In a small but elegant cafe somewhere downtown in Atlas City, two young beautiful women were busy chatting while enjoying a large cup of ice cream.

On one side was a cheerful lady around the age of twenty with shiny silver hair that cascaded down to her waist. She possessed deep purplish eyes and a temperament that attracted quite a few gazes from other male customers.

She was holding a phone with a bunny cover in one hand and a large spoon in the other, occasionally digging into the ice cream to take a bite before rambling to her friend.

On the other side was a slightly younger-looking woman with straight, dark brown hair tied back into a high ponytail while two bangs fell down beside her face. Her eyes shined in a bright hazel color and a small mole could be found beneath her left eye.

At this moment, she was looking absentmindedly ahead, only nodding every now and then to not irritate her friend.

“He must be kidding!”

A surprised shout pulled her back to reality, making her raise an eyebrow in confusion.

“What’s wrong?”

“No, I mean, Henry just texted me. It seems like Milo is back in the city.” The girl, Celia, narrowed her purple eyes and glanced carefully at her friend. However, seeing the other’s indifferent expression, she became confused.

“...You’re not surprised?”

Looking up, the dark-haired woman shook her head.

“I figured he would come. It seems like he just arrived and went immediately to your boyfriend for help.”

“Sera, we actually got engaged a while back. I told you that before.”

“...Right.”

Seeing her friend putting on an embarrassed expression, Cera only shook her head. She noticed for a while now that Sera was more and more lost in thoughts, completely ignoring her surroundings. It’s the first time she’s seen her friend like that, making her worried.

“Say, does this have something to do with the other guy who looks like Milo?” Cera asked quietly. Although she hasn’t seen the demon for several years, she still can recognize the features that belong to that mischievous brat.

Sera, though, chose to dig into the ice cream instead of answering. It was clear she was avoiding the question. However, Celia didn’t want to give up this easily.

“I’m serious, Sera. I don’t know what’s going on but that human Milo replica gives me a bad feeling. It’s better to stay away from that guy.” Celia said.

Yet, her friend just laughed it off. “Milo is always giving me a bad feeling, what difference does it make if there are two of them?”

Celia didn’t say anything. She simply stared at Sera for a while before putting her phone away and finishing the leftovers in the cup.

In her thoughts, however, she thought differently.

‘Then why are you here, playing human?’

………………..

On the other side of the city, Milo was currently sitting on the roof of a large skyscraper as he looked through the student records Henry sent him not long ago.

It was a large file with more than 1400 students that joined the academy this year. Truth be told, Milo was really thankful for having a friend like Henry. He probably asked some of his sources to hack into the academy database for getting this information.

However, the fact that all of them had a detailed report made him chuckle in a depreciating manner.

Looking through the first fifty or so was still bearable. It was certainly boring but he told himself it was for a greater cause and kept going.

As for now, he was currently past the first hundred and started using the painting tool on his tablet to draw weird faces on their profile pictures. The young demon was clearly enjoying himself until the first student caught his interest.

Milo Hayes.

His ‘counterpart’.

Truth be told, it wasn’t the first time he looked at this report. It’s been quite a while but he still can recognize it clearly. Perfect grades in all subjects and countless accomplishments in the remarks section.

His expression in the picture was relaxed and friendly, easy to mistake for kindness. Seeing this manipulating side, he thought of an old memory.

It was from years ago when he met his adopted mother at the end of the Abyss in that rundown ghost town.

She introduced herself as Lilith, an archdemon of Lust.

He didn’t know what he should think at first. For the first couple of months, he just trotted after her, afraid to be abandoned.

She took him under her wing and taught him how to survive in the Underworld. This included important knowledge and valuable skills but also something he never expected to hear in a place like that - ethics.

It was crazy.

That woman, Lilith, never wanted him to be strong.

Instead, she wanted him to be empathetic and understanding, a weakness he thought was lethal in such a cruel world.

The young him thought it was stupid.

Yet, he complied with her wishes.

He followed what he was told and took every lesson to heart.

In the end, it may have been his salvation…as well as a curse.

Although he awakened empathy in a place of misery and darkness, he never was strong enough to protect himself. He didn’t have to fear anything while traveling around with Lilith who appeared to be stronger than everyone else, but there was something he was missing as a demon.

But he also didn’t want to change. Whenever it came to training or improving himself, he never put in more effort than the bare minimum.

He simply didn’t care.

It was probably one of the reasons he became the failure he was today but if he could go back, he wouldn’t change a thing.

Chuckling slightly, the demon drew some angry, thick eyebrows on his counterpart’s face before moving on to the next student.

It didn’t take long until he stopped on another profile that seemed important.

No.

To be precise, this particular individual’s involvement was crucial for his plan.

Kalen Weyard.

An aspiring mage with average talent and a more questionable personality. As a member of the Spirit Tower, he joined at the same time as his counterpart and they used to be best friends.

Well, at least until their different potential pulled them apart.

However, Milo was sure the other him never considered him to be a friend in the first place. For that guy, people were either expendable pawns or possible threats.

Kalen turned out to be neither.

A weed growing on the roadside at the very best.

Milo, though, was thankful for that. After all, his counterpart would never put his guard up against someone he thought would never be able to stand up against him.

The only problem was how he could rope him in.

Kalen was a student at Gaia, and so was his counterpart. That means that the academy would be the main stage for the conspiracy.

By using Kalen, he could infiltrate the academy, maybe recruit more members if necessary, and try to take the first measures against the human Milo.

Based on his dreams, a sinner like his counterpart deserved death.

That was what he was going for and not anything less.

Plus, he surely would get more recognition by finishing off a threat like him. Maybe his demonic power will even skyrocket as a reward from the cosmic laws.

Grinning foolishly, the demon drew a shining, golden crown on Kalen’s head and memorized his information and report perfectly. Then, he stood up and leaned against the railing, casually skipping over the rest of the profiles.

There were some interesting students here and there but the majority of them were unimportant. Besides the target and main actor, he put down some reminders for a couple of students that may be useful.

However, he was already satisfied with what he got.

The only thing that bugged him out was the profiles of two suspicious individuals that clearly didn’t fit into the category of newcomers. It was that of a senior student while the other was a transfer.

His expression distorted as he looked over them, even showing traces of panic and confusion.

The senior student was a silver-haired girl who specialized in elemental wind magic. However, Milo knew that this was crap.

This student, Celia Park, was his friend Henry’s fiance, as well as a nymph. Due to her nature of learning magic naturally, she had nothing to do at the academy.

However, what caused his shock was the second profile that entered his sight, the transfer student.

“...What is she doing here?”

It was someone he knew.

She looked a little bit different but he was sure it was her. Moreover, she was someone he hoped not to meet.

‘She isn’t here to bring me back, is she?’ His thoughts stirred away as his eyes looked over the name.

Sera Ambrose.

Her appearance and name made it obvious that she didn’t want to stay hidden. At least not from him. However, why would she do something like this?

‘Did she already meet the human Milo?’

The thought couldn’t help but cross his mind as he sighed deeply. Still, it might not be a bad thing as long as he played his cards right.

“I guess we’re meeting again sooner than expected, huh”, the young demon mumbled as he drew majestic, white wings behind her back.
