In the dark of the night, the vestige of his moss-green robe flutter in the moonlight. The monstrous sight of his long sharp blades shows a deadly luster warning his foes of the great brutality that he can wield.
This is the tale of Jack the Ripper.
After being rejected in the Knight exams, Jack didn’t give up. For someone like him who desires to battle the strong, Jack relentlessly pursues his ideals to the point that even an insect, like him, can find a place for himself in this dog-eat-dog world.
Training himself with his Slash Magic, Jack engages in his relentless bounty hunting. In fact, even if there are no bounties, as long as someone fits the ‘evil’ trait and is strong, Jack will definitely hunt that person or creature down.
Most often, because of the too many death battles, Jack’s kill count continues to increase. Though it is in his best interest to not kill his opponents, there are just times he accidentally does.
This is why Jack is so strict about picking his targets. They have to be unforgivably evil. They have to be strong. They have to be someone who people will rejoice for, once they die.
Jack isn’t a hero. He knows that. He is just a low-born who wishes to get strong. Regardless of that, people see him as a hero. Though people don’t exactly know his face and name, people start calling him the Preying Mantis.
It is an insect and is a very uncool name, but Jack loves it. An insect predating on bigger and stronger beasts, isn’t that charming?
At this point, Jack is already a full-time serial killer who brutalizes his opponents. Albeit that seriously scary vocation, Jack isn’t afraid of people calling him like that. Even so, it is not so bad either that people glorify him as a hero. Jack realizes that maybe he can try once more to become a magic knight.
Currently, it is the peak of noon, and Jack is just enjoying a rare free time of his.
Jack seats on top of a gargoyle near a high-rise building. Gazing at the sunlit hustle and bustle of the city, Jack contemplates a life totally different from a vigilante. “Next time, maybe I will try applying again for the Knight exams…”
From a far corner of his eyes, Jack sees a rapidly moving individual doing parkours from buildings to building. “Kakak, that’s some pretty amazing moves!”
Jack casually approaches the individual. To his surprise, it was just a streaker doing a dirty deed in broad daylight. “Kekekek, are you serious?” Jack was about to leave the streaker alone, but then, he takes a second look. “Wait, you look familiar, you were that bastard, aren’t you?”

This is the worst timing. Jack just has to see me like this. With my back straight, without any shred of shame, I confront Jack in my nakedness. “Why? Does my hobby bother you?”
First, I have to make sure that Jack doesn’t realize that I am actually a criminal on the loose. I don’t really know how the Knight exams did conclude. I can only bet on this one bluff. “Tell me, reject. What are you doing barring my path?” I try to speak as nobly as possible.

My sarcasm aside, it looks like my bluff is working.
Jack complains to me in annoyance. “You noble bunch are really annoying! D’ ya wanna fight?” He is about to slash me up, but I stop him at once by raising my hands in defeat.
I shamelessly drop to my knees with my head on the ground, this is a kowtow. “We are on the rooftop, so be glad that I can show you this begging display without a shred of my conscience being damaged.” I remain speaking arrogantly at Jack, I truly embody a noble’s spirit.
Jack was speechless. This must be his first time seeing a noble like me. Sucks to be you.
I am not keen on fighting Jack, our magic is a bad matchup. I bet Jack can even slash my [Dot of Singularity]. Among the magic I know, Jack’s is definitely the most straightforward. Not to boot, his Slash Magic is definitely the antithesis of my Singularity Magic.
After all, cutting singularity will always result in a definite outcome that embodies division. My [Singularity Divide] is just a poor imitation of Jack’s Slash Magic.
It makes me think, why is Jack in the anime so damn weak and lacks presence at all? Is it because of his weak Popularity Factor? Though he was a Grand Magic Knight and is at the Captain level, Jack in the anime is kind of underwhelming.
With his hunter-like intuition, Jack seems to catch on to my weird thoughts. “You are thinking about something rude, right? I will fucking dice and mince you. Kekekekek~”
“Calm down,” Still in my kowtow position, I chastise Jack. “I was only thinking, how the hell did you become a Grand Magic Knight?”
Jack doesn’t know what I am saying about thanks to his lack of education. “What are you saying, you bastard? You know what? Be grateful, I decided that I will help you from now on for a limited amount of time for free! Consider it a special service!”
Throwing me some clothes, Jack tells me to get a move on. “Wear it already, kekekekek! These are my spare clothes so be grateful. They just came from the laundry, so it still smells great! Kekekeke~”
I don’t know why, but I am getting the impression that I am talking with a pervert. “Greatly appreciated.” I quickly wear the low-quality linen. These clothes are really uncomfortable. Well, that is in comparison to the modern clothes that I usually wear. Even the aristocratic attire is inferior to the modern clothes I know.
Lu who was circling above me lands on my head. “Hey, they are coming. Let’s hurry.” The bird tells me with its chirping.
I hum at the bird indicating a yes. “Hmmm…” I don’t want others catching me talking to the bird. It was only later that I was reinforcing this rule.
I look at Jack, and with a thumbs up, I give my first order for the day. “You are hired, mercenary. Now, let’s run. We shall rush for House Silva’s residence. Let’s go!”
