NINE MONTHS LATER
For Jonathan, nine months felt like years. He lived day by day being addressed by a name he could barely tolerate. If it wasn't for the strong sense of security within the orphanage, Jonathan would have long left by now. But there was a reason he stayed.
Exactly one month from now, Obito Uchiha, disguised as a masked man, would infiltrate the Leaf Village with the nine-tails. Naruto's birthday was also on that same day. Being a former Naruto follower, Jonathan knew very well the important dates and times certain events would occur. Something like that nine-tails massacre being linked to Naruto's birthday just made it too easy for him to remember.
'October tenth,' Jonathan thought while sitting in Nonō's office. 'The day the story's main character is born.'
Jonathan hated Naruto. Not just the character but the series as a whole. No amount of interviews he listened in on or forum posts he read from bon-a-fide fans changed how he felt about the story. The birth of the main character didn't interest Jonathan. It was what was going to happen on that night that Jonathan would take to reach a pivotal step towards his goals.
In these last nine months, Jonathan had used his time well. He was not like Naruto Uzumaki, who didn't even know what chakra was until the tenth episode. He had practiced all twelve hand seals in secret, focused on his chakra control and even tried perfecting his newly learned techniques. Jonathan's own physical strength became a lot refined due him having unlocked chakra.
There were times that Kabuto would try and spy on Jonathan but he was always one step ahead. At one point, Kabuto even came in. Jonathan, showing no signs of empathy, dismissed him harshly. After that one attempt, Kabuto felt heartbroken and stopped coming by. This was advantageous to Jonathan because he could focus on more advanced chakra control like walking on walls.
But Jonathan's privacy was only a luxury. At random moments, an orphan would come to check on what Jonathan was doing. To his much displeasure. Even staff members like Nonō would often times check to make sure Jonathan was alright.
He spent almost every day in Nonō's office which made everyone believe he truly enjoyed reading. So much so, that Nonō herself even used her money to buy more books from the Leaf Village for Jonathan. This sacrificial act didn't go unnoticed to Jonathan or the staff because the orphanage was suffering from financial trouble. They truly believed Jonathan to be a special child. Not because of his reading capabilities (which he was unafraid to show), but also his performance when performing medical ninjutsu. Even though Jonathan tried to hide this, it was inevitable that someone as quick witted as Nonō would discover Jonathan's potential.
But Jonathan wasn't a fool. He'd purposely make mistakes and asked questions even though he knew the answers. At times, he'd even let Kabuto overshadow him.
Chakra was truly undervalued by most of the people in this world. Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, who blessed people with it, made a grave mistake. An ability like this allowed Jonathan to not only advance his own physical attributes quicker but also his mental faculties. Because Jonathan now had chakra, he could augment his senses on levels far above even the most skilled men from earth. Training under a renown medical ninja only furthered Jonathan's control over it. But Jonathan wasn't talented. It took him several weeks to perfect his cloning technique. It took him even longer to perfect the healing jutsu. Months to be exact. Had he remembered the correct hand seals for the transformation technique, he would have gladly practiced it. But even Jonathan had limits as to how much techniques he could remember.
He tried to use chakra on the part of his brain that stored memory (the hippocampus), but it proved to no avail. Chakra was powerful, yes, but it wasn't omnipotent. There were limits to what Jonathan could do.
He would often tire out during most of his training. Though he knew a lot of useful techniques that lower leveled ninja could perform with ease, he didn't have enough chakra to do so. Just practicing basic jutsu like the teleportation technique used up an excessive amount of Jonathan's chakra.
Only on days when Jonathan was sure no one was going to come in abruptly, did he try and practice new techniques. All the medical books Nonō purchased played a crucial role. Back on earth, Jonathan was never a big fan of medical ninjutsu. He hardly knew anything about it save the main characters who were proficient in it. And because things like instant regeneration existed, Jonathan hadn't valued it.
Now was different. Jonathan, because of training under Nonō, had effectively known how to control his chakra in precise locations of his body. This means of manipulating his chakra allowed him to learn new ninjutsu such as poison extraction jutsu and chakra dissection blade. Though they weren't perfect or efficient if a Jōnin were to use them, they were manageable to some extent.
There were a lot of things that Jonathan knew, but he hadn't had the right equipment yet; that or, it wasn't the right time. For instance, Jonathan knew how to perform the summoning seal. But before its retcon in Boruto, the user of the technique would be transported to the land they had the most affinity towards. Jonathan wasn't going to risk being transported into somewhere he wasn't ready to enter. Even if it didn't work and this world's rules were different, he wasn't going to take that chance.
The only thing Jonathan desired was to know what his main elemental chakra nature was before the day the nine-tails would appear.
