Reaching the place he left Minx, the wolf got closer to him and started licking one of his hands.

“Good girl. Did you miss me?”

Hearing the wolf letting out a small whimper, Edward smiled and laid down at the base of a nearby tree.

“I’m going to let you play with your big brother. Make sure he doesn’t cause any trouble.” Said Edward as he closed he eyes and went to sleep to recover his mana.

Waking up inside his mind, he looked at the fish slowly floating and asked: “Azure, was that your voice I heard when I cast the spell?”

“Yes, Edward. I was the one converting your mana into water. You did good, but ignore the distance of control for now and start practicing freely moving the water around your body.”

Edward was about to say something when he felt the world around his shift and he opened his eyes back in the real world.

“Fenrir, what happened? I was barely out for five minutes.” Asked Edward as he lifted his arm and looked at the bite mark.

[Interesting, it appears we learned a new thing about how the curse works on a human.]

“What do you mean? Can’t you get straight to the point already?”

[The wolf’s devouring ability recharged your body’s mana and, since it’s still quite early and you are not tired, you woke up almost immediately as soon as your mana recovered.]

“So I can use the wolf to quickly recharge my mana?” asked Edward with excitement. This meant that he wouldn’t have to waste that much time on recovering his mana and could practice more.

[That appears to be the case. We’ll have to see if the same situation repeats itself in the future to be 100% sure.]

“Great.” Said Edward as he patted Minx’s head. “Sorry girl, it appears you’ll be spending the day with me instead. Look at this great trick I learned today.”

As his words ended, Edward focused and formed a water ball inside the palm of his left hand. He gently started moving the ball of water around his body, performing what looked like a circus performance. Every time he lost control of a ball of water and it fell to the ground, Edward will simply cast another one and try again from the start.

As he kept practicing, he started feeling drowsy once more and immediately went to sleep to recover his mana.

“Azure, how is it?” asked Edward as soon as he woke up inside his mind, fearing that he would return to the real world before he had the chance to speak with her.

“You’re indeed slowly getting better. Once you manage to keep the spell active while rotating it around your body for 30 minutes, I’ll give you a new exercise to practice.”

Edward nodded and it wasn’t long before it happened again and he returned to the real world. Ignoring the blood covering his body, he stopped Minx from licking it since it was pointless and started practicing once more.

Edward continued his routing of using his entire mana on practice before going for a quick nap to recover and start practicing once more for two days straight. His naps in between to recover helped with his need for sleep and he spend the nights practicing as well.

Two days later, Edward could be seen dancing around the mountain forest with a ball of water circling around his body.

“I think that should be 30 minutes. What do you say Fenrir?” asked Edward as he stopped moving but kept the ball of water active.

[Azure said it’s fine. Now it’s time for the second exercise. Try using two balls of water at the same time.]

“That doesn’t sound that hard…” muttered Edward as he nodded and summoned another ball of water, but as soon as he started moving it, the former ball, which he managed to keep active for 30 minutes with ease, lost form and splashed onto the ground.

Edward frowned, not really understanding what happened before summoning another ball of water. The same as last time happened. The moment he tried to move one of the balls, the other one will lose form and fall onto the ground.

After a few more fails, he started feeling drowsy and rested at the base of a tree.

“Azure, why does one spell gets canceled the moment I focus on another?”

“Because you need to control both of them at the same time. It’s not easy, but a mage will need to learn to multicast and it’s better if we set up some foundation right from the start.”

“All right. I’ll keep trying. Having two masters to teach me is for sure great.” Replied Edward with a smile and he soon returned to the real world.

He lifted both of his hands and summoned one ball after another before taking a deep breath and willing them both to rotate clockwise. After a few more failed attempts, he managed to do it, but after a few seconds one of them fell to the ground, followed by Edward losing his concentration and dropping the other one as well.

“Fuck, this is hard.” A swear escaped Edward’s lips but he didn’t give up and started once more. It took him an entire day of constant failures until he managed to obtain some degree of success. As he was inside his mind while recovering, Azure said.

“You got the hand of it and will probably succeed after one more day of practice.”

By this time, Edward’s enthusiasm already died down as well and he just nodded to show that he understood. Practice went on for another day until, just as Azure predicted, he managed to move the two balls clockwise around his body without failing for 30 minutes. It was still hard and he didn’t have to get distracted at all or the spells will fail. Now he’s been practicing for four days straight and didn’t even get the chance to return to the city during all this time.

As he canceled the spell and rested to recover his mana, he asked Azure: “How is it? Do I need to practice more?”

“You could, but it’s already time to go to the last exercise of mana control. You will need to form two balls of water and spin them in opposing directions.”

Edward’s eyebrow twitched slightly but he didn’t say anything and just waited to return to the real world. This no longer felt fun to him and he was starting to get bored of doing the same thing over and over again.

Once he woke up in the real world, he pat Minx on her head and stood up. Forming another set of water balls, he tried moving them in opposing directions, but both spells failed before they could move a single inch.

‘Fuck me man, this is torture for God's sake…’ said Edward to himself as he started practicing once more.

It took Edward an entire day until he got the hand of what he should do and was barely able to nudged the balls slightly in opposing directions. Two more days later, he was able to keep the balls’ rotation at a constant speed for 30 minutes straight. Once 30 minutes were over, Fenrir’s voice sounded from Edward’s arm.

[Azure said that’s enough. You should try launching a water ball at a tree and see the result of your training. She said you’ll definitely be surprised.]

Edward was feeling quite exhausted so he just nodded and let one ball fall to the ground before launching the other one towards a tree in the distance, focusing on increasing it’s speed to a maximum.

The water ball rushed from Edward’s palm and hit the tree that was over 60 feet away, making a fist sized hole in it’s trunk. Edward’s mouth hung open as he looked unblinkingly at the scene in front of him and asked: “Did I do that?”

[Congratulations, according to Azure you can now be considered a beginner water mage.]

Edward let his body fall backward with a smile on his face and a sense of fulfillment warming his heart.

“I did it. Hahahaha” he started laughing out loud without a care in the world. He was happy to become an actual mage and to finally be done with all those exercises.

After he had his time to laugh and bask in his sense of fulfillment, he figured it was about time he returned to report his progress to his master. He also wanted to check on the innkeeper and see if anything else happened with those thugs while he was gone.

After resting for a bit to recover his mana, he cleaned his body using his own spells and rode Minx back in the direction of the city. It was around noon when he finally got to the place he hid his clothes almost one week ago.

‘I was getting tired of walking around naked…’ though Edward as he quickly got dressed. Thankfully, there was no rain during all this week or he would have had to wear wet clothes back the city.

Saying his goodbyes to Minx and telling her to be careful, he started heading in the direction of the city.

Edward passed by the inn and after stepping inside, he was relieved to see that the innkeeper appeared to be doing just fine. The girl also smiled once she saw Edward walking up to her and said: “Good to see you after such a long time, customer. I thought you left the city after not passing by here for an entire week. Are you all right?”

“Good to see you too and I’m doing just fine. Have those guys troubled you during this time?” asked Edward to which the girl shook her head and said: “No, thank you for your help the last ime. They haven’t returned since I paid the coins I owed them.”

“Good. I just came to check on you, but I still have a few things to do so I’m going to take my leave. See you tomorrow.” Said Edward and turned around to leave, but was stopped by the girl’s voice from behind him.

“Please wait for a moment, customer.”

Edward didn’t understand why she stopped him and turned around with a curious look. The girl fidgeted with her fingers and blushed slightly before she eventually mustered up her courage and extended a hand while saying: “I’m Violet Glass, nice to meet you.”

Edward smiled at the girl’s awkward introduction who he figured was just an attempt to ask for his name, but didn’t call her on it and just took her delicate hand before replying with a smile: “Edward Black, nice meeting you too, Miss Glass.”

The girl blushed even more before she nodded again and said: “Please call me Violet, everyone else does. I have some work to do so I’ll see you later, Edward.” As her words ended, she ran to the back room like she was being chased by a pack of hungry wolves, but the waggling of her bushy tail as she scurried away betrayed her real feelings.

Edward just shook his head and left the inn with a smile, heading for the magician guild. The guards were already familiar with Edward so they let him pass with a simple respectful bow and he was soon in front of Circe’s magic tower.

He took a deep breath and send a small sized water ball slowly toward the tower. As the ball and the tower came into contact, Edward felt his mana escaping his control and a door opened on the tower wall.

With a bright smile on his face, Edward stepped through the door and headed for the top floors where Circe usually spent her time to let her know that he finally did it, he could finally call himself a water mage, although only a beginner one.

//Author's Note: All the setup for the city and Edward's magic learning took a bit more than I expected, but I wanted to let you know it won't be long now until we get some action. Thank you all for sticking with the story and I wish you a happy Monday.//
