Genjutsu in this world was like hypnosis on earth. It could be used to influence their target, cause pain or more. The complex nature of illusion techniques varied based off one's chakra control. What's more is the sharingan. It's powerful ocular prowess not only can cast strong genjutsu on its target, it can tell when someone is under the influence of genjutsu based off that person's irregular chakra flow.

The reason that Jonathan placed both Ayame and Teuchi under genjutsu was because Jonathan needed a place of residency.

There were a list of people to choose from, but most citizens in the Leaf had not met Jonathan's expectation. Rather, he hadn't remembered a lot of people's backgrounds from fillers. Teuchi was the proud owner of a reputable ramen shop. That alone meant he generated a high amount of income. Enough to satisfy what Jonathan needed to purchase while he would reside in the Leaf.

Had Jonathan spent time searching for people of nobility, he'd be taking the chance of being noticed by others. What Jonathan had was information. He knew of Teuchi and his only daughter. As well as what connections they had to the more memorable main characters. Regardless of how strong a shinobi was, only a select few, like the Uchiha could tell whether someone was under a genjutsu. And who would check? Shinobi who came to Ichiraku Ramen weren't there for business. They were there to eat.

Jonathan had only used a small amount of his chakra to place both father and daughter under the influence of the illusion technique. And because neither of them had control over chakra, they were far more susceptible. At best, Jonathan speculated they would be trapped under his illusion for the next three days before he had to cast it again.

The illusion was simple. Teuchi and Ayame's memories were altered, believing that Jonathan is part of their family. Not only that, Jonathan made sure to feed the illusive suggestion of not revealing to others of Jonathan's existence. To them, Jonathan was a well-behaved son that was helping the family. So long as they didn't talk about Jonathan or asked him any questions, they could live happy forever.

There are several ways for someone to break Jonathan's illusion. Approximately eight from what he could remember. Out of those eight, only one of them Jonathan needed to prepare for.  It was Ayame or Teuchi getting hurt. If a target under an illusion technique gets caused pain, the technique might get cancelled. The severity of the pain varies. Jonathan hadn't used just any regular illusion technique. He used the sharingan's genjutsu. This technique was so influential that the strongest tailed beast fell prey to it.

Jonathan had more than ten months of planning while he was in the orphanage. He chose his targets carefully. As long as he remained hidden from both regular citizens and ninjas, he could grow without hinderances. Now with a place to hide and people to help sustain his necessities, he had little to no obstructions. But that didn't mean he was safe.

Hiruzen Sarutobi, the third Hokage who would resume his position after the fourth Hokage died, had a crystal ball that could be used to spy on people. Its purpose was to ensure order within the village. As long as the third Hokage didn't familiarize himself with Jonathan's chakra, he couldn't spy on him per say. It was those he did know that Jonathan would have to avoid. However many times throughout the day and night Hiruzen used that technique was unspecified. No matter what, though, the chances of Jonathan being spotted by him was less than three percent. Hiruzen was an old man who had once retired. So long as things looked peaceful in the village, Hiruzen's senses would stay dull.

And as for Ayame, Jonathan had no other choice but to place her under an illusion. If he slayed her now, Teuchi himself as well as the neighbourhood, would be under surveillance.

Jonathan was not eager to kill nor was he a sociopath; rather, he was keen to what he was doing.
