Edward ended up spending the night and half of the next day asleep, both in the real world as well as his mind, and when he finally woke up, he found Minx resting by her side, also asleep.

The scabs on her wounds have fallen off over the time he was asleep and she looked almost completely healed.

Feeing his eyes slightly getting moist, Edward shook his head to clear his mind and said softly: “Thank you.”

Minx also woke up from the movement and softly lifted herself up from the ground before coming close to Edward and licking his face.

“Don’t worry Minx. After leveling up we’ll go and take care of that dumb, angry bird. Also, I’m sorry you had to go through all that because of my stupidity.”

Minx let out a small whimper before giving Edward’s face a few more licks. Edward spent the rest of his day with his wolf before going to sleep at night.

On the morning of the next day, he and Minx continued their hunt of magic beasts with an extra amount of caution. By the end of the day, Edward finally placed his status tablet on the body of his most recent kill and the tablet started to slowly heat up.

It was his last kill and as soon as the tablet came into contact with the kill, Edward’s body started glowing up slightly as a pleasant feeling washed over him. Once the light receded, he decided to check the tablet and check for what differences leveling up brought to him.

“Great, I’ve finally done it.” Said Edward with excitement before pondering for a moment about his next course of action.

“Fenrir, what do you think are my chances if I go exploring a dungeon?”

“I don’t know how dangerous a dungeon really is so I really can’t tell, but I would suggest you spend some more time on learning new spells, maybe even form a party to join for safety. You lack battle experience.”

Feeling that her words were indeed right, Edward nodded and decided to sleep to recover his mana before heading back to the city. He wanted to check on how Violet was doing, report his progress to Circe and pass by the beast taming guild to see if there was a way for him to bring Minx with him inside the city.

He spent the whole night working with Azure on a new spell, a spell he called Water Slicer. The spell in itself was not actually a new one, but a way to use multiple Water Blades, all at once, increasing it’s area of attack to make it harder to dodge.

On the morning of the next day, he cleaned himself up before going to pick up his clothes and returning to the city. After letting Minx hide in the forest, he went straight to the Violet Flower inn.

As it was still quite early in the morning, he found Violet serving food to the customers seated in the main lobby. Violet also noticed him as soon as stepped through the inn’s door as a smile blossomed on her face.

Once she was done, she came up to Edward who also took a seat at one of the tables and asked: “Do you want something to eat or drink, Edward? It’s on the house.”

Edward shook his head as he replied: “I only came by to pick a change of clothes and check up on you before going to visit a few places inside the city. Did those guys came to bother you again?”

Violet shook her head with a smile, but Edward could see that her smile seemed a bit forced.

“Tell me the truth. Did they ask for more money? I still have around 15 silvers left..”

“No. No. No.” Violet quickly shook her head before continuing: “They came to ask for another payment, but I had the money to pay them this time so they just went away.”

Edward could still feel that she was hiding something, but decided to not question her about it anymore since she clearly didn’t want to speak about it and asked for his room key. After getting a change of clothes, since he’s been wearing these ones for a few days, he washed the old ones before hanging them and walking back inside the inn.

“Violet, I’ve left my clothes out to dry in the courtyard. I’ll come back to pick them up in the evening.”

Seeing Violet nod, he started walking towards the door only to hear a soft and quiet, mosquito like voice from behind: “Take care, Edward.”

He stopped and turned his head around. “You take care as well, Violet.”

Seeing her blush with her head lowered, Edward chuckled slightly and continued leaving the inn, heading towards the magician guild.

Passing by the guards at the guild’s gate, he opened the tower and planned to go to the top floor to search for Circe, but that proved unnecessary since Circe, accompanied by a man Edward has never seen before appeared at the door as soon as it opened. The man looked quite young, but Edward already learned not to judge someone’s age by their looks.

Edward remembered the courtesy it was required of a disciple and bowed slightly towards Circe while saying: “Master.”

The man put on a surprised expression as soon as he heard Edward’s words and turned towards Circe while saying: “Oh, Winterhope, I didn’t think you’ll ever pick a disciple. The competition at the end of the year will turn more interesting with you participating.”

“That’s enough, Barlow. Me choosing a disciple is none of your business. You can go now.”

The man just chuckled and nodded towards Edward before leaving with a weird smile on his face.

“What was that about and who is that retard?” asked Edward after the man barely took a few steps away from the tower. He figured from Circe’s cold tone that their relation was not a good one and decided to get some good points with his master by insulting the guy. Since the man was not that far, he heard Edward’s question but just ignored it and continued walking forward.

Circle let out a small chuckle and moved to the side: “Let’s speak inside, this way I can also check on your progress.”

Edward nodded and stepped inside before they both started heading towards the magic practice room.

“That is Rave Barlow, a fire mage of the guild. I would tell you to not get into his bad books, but it’s a bit too late for that. Be careful since he’s quite petty and, even if he won’t do anything publicly, he might try to get back at you some other way.”

“Is he strong?”

“He should be around my level and I can probably win in a fight against him, but for you….” Replied Circe after pondering for a moment.

“It would have helped to know that before, but what’s done is done.” Said Edward while shrugging his shoulders.

As the two of them were chatting, they reached the magic practice room and Circe said: “So, did you learn any new spell during this time?”

Edward nodded and did a demonstration of his Water Blade and Water Slicer spells. Circe nodded and said: “Not bad, but you need to slightly increase the water pressure of the spell. This will serve to increase it’s cutting power. Otherwise, your progress is not bad.”

“I will. I also reached level 2.” Replied Edward.

“That fast? Did you go to a dungeon?”

“No, I just hunted magic beasts in the forest. I even almost got killed by some kind of bird a few days ago…”

“Not bad, maybe you’ll even be able to participate in the end of the year competition.” Said Circe with an approving nod.

“What is that competition?”

“It’s an tournament held inside the guild between disciples. You need to be at least level 10 to participate, while the maximum level is 19. Since the difference is so big, everyone is only allowed to use a total of 1000 mana during the fight and only beginner level spells.”

“Is there any prize?”

“There are prizes, but I don’t really know what those will be this year. Whatever it is, I can guarantee it will be worth it.”

“How long is left until the competition?” asked Edward, not really understanding what is considered the end of the year in this world.

Circe actually didn’t find it strange, since keeping track of the time of the years was not that easy and answered: “Almost four months.”

“Okay, I’ll try. Master, I also wanted to ask you, is it possible for me to bring a magic beast inside the city?”

“A tamed one?” asked Circe with a curious expression.

“Yes, I found a wounded wolf and, after taking care of it, it started following me around. I wondered if I could bring it inside the city?” Said Edward after making up a small lie to explain his relationship with Minx.

“Only if you obtain a beast tamer certificate from their guild, but obtaining one is not that easy. First, it’s quite expensive and second, you will need to pass a lot of tests to prove that the magic beast listens to you completely and it’s not a danger to the others. I hears the tests are so harsh that there are only two beast tamers that are allowed to enter the city with their magic beasts and both of them are demi-humans, able to communicate with their tamed beasts a lot easier than a human would.”

Edward actually felt that the tests will prove quite easy, but was more worried about the money part. “Do you know how much that certificate costs?”

“I do not. You can go and ask at the guild.”

“I already planned to go there, but I wanted to see what you knew about it first.”

The two of them spoke for a few more minutes, time in which Circe explained to Edward how he could increase the pressure in his Water Blade spell after which he said his goodbyes to Circe and left for the beast tamers guild.

The beast tamers guild was a small building on an almost completely empty street. If not for the plaque on the door, Edward would have thought he got the wrong place.

As he stepped inside, the door let out a small creak and a bored looking young man with long hair that was petting an equally bored looking cat looked turned towards the door.

“Welcome to the beast tamer guild.” Said the young man. The cat also turned around and, after looking at Edward for a moment, it stood up and doubled in size as it hissed threateningly towards him with all the hair on her body raising up in alarm.

“Sandy, what is wrong with you?” reprimanded the young man, but the cat didn’t move a single muscle and kept staring at Edward with caution.

‘This kitty’s instincts are quite sharp.’ Though Edward before saying to the young man: “It’s fine, I don’t mind it. I just came by to ask you a question.”

The young man kept trying to calm down the cat, but after being unsuccessful for a few more times he let out a sigh and said: “I don’t know why she doesn’t seem to like you. Do you mind waiting for a moment so I can take her in the back?”

‘I don’t like her either.’ Thought Edward as he nodded and watched as the man literally dragged the cat by it’s collar towards a room in the back. Once he was left alone in the main hall of the guild, he took a seat on a chair and waited for the young man to return.

The young man came back around ten minutes later, fully covered in sweat.

“I apologize about Sandy’s behavior, she’s usually a docile and obedient magic beast. I don’t know what happened…anyway, how can I help you?”

“I befriended a magic beast as well and wanted to know if it’s possible to obtain a certificate to bring her inside the city.” Replied Edward as he decided to go straight to the point.

The young man nodded and said: “That shouldn’t be a problem. What type of magic beast is it?”

“A wolf.”

The young man coughed a couple of times before saying: “Wolf? That won’t be easy..”

“And why is that?”

“Well, wolves are usually quite ferocious and the tests are quite harsh for them, not even mentioning the tax...”

“Can you tell what those are?” asked Edward, still willing to give it a try.

“First will be a test of it’s intelligence and bond with you in which you will have to convince the wolf to listen to a series of commands given to you by us. If you pass that part, it will be the starving part. You will place it in a cage full of meat and convince it to abstain from eating any of the meat there for a total of two days straight. If it passes both tests, as long as you pay the ten gold coins fee, you will obtain your certificate and also become a member of the beast tamer guild.”

‘These fuckers want to starve Minx for two days? And ten gold coins? That is highway robbery…’ though Edward to himself before sighing and saying: “I’ll think about it and come back another time if I decide to go through with it...”

The young man nodded and Edward stood up to leave. Just then, the main door opened slightly with a creek once more and a small head peeked inside. Long straight vermilion-red hair cascaded downwards, gently moving with the current passing through as a pair of equally as red, playful pair of eyes quickly scanned the room.

“Is that old bastard here yet?” she asked in a worried tone.

The young man let out a sigh and said: “No, Naomi. He’s still at the lord’s mansion.”

She smiled at the young man’s answer and quickly entered before closing the door and fixed her eyes on Edward. Edward’s face became a bit awkward as he looked at her face before moving his sight down and saying:

“D cup girl?”
