It was November, the cold winds blowing throughout the quaint village, that rested snugly in the corner of the Great Forest. Warm candles lit the houses that the residents of the village occupied, filling the people with a kind of comfort that only came in the coldest months.
Though there was one home, seemingly filled with the same joy and comfort as the others, little did the villagers know that that was only a facade, as a great darkness had just appeared in that home.
That darkness came from a small child, around seven years of age. His name was Soren, he was quite the smart boy, able to absorb information like a sponge. He and his family; his mother and father, twin sister, and elder brother had been sitting at their dinner table like they always do.
His father joked with his elder brother, the rest of them laughing at the jokes. It all seemed fine until something happened. Soren was more quiet than he usually was, his face slightly pale, as he weakly laughed at his father and brother. His mother had noticed his odd behavior, and asked; "Do you feel ill Soren?"
Soren looked at his mother, "Ah, no I-I feel fine, I think I just played out in the cold for too long." He explained with a strained smile, as he had lied, since he had been in pain all day, though he didn't want to worry his parents, so he kept quiet.
A strike of pain flew through his body, making Soren groan painfully. His father was about to ask until the candles in the home suddenly flickered, followed by Soren's sclera turning an abyssal black, his bright blue eyes making it all the more ominous.
Soren screamed, holding his head in agony, as pain ruptured across his entire body. A blood-red mark appeared on his right hand; it had the appearance of two serpents entangling with each other, creating a circle, with a flame in the center.
"W-Whats happening to me.." Soren said, in a strained tone, looking at his parents. His right hand burned like it was set on fire. His entire body felt as if it was being pierced by thousands of blades.
His family looked at him in fear, pointing their utensils at him, jumping out of their chairs. "W-What the... Soren stay back!" they yelled at him. "No.. stop.. don't look at me that way.." Soren thought, his face contorted in despair.
"Help me..." Soren asked, reaching out to his family members, unable to walk well from the pain. They backed away as he stepped towards them, aggressively pointing their knives at him. "Why is this happening?!" Soren thought.
His eldest brother ran out of the room, returning with his sword, one he got from his knight training. "You may have been my brother, but now you are a monster. It is a knight's duty to remove such things." He exclaimed, his voice shaking.
Soren's eyes widened, "B-but I'm not a monster I'm your little brother!" his hands shaking from fear. He didn't understand, why was he being called a monster...
The intense pain slowly faded away, as he faced his family. "P-Please, wait... I don't know what's happening to me.."
"You are my brother no longer, the truth is on your right hand, that's the mark of the Forsaken." He explained, pointing to Soren's right hand.
Soren looked over at his father, whom his mother and twin sister hid behind. His father had a saddened look on his face, then opened his mouth; "Your broth- No, my son is right, you are my child no longer."
Soren's face turned cold, as he looked over at his brother, seeing tears streaming from his eyes.

"If you don't care for me anymore, then why haven't you struck me down yet?" Soren asked, in a cold tone.
His eldest brother gulped, wiping the tears from his eyes. "Get out..."
"Why won't you do it? I'm a monster aren't I?" Soren yelled angrily, tears streaming from his eyes."
His eldest brother ran at him, punching him in the gut, sending him flying into the front door. Soren grabbed his stomach, throwing up from the pain, after being hit with such force.
"Do you expect me to be able to kill something that used to be my brother!?" He yelled, his face filled with despair. He walked towards Soren, opening the front door. A cold breeze blew in the home, as Soren was thrown against the cold soil.
"Don't show your face again, or I'll have to kill you." His eldest brother said in a cold, stern tone, slamming the front door shut.
Soren lay in the soil, the faint light of the moon, reflecting light off of his tears. "What just happened..." Soren thought, digging his hands into the soil, as he was filled with many emotions from the suddenness of it all; He had been feeling off the past month, but said nothing, as he didn't want to worry his family. Would they have reacted the same if he had told them what was happening..?
No, he doubted it.
Did they really care for him at all? If his twin sister had turned so suddenly, would they have reacted the same way? Would they have thrown her out like this? He had done nothing to deserve this, he had studied hard, and practiced with the sword every day. He did everything his family asked of him, and this is what he gets in return?
They so easily threw him out, almost like they wanted to get rid of him, like they never wanted him born in the first place. Was all that love and care that was given to him just a facade? He slammed his fists into the ground, causing them to bruise and bleed. Why did the Forsaken mark appear on him? Is this some kind of cruel joke done by the gods of this world? Soren thought, looking up at the stars.
It's said the Forsaken mark brings great misfortune, eventually consuming its holder, turning them into a mindless monster. And so any child that has been found with one, is immediately given a death sentence. Even if he ran away from the village, this mark is known worldwide, so he would be hunted either way. Though if he could somehow control the curse then, maybe he could use it to his advantage.
Soren got up from the ground, his face stained by tears and dirt. He looked back at his home, then walked down the streets, disappearing into the dark of the night. He won't let himself die a dog's death, not yet...
