The Leaf and the Stone were not the only things Jonathan was keeping track of periodically. Jonathan had marks in three out of the five great nations. One of which was the Land of Wind.
Jonathan specifically placed a mark on Gaara, the fourth Kazekage's son. This was because Gaara was a jinchūriki. Jonathan would monitor him from time-to-time because there was a certain event he desired to witness. Not just witness either but acquire something quite valuable.
When the time finally came, Jonathan ventured to the Sand Village and waited until night fell. When saying Jonathan was watching Gaara, he was truly watching everyone around him as well. He knew this part of the original timeline quite well. This was the day Gaara was going to run berserk in the Sand.
From what Jonathan recalled, Yashamaru, Gaara's uncle, was given a mission to psychologically test Gaara to see if he could tame the Shukaku. Jonathan felt this idea was more than abnormal. It was ridiculous. Jonathan had been a mature man whose heart was incorruptible by Kokuō's devilish influence. But Gaara, was just a boy. How could they expect a toddler who couldn't even tie his own shoe to be capable of wielding the power of a monstrous creature?
But their hope wasn't in vain. Gaara would eventually become capable. Granted, at the loss of his pure, loving sanity.
Jonathan teleported to the Sand and disguised himself as none other than Yashamaru. There was a reason he chose him. Yashamaru had entered the Sand Council early due to Gōza's death. He was an intelligent shinobi, but not intelligent enough to know that psychologically impairing a child's mind would lead to his untimely, suicidal death.
When Jonathan arrived, it was already night time. The order from Rasa, the Kazekage, had already been given. Jonathan knew this because he had been watching things. From a far, Jonathan watched as the real Yashamaru wrapped his face so Gaara wouldn't recognize him when attacking the boy. Jonathan felt teleported to Gaara afterwards.
"Huh? Who's there?" Gaara asked while turning around. He hadn't seen anyone. The instant, Jonathan arrived, he ran. For Gaara to have at least felt his presence did show his potential, however. Jonathan did not like Gaara's character. He was a child that was abused in several different ways. Only when Gaara became his sociopath self did Jonathan find him a little amusing. This was why Jonathan wasn't going to stop Yashamaru from changing Gaara from within.
Jonathan found a far enough area before Rasa could use his technique to spy on Gaara. While waiting for Yashamaru's arrival, Jonathan used his sensing ability to try and locate Rasa. A few minutes had passed till Jonathan found his position. Just as he did, he heard bones being crushed. Jonathan knew what scene was about to come. Instead of intervening in Yashamaru's mission, Jonathan made his way to where Rasa was.
When he found Rasa, he was still using his eye of sand technique. This technique allowed Rasa (and Gaara) to view other things from a third eye. This eye was currently watching Gaara and Yashamaru's location.
'As long as Gaara can control his rage, he'll be a worthy jinchūriki. Gōza, if you were alive to see this, I'd commend you for pushing things,' Rasa inwardly said.
"Those two are having a touching reunion, don't you think?" Rasa turned around in alarm. When he did, he saw Yashamaru sitting by the edge of a roof looking in the direction Gaara was. "What?" Rasa stunnedly asked. "But… you can't be—"
"Can't be what?" Jonathan asked with a smile while turning his head towards Rasa. "Who are you?" Rasa demanded. 'He's not bad at keeping his demeanor,' Jonathan thought. Gently standing up, Jonathan crossed his arms asking, "Are you blind?"
Jonathan closed his eyes before opening them while pointing at his chest, "…I'm Yashamaru."
There was a moment of silence. 'Is it really him? No… He's with Gaara right now. Unless this is a sand clone,' Rasa thought. Jonathan deduced what Rasa was likely thinking. "It looks like we'll be able to see if Gaara's able to become the ultimate weapon, lord fourth." Rasa couldn't help but continue staring at Jonathan until a loud noise was heard.
Boom!
Rasa looked with his sand eye. Gaara was piercing his forehead. In the blink of an eye, he then fully transformed into Shukaku. "No, he failed," Rasa said disappointingly. "Yashamaru, gather the village eld—urgh!" When Rasa looked down, a sword was sticking through him.
