Chapter 4: 4 : New experiences

    The slow drip of water wakes Max up. He stretches his sore muscles as he steps out of the shed. The morning is foggy and dull. The berry bush's bright red berries stand out in the monotone landscape. Attracted like a moth to a flame he floats his way over. His eyes widen, his jaw drops, and his stomach rumbles. The bush has doubled in size, the berries look bigger and more colorful. Drool on his chin, Max plucks a handful of berries and tosses them dramatically into his mouth. The fresh berries explode with tartness as he shuts his eyes and puckers his lips. After opening them back up, a notification appears.

 

[Ding! First harvest!]

[Gardening tools received.]

 

    After enjoying the berries, Max decides to grow another bush. He cuts part of the bush off and plants it close by. With the new shovel he digs the hole in half the time. Still peckish, Max cuts off a sliver of mushroom. The log is covered in mushrooms compared to yesterday.  He skewers the piece with a stick and then roasts it over the campfire.

    Max pulls out the recently added pan from his inventory, and sets it on the fire. He removes the partially cooked mushroom from the skewer and places it in the pan. An enticing aroma develops around the fire. Unable to stop himself, he tastes just a spoonful. The savory mushroom forces his eyes to roll back and his shoulders to shudder. It's one of the best dishes he has ever tasted. 'I should start a garden' He thinks while he scoops the last mushroom into his mouth.

    With a newfound resolve he begins chopping down a tree to make space for his garden. Sweat drips from his brow as he makes his final chop. An intense groan from the tree interrupts his heavy breathing. The crash of lumber shakes the forest. Sun rays cut through the spray of dirt. As he prepares the wood a blue screen blocks his view.

[Woodworking tools received.]

 

    'I need different crops to grow' he thinks while washing himself off in the river. He eats his full of mushrooms before setting off up the river. Glints of light dart from the river's edge as he walks. Pausing for a moment, he stares hard at the water. Bulky fish swim against the current, feeding on the vegetation underwater. A few hundred meters upstream a creek drains into the river.

 

    Following the creek he comes across a wild potato. He carefully digs around the root using a trowel before putting it away. Still on one knee he gazes at his surroundings. He freezes on the spot furrowing his brows. A few meters away is an extinguished fire pit.

 

    He leaves the scene hastily, speed-walking the whole way back. Ignoring what he saw, he focuses on his garden. He cuts the potato particularly so it will grow more than one plant. After finishing planting, Max eats more mushrooms and lays down under the night sky. Unfamiliar stars twinkle smoothly as he falls asleep.
