person so he decides to get close to Xiao Le first before revealing his identity. 

 

"So how old are you?" Xiao Le asks. 

 

Gao Tian, "24."

 

"I am 25! You can call me gege!" Xiao Le pats Gao Tian on the shoulder (Xiao Le: I need to lift my hand so high... ><). 

 

"...Gege?" Gao Tian blinks. 

 

"Yeah! And as a gege, I will take good care of you, Ah Ming. I won't let anyone bully you!" Xiao Le says solemnly. 

 

Gao Tian, thinking, I doubt anyone can bully me. It seems like you are the one who always gets bullied.

 

But the words he says are completely different from his thoughts. 

 

"Then, please take care of me." Gao Tian gives a smile. 

 

Xiao Le blinks. That smile... This didi is really handsome! 

 

But if anyone looks closely, behind that handsome smile has a smirk hiding. 

 

… 

 

Just one week after joining their department, Ah Ming is already extremely popular. Thanks to his good looks, all the ladies, and even some men, keep flocking to him. They treat him really well. 

 

"Ah Ming, join us for lunch today." One of the older ladies is asking again. 

 

But as usual, Ah Ming shakes his head. "I am eating with him." He points to Xiao Le beside him. 

 

He has lunch with Xiao Le every day and Xiao Gui will join in too since they are best friends. (But Gao Tian does not really bother much about Xiao Gui). This makes Ah Ming's fans jealous of Xiao Le.

 

"Um, Ah Ming, I brought my own lunchbox today. And Xiao Gui needs to go run some errands. You can go eat with them." Xiao Le wants Ah Ming to be friends with the others too. As an intern, if he knows more people it would be beneficial. 

 

"I will buy something to bring back and eat with you." Ah Ming says seriously. 

 

Ah this guy... Xiao Le can only nod. 

 

The ladies give an unhappy look as they leave. Xiao Gui also leaves as he needs to run his errands. Besides, Xiao Gui is pretty sharp. For the past week, he feels that Ah Ming seems to be rather attached to his best friend. And Ah Ming seems like a person who can protect his silly best friend so he is fine. Maybe it would not be so bad if Xiao Le finds a boyfriend after being alone for so long...Clearly, Xiao Le is more 'wife' material than a 'husband'. Xiao Gui is silently rooting for Ah Ming. 

 

"Actually, if you do not mind, I can share my lunchbox with you. There is more than enough food for two people." Xiao Le offers as they sit down in the empty pantry. 

 

Gao Tian nods. "Did you cook all these?" He asks as Xiao Le opens the two tiered lunchbox. 

 

There is indeed a lot of food and they all look delicious. Compared to the fine dining that Gao Tian is used to eating... Such home cooked food seems more tasty! And after eating lunch with Xiao Le for 1 week, he started to appreciate simple yet delicious food more. 

 

"Yeah. Xiao Gui came over for dinner last night and I cooked. But I ended up cooking too much..."

Gao Tian's eyes narrow. He is a little jealous at hearing that Xiao Le cooked for another guy... Even if it is his best friend.

Gao Tian is happy that Xiao Le will cook for him. But there is no way he would allow a lightbulb there! He starts eating with Xiao Le, who keeps chatting happily with him. The warmth that Xiao Le makes him feel... He really wants to be the guy who protects Xiao Le and be the only one who can bully him! 

 

After eating, Gao Tian goes to a corner and calls Xie Min. "This Friday, find a way to make Xiao Gui busy. I want to be alone with Xiao Le."

 

"…Yes, sir." Xie Min feels a little helpless. What could he do? But since his boss gave the order, he has no choice.

 

Xie Min waits for Xiao Gui to return from lunch, watching the security feed. When he spots Xiao Gui walking through the entrance, he quickly exits the security room and takes the same lift as Xiao Gui. By luck, it is only the both of them in the lift.

 

Xiao Gui keeps glancing at the tall handsome guy beside him. This guy is almost as tall as Ah Ming and just as handsome. This guy… is completely his type! For years, Xiao Gui has been busy taking care of that silly Xiao Le. Now that Xiao Le has Ah Ming, maybe he should focus on his own happiness too? 

 

In Xie Min's head, he is still wondering how to ask Xiao Gui out. Not because he is interested in the guy but because he just wants to follow his boss's orders.

 

But before he can open his mouth, the extremely active Xiao Gui steps before him and takes initiative. "You're my type. Can we go on a date?" 

 

Xie Min doesn't know if he is lucky or unlucky… But he replies, "... Okay. How about Friday?" 

 

… 

 

On Friday, to Xiao le’s surprise, Xiao Gui declines and leaves first. Xiao Le finds it strange because his best friend has never declined free food before. He decides to ask Xiao Gui about it  later. 

 

"Tonight it is just the two of us. We need to go to the supermarket first. I need to get the ingredients to cook." Xiao Le says to Ah Ming after they pack up. 

 

Gao Tian/Ah Ming nods. He has never been to a supermarket before but he is just happy that he can be alone with Xiao Le. 

 

They leave the office together. Xiao Le happily prattles off the list of ingredients he wants to get while Gao Tian listens attentively. They are both oblivious to the hateful and jealous stares directed at Xiao Le by Gao Tian's fans. 

 

They go to the supermarket near Xiao Le's apartment. Xiao Le takes a shopping basket and to his surprise, Ah Ming takes it from him. 

 

"Let me." Ah Ming says. 

 

"Oh, thanks." Xiao Le beams at him cutely.

 

Gao Tian’s inner thoughts: ... This guy is trying to tempt me. 

 

They shop with Xiao Le checking the item he wants before placing it in the basket Gao Tian is carrying. The atmosphere is like a husband accompanying his wife but Xiao Le is oblivious while Gao Tian is enjoying it.

 

At the checkout counter, Gao Tian takes out his wallet but Xiao Le pushes his hand aside.

 

"Let me pay! I am the one treating you to dinner. Besides, intern pay is not high. Let gege treat you." Xiao Le is insistent but this fool does not notice the expensive branded wallet Ah Ming is using.

 

Gao Tian really wants to "punish" this idiot but to keep up with appearances, he can only nod. After paying, he carries all the bags before Xiao Le can protest.

 

As they leave the supermarket, it starts to rain. Neither of them has an umbrella. Thankfully, Xiao Le's house is only a few blocks away. So they start running. Gao Tian, the young master, has never had to run in the rain before and get drenched. They reach Xiao Le's apartment. 

 

"You will catch a cold. Quickly go and change." Xiao Le insists, handing him a towel and some clothes. "These are the biggest clothes I have…"

 

He knows Ah Ming and him, their height and size are incomparable. He pushes Ah Ming in the toilet before he can protest and shuts the door.

 

Gao Tian is uncomfortable in the wet clothes too so he changes. He comes out wearing Xiao Le's clothes. The tee shirt barely reaches his waist, almost making him look like Winnie the Pooh bear and the sweatpants reach just above his ankles. It looks really ugly even on a handsome guy like Gao Tian but the comforting thing is, the clothes smell like Xiao Le.

 

He sees that Xiao Le is unpacking the bags in the kitchen. Xiao Le looks up and chuckles. "At least they fit you in a way. Give me your wet clothes to dry."

 

Gao Tian hands over his clothes and Xiao Le hangs them. He notices that Xiao Le has changed too. "Where did you change?" 

 

"Hm? In the bedroom."

 

Gao Tian purses his lips. I missed a good opportunity to see him changing.

 

Xiao Le notices that Ah Ming's hair is still damp. "You did not dry your hair properly! Come here! You will catch a cold."

 

He walks over and makes Ah Ming sit in one of the dining chairs. He takes the towel Ah Ming is holding and dries his hair for him. Gao Tian can't help but feel a sense of bliss. No one has done this for him before. All his nannies and servants were too scared to touch him. 

 

Xiao Le dries Ah Ming's hair with care. When he is done, he smiles at Ah Ming. "All done! Let me go cook now."

 

"Do you need my help?" Gao Tian can't cook to save his life. He is just asking out of courtesy.

 

Thankfully, Xiao Le is a good host. "I can manage. Just go watch TV and rest." 

 

So Gao Tian sits down on the sofa and switches on the TV. But his eyes keeps glancing towards the kitchen. Seeing Xiao Le in his apron, humming happily while cooking, this kind of homely image is once again new to Gao Tian. And he likes it. The atmosphere is once again of a husband and wife. The wife is cooking while the husband rests. 

 

When dinner is almost ready, Gao Tian stands up and walks to the kitchen. "Let me help set the table at least." 

 

Xiao Le beams at him. He points to the cupboard where the bowls and chopsticks are kept. Soon, the two are seated at the small dining table which is filled with dishes. Rice, fish soup, stir fried vegetables and scrambled eggs. 

 

"I can only cook such simple dishes…" Xiao Le smiles embarrassingly. 

 

"They all look delicious." Gao Tian is honest. 

 

His direct compliment makes Xiao Le blush a little. Other than Xiao Gui, he has never cooked for anyone else. 

 

It makes Xiao Le wonder.. when did Ah Ming become part of his life like Xiao Gui is? But it is good to have more friends! So he is happy about it. 

 

They start digging in and Gao Tian eats happily. Xiao Le seeing that he likes the food, keeps filling his bowl with food. 

 

"I wonder where did Xiao Gui go too…He rushed off today." Xiao Le says out loud. 

 

Gao Tian shrugs. But he knows. He knows that his poor assistant sacrificed himself to carry out Gao Tian's orders. He distracts Xiao Le by talking about the food again and Xiao Le of course is easily distracted. 

 

After eating, it is raining heavily outside so Xiao Le says, "Ah Ming, why don't you just stay over? Besides tomorrow is a weekend, there is no work."

 

If you look closely, you can perhaps see Gao Tian's wolf tail wagging in delight. He smiles and nods. "Okay. Thank you for taking care of me."

 

"Aye, I promised to as a gege! It is still early, let's watch TV and eat some oranges."

 

So the two sit on the sofa together side by side, watching a comedy that is playing. Gao Tian smiles to himself as he watches Xiao Le laugh while peeling oranges for him. 

 

Suddenly, it made him realise that the past 24 years of his life has indeed been very empty… No one being this sweet and genuine to him. So he decides that he must make Xiao Le his. He wants to be able to spend his days with Xiao Le every day from now on. 

 

After the show ends, it is almost 11pm. Xiao Le is sleepy. But he only has one queen sized bed in his bedroom. 

 

Being a good host he says, "Ah Ming, take the bed. I can sleep on the sofa."

 

But Gao Tian is a smart man. "Does Xiao Gui sleep over sometimes?" He knows the two best friends are close, even if Xiao Gui lives just next door. 

 

"Yeah he does. Especially when his air conditioning unit is spoiled." Xiao Le answers innocently.

 

"Where does he sleep?" 

 

"Oh, we share the bed." Xiao Le. 

 

Gao Tian is fuming inside. The possessiveness in him is rising again but he forces himself to calm down. After all, Xiao Gui is not a competitor. But over his dead body will he let Xiao Le sleep beside another person ever again! 

 

"So why can't I share the bed with you too?" Gao Tian asks, pretending to be innocent. 

 

"Oh! I am fine. We are both men after all." Xiao Le laughs. "I was just worried you would be uncomfortable." 

 

"I won't be." Gao Tian smiles. 

 

That is how the two end up sleeping side by side. Because of Gao Tian's height and slightly muscular frame, it is a tighter squeeze compared to when Xiao Le sleeps with Xiao Gui.
