Chapter 25

this is a fictional story by realTensai

Finally, the time had come. We arrived in the land of scientists. Our ship had already docked at the shore and one passenger after the other left the ship. Jane and I were in the middle. With a firm step, we entered the land. Now we had arrived.

First, I looked around a little. The first thing I noticed was that this port was much more modern than any other port in this world. Magnificent hotels that soared high into the sky surrounded us. All kinds of stores were spread out on the streets. Means of transportation used the streets that could only be cars.

However, upon closer inspection, I realized these cars were flying just above the ground and thus were not normal cars. These cars were most likely better than the ones in my world. I never thought that the technology in this world could be better than in mine. Since this world already had magic and all the cities I had been in so far had felt rather old-fashioned, subconsciously it was already becoming a fact for me that my world was more advanced. I guess I was wrong about that.

“You’re surprised, aren’t you?” asked Jane, who had seen me look around in amazement.

“It’s just impressive,” I answered honestly.

“If that impresses you already, Utopia will blow your mind,” Jane spoke, sounding a little proud.

Utopia was the capital of this country and our actual destination. In Utopia lived the council that administered this country. And in this council was the person who was responsible for my being here. I knew Utopia was the most advanced city in the world, and Jane’s comment only reinforced that. Even if I didn’t have a goal in Utopia, I would have wanted to visit it because of curiosity. No wonder there were so many tourists here.

“How are we going to get to Utopia now?” I asked. I wanted to be in Utopia as soon as possible. The faster I get there, the faster I could get back to my world. It shouldn’t take long to get to Utopia, but we should still hurry. However, Jane just shook her head.

“Before we go to Utopia, we must first change our money. They use a different currency here,” she claimed.

A different currency? I’ve never heard of that before. It was also the first time Jane had mentioned it. I thought the only currency in this world was coins, but I was wrong again. Though when you thought about it, it also made sense that the most advanced country in the world did not use coins as currency. Most likely, they use paper money.

“Where can we do this?” I asked, with no other choice. Of course, I wanted to arrive as quickly as possible, however, we wouldn’t get far without the right money. We should just do it as quickly as we could.

“There’s a bank right here. Follow me!”

Following Jane, we made our way to the bank. The way was not far, as I could already see the bank. We crossed the modern streets and reached our destination. Arrived, we saw several counters to change money. However, there was a line at each. We queued up in the shortest one and started waiting.

“Is the Land of scientists the only country that uses a different currency?” I asked Jane, somewhat interested.

“It is the only country that has been able to successfully introduce a new currency. Other countries have tried, yet all failed. Only the Land of scientists could establish a stable new currency that could even compete with the coin currency.”

“What exactly do you mean by compete? Does it mean that other countries are now using this country’s currency?”

“That’s more or less how it is. After the introduction of the new currency, the Republic accepted only their new currency in trade. Thus, they indirectly forced other countries to accept and use their currency. Weaker and not-so-stable countries changed their currency completely and you could even say that in this way they unconsciously made themselves dependent on the Republic. Through this method, the new currency spreads all over the world and it is only a matter of time before it is everywhere,” Jane explained plausibly.

It makes sense. Since the country of scientists is the country with the largest and most successful trade in this world, other countries have to adapt. And the moment another country has completely adopted the currency, they have become dependent.

With this currency, they can only trade with the Republic or with countries of the same currency. Of course, they could exchange their currency the moment they trade with a country that uses coins, but in the long run, it would lead to two currencies in one country, which is not good at all.

But how can it be that I have never seen the currency? Even if Durania uses the coin currency, with the influence of the new currency, I should have at least heard of it.

“How can it be that I have never heard of this currency in Durania? Could it be that Durania doesn’t do much trade with the Republic?” I asked.

The only explanation that I have never seen this currency, let alone heard of it, is that Durania does not do much trade with the Republic. If they don’t, the currency automatically doesn’t have much impact on the country either. Durania is a major power that I would trust to do something like this.

After I asked my question, Jane made a somewhat complicated facial expression. It seemed like I had asked a problematic question.

“How can I say it? It’s a bit complicated to explain, but you’re right. Durania has almost no trade with the land of scientists. The reason for this is Durania’s close connection with the mage country of Magos. Explaining everything to you now would be too exhausting, but just remember that Magos and the Land of scientists are something like enemies. It’s a long story, but mages and scientists usually can’t stand each other to death,” Jane explained, a bit fidgety.

Her answer only left me with more questions. Why are mages at enmity with scientists? What does this enmity have to do with Durania? Why is it a long story? Countless such questions buzzed through my head, but the line in front of us disappeared, meaning it was now our turn. I guess I had to wait for my questions until another time.

“How can I help you?” the man at the counter asked us.

Jane took out her purse, and I did the same. She then placed her purse on the table and spoke, “There are 50 silver coins in here. I would like to change them into cosmos. Damion, take out 50 silver coins and have them changed.”

I did as I was told and took out my money to get it changed into cosmos. Not hesitating for long, the man started changing the money. As expected, the currency cosmos was paper money. He took out a lot and then put them together to make two stacks. The money had the color of the universe, but in the upper right corner, there was a number. This number must have been the value, which was 500 on the bills I saw.

“One silver coin is 100 cosmos. That means for 50 silver coins you get 5000 cosmos each,” the man explained. That means one cosmo is worth about as much as one euro since one silver coin is equal to about 100 euros by my estimate.

“Do you already have a card or do you need a new one?” the man asked us.

“What kind of card?” I immediately replied ignorantly.

“A card to keep the money. With your question, I conclude you don’t have one, so I will explain it to you and give you one right away. A card is used to store the money there. So you don’t always have to carry all your money with you,” he explained politely.

So it’s kind of like a bank card.

“They work with cosmo energy. Wait a minute, I’ll show you.”

He took a card that also had universe color, but had a rune on it. He then placed the money on the card and did something that could only be cosmo energy insertion. Immediately after that, the money disappeared into the card and the card showed the number 5000. However, this number disappeared again after a few seconds.

Amazing! Completely fascinated, I looked at the card.

“This card is now loaded with 5000 cosmos. All the stores have devices that can take the money from the card when you pay. That means you can now use the card to pay anywhere with no problems. If you want to load more money, you just need to put money on the card and then insert cosmo energy. If you want to withdraw money, you have to go back to the bank. Ah, if you can’t release your cosmo energy, that’s no problem, of course. Just come to the bank and they will load your money onto the card for you. Are there questions?”

The man explained the function of the cards quickly but understandably. Though maybe I understood it immediately because the bank cards in my world worked almost the same way. This country amazes me more and more. Almost identical systems were here, only here they were even better than in my world. What amazing inventions will I still discover?

We gratefully accepted the offer of the card and took them with us. I would have thought that Jane already had one, but to my surprise, she did not. The man warned us once again not to lose the card, after which we left the bank.

“This country really is amazing. Other countries use coins to pay, but here you can use a rune-driven card. The difference in development is gigantic,” I spoke enthusiastically.

Jane just nodded before she spoke.

“It really is. The land has developed again after I left it. The cards were still limited in my day because the runes took a long time to produce, but now I guess they made enough that everyone had one.”

Ah, that’s right. Rune production was difficult after all. That reminds me of something quite specific, though.

“Jane, what about the pirates’ cosmo weapons, by the way? We should be able to find something out here,” I said seriously.

I still hadn’t forgotten the subject. If Jane’s suspicions were correct, the council had a lot of dirt on them. Jane also became serious at the mention of this topic.

“I’ve already done some research on Meteorite Island. Still, I can only confirm it when we get to Utopia.”

So Jane now had her own task in Utopia. I guess it was time to finally go there.

“We will take a cab to Utopia. That should take about half an hour,” Jane spoke.

Since there were cabs everywhere, we immediately found one that would take us to Utopia. We got into the flying car, which was actually called the cosmomobile. The ride took a little more than half an hour, but we arrived.

I had reached my destination. I was in Utopia!
