"Ready, beautiful ladies?" Markus removed the dark sunglasses he was wearing when she and June approached the Subaru. He's looking fresh and very handsome with his khaki pants, white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled off to his elbows and his wearing a pair of brown loafers on his feet.
June gawked at him for a moment before she averted her eyes. However, her reaction didn't escape Jess's watchful eyes.
It is the weekend, so Markus finally had the chance to fulfill his promise to her and June. When they first arrived in Mumbai, he promised to show them around the city. They didn't expect him to fulfill his promise. They thought it was just lip service.
Both she and June asked to meet Markus outside the villa. They had a tacit understanding not to let the others know that they are going out with Markus. They both know, even though it is a friendly date, it could stir up some scandal at work since Markus is basically their boss. And they shouldn't go out on a weekend with their boss.
Markus didn't ask why they asked him to meet them in the coffee shop. The same coffee shop where she used to hang out.
"Ready! But where are you taking us?" She held Markus's arm to stop him when he opened the passenger door for her. She stepped back to let him open the backseat's door. Because of June's reaction to Markus's looks, she decided to play cupid.
She just shrugged her shoulders and grinned at Markus when he gave her a questioning look.
"You'll see when we get there," he smiled brightly at June, leaving the passenger open for her.
Jess smirked when June's blush seemed to redden. It would be interesting, she thought to herself, watching Markus gently close the passenger door once June got in the car.
"What are you doing?" June asked her in between clenched teeth as she turned to her side, snapping her seatbelt in place.
"You seem to like Markus." She chuckled.
"I could say the same to you. You even took a photo of him in secret." She clicked her tongue. But she was far from being angry.
She leaned forward. "I have a boyfriend and he and Markus are friends," she said quickly before Markus could get in the driver seat.
June widened her eyes on her. She could no longer probe Jess for Markus was putting on his seatbelt and after glancing at the backseat to make sure, Jess is wearing her seatbelt, she started the car.
June slightly creased her eyebrows with Markus' action. He was clearly checking Jess. But she keeps her mouth shut and takes a mental note to ask Jess all about her questions later.
"Thank you for taking us out. I know you're busy," June said, breaking the silence inside the car as they drive along the busy street.
"No biggie. I promised you, girls, on a tour. So, here we are." He glanced over his shoulder, giving June a quick look. She looks pretty in her red sleeveless dress with white cherries all over her dress. What caught his eyes was the pendant she was wearing around her neck. It looks quite familiar, but he didn't stare too much at it since the pendant of the necklace was resting on the swell of her breast from the square neckline of her dress.
"Still, thank you. I know you're busy." She smiled, joining the conversation. Markus was shooting down June. It seemed like he's drawing a line between them. Which is not good. Because if he did that, she would fail to be their cupid. And she doesn't want that. She hates failing.
"What's the best way to spend a weekend other than spending them with pretty ladies?" He winked at June who giggled.
"So, where are you going to take us?"
"You aren't good at surprises, are you Miss Zimmerman?" He stared at her from the rearview mirror, waiting for people to cross the pedestrian lane before slowly driving away for a few more minutes and Markus declared they had arrived.
Jess looked outside the window and noticed that they were in a courtyard of an old building. She scrunched up her nose, thinking what Markus has in store for them.
"We'll walk to get there, but just for a few minutes. Not that far. We just need to park the car." He informed that as he quickly got out of the car, opening the doors for them.
June and Jess looked around the area as they walked to where Markus wanted to bring them.
Once they reached the place he wanted to show them, Jess gasped. She was familiar with the colossal arch-monument that appeared in front of their eyes. The Indo-Saracenic style mixed with Gujarati architecture took her breath away as they stood a few feet away from the arch that was built in 1911 to commemorate the British colonial legacy in the country—the structure is called The Gateway of Mumbai.
"It's amazing," she breathed her admiration to the massive structure.
"Noah did say you like this kind of thing," he whispered. Which was totally unnecessary because June walked ahead of them, busy taking photos.
"You asked Noah what I like?" A crease appeared between her brows while her heart skipped a beat.
"Well, I have to inform him that I'm taking you out. And you know Noah, he started telling me things you'd like even when I didn't ask for his opinion," he chuckled.
The corner of her mouth curled into a bright smile.
"Noah can come off as an asshole...he's an asshole after all." He laughed when Jess clicked her tongue. "He didn't mean bad. He just got fucked up with that witch ex-wife of his. Please, go easy on him."
She scoffed. "Did he ask you to be his speaker?" She asked, sarcastically.
"No. I'm saying it as his friend. Because I like you, you know."
Jess was left with her mouth half-opened. She didn't know how to deal with what Markus said.
"Jess, let's take a photo."
June's cheerful voice snapped her out of her thoughts. "Okay!" She walked to where Jess and Markus were while her heart was skipping a beat. She suddenly misses Noah.
