Chapter 23: CHAPTER 23 LEARNING BY WATCHING

After the ridiculous broom-sweeping contest, the exam naturally continues on its course.

Magical Ability Exam, Magical Ability Control Exam, Creation Magic Exam, Developmental Magic Exam, and Combat Exam. I am aware of the following tests that will occur, yet I cannot take advantage of this information.

I am but a low-mana-defect.

What I can do however is put effort into watching. Even just by observing alone, I will be able to learn things and realize something that can be of use to me.

Magical Ability Exam. A target made of bricks using earth magic protrudes in front of the applicants. Using our own magic, the captains expectantly watch the magical display. As I have no plans on wasting my mana for that wall, I ignore it.

Taking my ridiculousness to another level, I approach the brick wall. I climb the wall and sit at its top. Still holding on to my broom, I comfortably watch the Magic Knights applicants hitting their targets.

Jack the Ripper happily minces the wall in front of him to ribbons. Morgen is hitting the walls with his light orb like normal. Meanwhile, Yami is lazily slashing the wall in front of him with his stick. In one move he cuts it down to half. After that, he walks to a corner to mind his own business.

Magical Ability Control Exam. Papers with runic inscriptions float in the air in a certain rhythm. These papers serve as moving targets for all the applicants to hit. I see Morgen hitting all of them quite accurately.

Yami as always is doing his part very effortlessly, but this time, with a bit more hard work. Doing a sword dance, Yami hits the most amount of targets among the applicants in one stride. I watch in awe. Dark waves and moving shadows interlaces with the bright sun. It’s like an eclipse of celestial wonder.

Meanwhile, Jack is having a hard time hitting the moving targets. Sigh… Poor Jack. I closely watch these three people as they are special characters in the anime. In fact, the things I am learning at this moment are already the half amount of what I was learning at Drouot’s tower.

I show my abilities then… Carefully avoiding the stray magic with the help of Ki sense, I weave into the chaotic crowd while using my broom to sweep the falling and scattering paper shreds. Am I not amazing? I am an environmentalist that cares for the good of the people!

Creation Magic Exam. Now, this is interesting. I have too little mana to successfully perform one, but that doesn’t stop me from desiring it. If one were to ask me what is the coolest magic, then it would be creation magic!

Shaping your own to an image you desire is art! To be more specific, a destructive art! I believe magic is an art that exceeds the beauty of explosions!

Morgen takes the lead this time by creating a light show. It’s not just any fireworks, but moving pictures. Damn, that’s beautiful… It was his childhood with his twin brother.

Yami does something extremely simple. He conjures a sword. However, he is sweating while doing it. Maybe creating something of that size and density is too difficult for the current Yami, but he still manages to maintain it, evident in the one-meter trench in front of him. With just a slight twitch of his wrist, a trench like that appears!

Developmental Magic Exam. If Creation Magic is interesting, then Developmental Magic is the real deal. It requires severe training, an open mind, and most of all, talent!

I have my theories. Combining my knowledge as a Black Clover fan, and my knowledge from Drouot’s tutelage, I realize that Developmental Magic is about drawing the world’s laws to complement their own original attribute.

It’s like creating fake magic attributes from your main attribute, by reinterpreting your original magic attribute! This is how some Fire Magic Attribute mages are capable of healing, sealing, or even some ridiculous effects only achievable through runes, cultivation and etc. 

Jack who was having a hard time, suddenly beams a confident smile. Screaming his only magic’s name, he dares to act arrogantly in front of the Magic Knight Captains. “Kieegh~” With a strange cry, he screams his magic words “Death Scythe!”

An invisible ripple in space comes ascending to the Magic Knight Captain’s podium. Acier Silva as the host of the exams quickly acts on the provocation. She summons a [Steel Wall] with a whisper.

The other applicants sneer at Jack’s provocativeness. But Jack proves them wrong. Acier Silva’s Steel Magic cannot stand up against Jack the Ripper’s Slash Magic.

Acier can accurately feel her magic being cut up, yet it didn’t daunt her one bit. After Jack’s [Death Scythe] passes and cuts the wall in half, the crowd goes crazy. The two halves of [Steel Wall] come crashing down the floor with a clang.

Dust and debris start to scatter. Revealing behind it is Acier wearing her [Steel Armor]. “While it is thrilling you are gutsy, I request you don’t do it again. You might go to prison for this kid. Hahahaha… Anyways, that’s a very interesting Developmental Magic.”

At Acier’s laughter, Jack similarly laughs. “Ki-ki-ki~”

However, none of the other captains were laughing. They realize how serious the exams will be today. There are too many good seeds. Morgen Faust with his rare light magic. The foreigner, Yami Sukehiro with his rare dark magic. Neren Alviore with his rare shadow magic. And this peasant, Jack with his unique slash magic. 

Sabrina cannot help but have a crooked smile. Alas, the real treasure among the applicants is that one, the silent broom sweeper. It is disappointing to her why that broom sweeper keeps on playing the jester. How fun could it have been if he just show a little bit of his power? It’s not like she doesn’t understand why that jester is doing this. Still, it saddens her how people don’t know of this great investment of hers.

While my ear is itching, I marvel at Jack’s boldness. Scratching my ear with my little pinky finger, my gaze lands on Sabrina who for some reason is signaling me to come and meet each other.
