Just as Edward was about to surrender control to Fenrir, the door of the inn lobby swung open followed by one of the city guard entering the inn.
“Who is making all the ruckus in here? Don’t you know fighting is not allowed inside the city?”
Seeing the guard, Edward stopped his going through with his transformation and the adventurer snorted before walking towards the exit. As he reached besides the door, he turned back and said: “Tomorrow I’m expecting to receive my money. If not, you know what will happen.” He then looked at Edward and said: “As for you animal fucker… you should hope we don’t meet each other again.” he let his words trail off as he walked past the guard.
Edward lifted himself from the ground with difficulty and wiped the blood from the corner of his lips. As he looked at the door, he noticed that the guard surprisingly also left.
‘He indeed appears to have so serious backing… Edward thought as he shook his head before slowly making his way towards the innkeeper girl that also managed to lift herself up from the ground.
“Are you all right?” asked Edward when he saw that her eyes were slightly wet at the corners.
The girl nodded without saying a single word, but one would still be able to see her hands, legs and even tail shaking slightly. Edward let out a sigh and said: “Can you tell me more about who that guy is?”
The girl bit her lower lip and replied: “He’s part of the Swarm, a band of adventurers who make a living out of requesting protection money from all small businesses in the city. If one does not pay their protection money, they’ll come and keep trashing your business until you don’t have any choice but to do it.”
“Why won’t the guards do anything about them?” asked Edward, finding the fact that the guard left right after seeing that adventurer and didn’t say anything else quite strange.
The girl shook her head in answer.
“How much do you owe them?”
“Twenty silvers..”
Edward nodded and picked his key from the key counter before making his way upstairs without saying another word. Coming back down, he handed the key and twenty silvers to the girl and said: “Take it.”
The girl quickly pushed the coins back to him and shook her head: “I can’t, customer, don’t worry I’ll manage to figure something out.”
“Just think of it as me renting the room for forty days. I don’t plan to change inns anytime soon.” Replied Edward as he let the silver on the counter and turned to leave.
“Thank you.” He heard a soft mutter from behind him just as he was walking away.
As Edward reached the marketplace, he was saddened that the man he wanted to buy his underwear from was not there yet.
‘I guess I’ll just have to ask master to let me leave the guild at noon so I can pick up my clothes.’ Thought Edward as he sighed and started making his way towards the guild before the sun would rise up so Circe won’t have to yell at him once more.
As he passed through the guild’s gate, he saw Circe already waiting for him with an impatient look on her face.
“Good morning, master.” Said Edward, being careful to maintain his etiquette.
Circe nodded and was about to turn around when she happened to see the small swelling on one of Edward’s cheeks, raising one of her eyebrows, she asked: “What happened to you? Did you get into a bar fight or something?”
Edward put a wry smile on his face and said: “You know master, being the hero I always was, this morning when I happened to spot a damsel in distress being bullied by an evil guy, I had to fight to protect her. Sadly, that evil guy was too strong and he ended up defeating me. That’s why you have to teach me magic so I can grow stronger and have my revenge.”
A crisp laughter escaped Circe’s lips as she started walking towards the magic tower.
“If you’re fine enough to joke around, I’ll not bother asking anymore.” She said with her back turned towards Edward as they were making their way inside the tower.
“But master, I’m not joking. That exactly what happened… By the way, have you heard of a group called Swarm?”
Circe stopped, turned and gave his swollen face one more look before saying: “I see. I know about them, but it’s better if you don’t get involved in their business anymore. They are part of the city underground guilds.”
“Underground guild?” asked Edward with a curious expression. ‘Are they some kind of mafia or stuff?’
Circe nodded and continued walking. “Yes, the city looks quiet and peaceful on the surface, but there are quite a lot of underground guilds hidden inside it. The Swarm is part of the Thieves Guild and it’s strength is not by any means low. Everyone is aware of these guilds taking root in the city, but since they pay tribute a part of their earnings to the city lord, they have quite a lot of free reign..”
Edward nodded with a pensive look. ‘It seems that no place is free of political corruption…’
As they reached the study, Circe didn’t stop and continued walking upwards.
“Master, wait. Can I go to the marketplace at noon to buy some change of clothes? I just came to the city recently and don’t really have that many.”

Circe nodded and said as she continued heading up the stairs: “If you are in need of any money, just let me know and I’ll lend you some. You can pay me back once you start taking on quests.”
Edward smiled and thanked Circe before entering the study. Stepping inside, he sat down on the sofa and started reading through <Introduction to Magic for beginners> once more, this time just focusing on reading as fast as possible so the water spirit could memorize it by the end of the day.
[I think it should be noon already.] Fenrir’s voice stopped Edward from his reading and he walked out of the magician guild. Once he reached the market, he found the man who he tasked with making him underwear in the same place as last time.
Walking up to his stall, the man also recognized Edward.
“I thought you weren’t going to come anymore.” Said the man as he didn’t waste any time and presented the newly sewn underwear. After paying for it, Edward looked around to see if there was anything else of interest but not finding anything he liked, he just thanked the man and returned to the magician guild, now willing to waste any more time.
As he reached Circe’s magic tower, he got at the entrance and was suddenly stomped. He forgot that he needed to use magic to open the door from the outside. Since he was still relatively new here and didn’t really know about the place, he didn’t want to yell for his master like a madman and just decided to wait at the base of the tower, thinking that maybe Circe will remember him going out and let him back inside.
He waited for an entire hour until the tower opened and Circe walked outside.
“I got a little caught up with an experiment and didn’t have the time to come and open the door for you. You need to hurry and learn how to use magic so I can lend you a key to the tower.” After saying her piece, she didn’t wait for Edward to answer and made way back inside.
Edward quickly followed after her and return to reading his book in peace and quiet. By the time he finished reading the first book, it was already dark outside.
<One week later.>
His entire week went on pretty much the same way, with him washing at the inn in the morning, reading the books during the day and spending the night memorizing everything while the wolf roamed free through the mountain and forest around the city.
As his deadline to finish memorizing the books came, he could say that he was finally successful. He hasn’t tried using magic yet, since Circe said that he shouldn’t but he had a small feeling that he could do it if he tried.
On the day of the deadline, Circe brought them both at a floor Edward has never been in before. Looking at the simple round room he was in now, he didn’t get to chance to ask as Circe answered before he could: “This is the magic combat room or magic practice room. Every tower has one of these rooms and it’s purpose is to allow a mage to cast his spells in peace without the risk of destroying the environment. This room is made out of mana absorbing materials and can resist any basic spell completely and nullify about 50% of the damage cause by an intermediate spell.”
Edward nodded and looked at Circe in excitement and impatience. Circe smiled and nodded before taking a few steps back.
Seeing that he was alone in the center of the room, Edward took a deep breath and, closing his eyes, started going through everything he learned in the past week.
‘Imagination, Ethan. Casting spells is using mana to give form to your imagination… Focus… Feel the mana…. Let it out of your body…. Turn it into water… Give it form…’
As a clear image of a small water ball appeared in his mind, a soft whisper sounded in his ears ‘Water is life given form, you are the life and I’m it’s form..’ As the voice ended, the mark on the back of his left hand started feeling slightly cold and Edward lifted that hand up in instinct. Slowly water seeped out of the pores of his hand and took the form of a small ball just a few inches above it.
Edward could already feel the small ball of water like it was an extension of his body and opened his eyes to look at it.
“I did it!!” he yelled in excitement, but this broke his concentration and the ball of water lost form, dropping to the floor.
“Oops!” said Edward as he scratched his head in embarrassment, but his excitement didn’t diminish in the least.
A small clapping sound came from the back, drawing closer, followed by Circe’s voice: “Not bad for your first try. A perfect water aptitude is something else indeed..”
Edward could notice a trace of envy hidden behind the smile on Circe’s face, but he didn’t mind it as he bowed and said in a rare honest tone: “Thank you, master.”
Circe nodded and said: “I didn’t do anything and you’ve just started on the road of being a mage. I want you to stay here and keep practicing until you’re able to launch that ball of water straight at that target.”, by the end of her words, she pointed at a small target 30 feet away.
Edward nodded and started focusing once more. This time, the ball managed to float for a few inches away before losing it’s form once more and falling to the ground with a splat. After practicing around ten more times, as he managed to make the ball float two feet away from his body, he started feeling drowsy.
“What is going on?” muttered Edward as he looked at his shaking hand.
“You’re out of mana.” Replied Circe with a smile. “Your mana will recover by itself, but sleeping would increase your recovery speed. Fourteen water balls in not bad for a level one who never practiced magic before in his life. Go and rest to recover. Once you are done, you can back to this floor and practice once more.”
“Master, is it all right if I go out and practice casting in the forest? I should not bother anyone there.” asked Edward since he couldn’t really sleep here to recover and walking back from the forest every time seemed like pain.
Circe didn’t ask, already used to Edward’s habit of not wishing to sleep at the guild and said: “All right. I’ll already registered your mana with the tower and, once you manage to hit a target 30 feet away with decent accuracy, come back and use your mana on the tower, then entrance will open by itself once coming in contact with your mana.”
Edward nodded in understanding and left the tower before heading into the forest once more. He was quite excited to recover his mana before practicing magic some more.*-
