Fanz and Domi are obediently walking beside me. Coaxing Domi was easy. Convincing Jack and Mereoleona though that I should send these two kids to the Diamond Kingdom is difficult. Thankfully, I was able to reason with them by using Fanzell’s status as a citizen of Diamond Kingdom.

I am just happy that Jack and Mereolena are not suspicious of how I know Fanz is a native of the Diamond Kingdom. With Fanz telling me the way, and me leading our excursion, we were able to safely traverse the Grand Magic Zone.

I put the things I learn from Jack into real-life application throughout the journey. Taking care of these kids is also not that difficult considering Fanz’s talents as a mage. With Fanz and I alternating in our night watch, we slowly gain confidence in ourselves.

The journey was certainly treacherous. We had to cross mountains, fight malevolent beasts and adapt to abrupt disasters. I hope of continuing this journey in this repetitive peaceful manner. Being able to react to these not-so-surprising dangers on my radar is the best outcome I can wish for!

Sadly, however, fate has a different opinion.

The moment I wake up, the first thing I see is a wand pointing at me.

Covering his face with his hood, and wearing the typical uniform of the Diamond Kingdom’s battle robes, is this nameless Magic Warrior. “Be careful, I might accidentally kill you.”

The first thought that runs through my head is where the hell are the kids? With no time to react, the Diamond Mage casts his spell. “Restraining Magic: Smoke Binding.”

The binding spell cleanly hits me. Like a rope, the smoke elements slither into my body until I cannot move.  My arms, my shoulders, my knees, my toes… Damn, I feel like singing in my head.

The Diamond Mage drags me by my hair. I’d love to retaliate but I have to get my priorities straight. Once I confirm the safety of the kids, then I’ll retaliate.

Using my Ki sensing, I realize that I am completely surrounded.

“Leader,” The Diamond Mage dragging me by my hair presents me to their leader. “He’s the only one I saw inside the tent, his mana is too low though. Maybe the real culprits have already escaped. Moreover, I didn’t find any grimoire in his person.”

Standing two meters tall, the giant exudes a pressure of a war veteran. He removes his hood displaying the many scars donning his bald head. Rather than a warrior, I have the impression that he’s more of a bandit.

The giant’s gaze is heavily pressuring me. Without mistake, this guy is about the level of a Grand Magic Knight. In other words, a Magic Knight Captain. This kind of pressure purely from mana can only be from someone at that level.

Lowering himself by crouching a little, I see the giant’s face more clearly. The giant spits on my face clearly humiliating me. “I never knew the Clover Kingdom will resort to these tricks. To think they are actually using children as sleeper agents. It is a mystery how you got this far here in the Grand Magic Zone.”

Children? Sleeper agents? It looks like there is a misunderstanding here.

The giant draws out his grimoire from his robe. It floats just beside him. This is no time to dally. I activate my oh-so-reliable switch in my head. I feel time slowing by a second allowing me leeway in making a reliable judgment. I scrutinize the giant’s grimoire. Judging by its teal color, it could be a grimoire specializing in earth magic.

Without missing a breath, the giant summons a hammer made of earth from thin air in an instant. That casting speed is insanely marvelous. The next moment, some dust gets into my eyes.

I feel someone grabbing me by my neck. My toes leave the ground. After that, through my Ki sensing, I sense a water projectile coming at me. I didn’t bother since I judge it as non-life threatening.

*Splash

The water projectile was just a harmless water spell to drench me. From the beginning, the Diamond Mages see me as more of a civilian than a soldier. This was my conclusion after the giant purposefully missed his hammer strike back then.

Aware that these Diamond Mages just want to intimidate me, I feel less threatened.

The giant continues his interrogation with his threatening glare. “Your plan to smuggle the kids didn’t work. Tell me, who are you?”

What should I do? Slaughter? That is pretty much the easy way out especially with my abilities. Still, I prefer if I can do things more peacefully this time. Unlike back in the Magic Knight Exams where I have plenty of access to information, I have almost nothing here!

Just what if, among the grunts of Diamond Mage grunts here, there is someone who has a role to play in the future? Accidentally killing that grunt will be my great dream’s demise.

“What is this?” One of the Diamond Mages carries a familiar broom. It was pitch black and ugly. “Leader, look at this. I saw it inside the room.”

Before even the giant leader comes to inspect the broom, a monstrous roar resonates in the area. “ROOOOAAAR!” In this deep forest where all sorts of beasts, just what kind of monster can make a sound like that?

Sweeping from above is an enormous mutated two-headed griffin. Golden mane, sharp talons, crescent beaks, and a predator’s aura. Following the griffin is a flock of other normal griffins. Respecting their lion features, I might as well call it a pride instead of a flock.

“MEN!” The giant screams at the top of his lungs. “PREPARE FOR BATTLE!"
