Seeing that everyone in the room suddenly turned mute, Edward walked up to Akh, grabbed him by the neck and lifted him up to eye level. Then, fixing his eyes that were turning darker by the second into Akh’s, he said: “What did those bastards do to Violet?”
Akh was terrified by Edward and immediately woke up from his drunken stupor as he said with a stutter: “They came saying that they increased the protection fee. Since she didn’t have the money to pay.. The the bastards tied her up and flayed her once for every silver coin she owed in the middle of the tavern. After that…”
Edward heard enough and threw Akh back on his chair before he could finish his sentence. Fixing his eyes on all the demi-humans there, he said with disgust: “So you all saw a woman getting flayed in the middle of her house and did nothing to intervene? What a great fucking demi-human race. You all deserve the oppression you are getting with your pathetic behavior!”
After he was done venting at them, he turned around and walked outside while all the demi-humans inside just hang their heads in silence, none of them saying a single word back.
Walking out the door, he started heading towards Ingvar’s house. He was angry, but knew even if he found those bastards, he would not be able to do anything. Since he was already in the residential district, he quickly arrived at his destination and, just as before, Ingvar opened the door before he had the chance to knock.
“Did something happen?” asked Ingvar after noticing the look on Edward’s face.
Edward nodded and said: “Can we speak inside? I need your help.”
Ingvar knew that, for Edward to come to him looking like that, something major must have happened and moved to the side to let him in. After Edward entered the house, he was led by Ingvar to a large table in the dining hall.
Just as they sat there, Kara also walked down from the second floor. Ingvar ignored his sister that took a seat next to him and asked Edward with a serious look in his eyes: “So, what’s up?”
“I need information…”
Ingvar nodded and waited for Edward to continue.
“When I first came into this city, I kept getting thrown out of all the inns before eventually I found one that was willing to take me in. The Violet Flower Inn in the demi-human residential area.”
Seeing Ingvar nod, Edward continued telling him more about his start in the city. Eventually he reached the important part: “Now when I went there to grab a change of clothing after being in the dungeon with you guys, I found out that some bastards from a group called The Swarm actually tied up the innkeeper and whipped her like some sort of animal.” Edward clenched his fists so hard that cracking noises kept sounding through the room, but Kara and Ingvar didn’t say anything.
“I want to make those bastards pay for what they did so I wondered if you can help me find out about who took part in the assault. I know I can’t take on the group itself, but the ones that touched her must die. Can you help me?”
Ingvar put on a troubled look, knowing full well how strong the Swarm was and how much trouble Edward could end up into if he were to mess with them, but Kara didn’t seem to care as she said: “I’ll find out for you. I know some people in the dark guilds I can ask.”
“Kara, are you…” said Ingvar, but Kara didn’t let him finish as she said: “I know what you’re worried about, but do you really think the Swarm will give a rat’s ass about some pathetic low level thugs?”
“But…” Ingvar tried to speak once more but ended up cut off by Kara once again: “I’m also going with him.”
“No way. Father will not let you.” Said Ingvar as he stood up from his seat, obviously against the whole thing.
“Then I guess he will not find out. Do you really think I’ll take a step back after what I heard?”
Ingvar got tongue tied, not really knowing what to say and Edward being here didn’t make handling the situation any easier.
“If you have nothing to say, it’s decided. Come back as soon as it starts darkening outside and we’ll go seek them out. I’ll have the information by then.” Said Kara as she stood up and walked upstairs.
Edward just now remembered that he had a meeting with their father that evening and found the situation a bit awkward now. Thinking for a second, he said: “One more thing I have to tell you…”. Edward proceeded in explaining what happened in the morning.
By the end of the story, Ingvar had an incredulous look on his face as he said exasperated: “Never a peaceful day with you around is it?…”
Edward made a wry smile and said: “Tell me about it… I’ll come back later. Now I have to go to the beast tamer guild and to see my master.”
Ingvar nodded and said: “Alright. I’ll see you later.”
Edward could see Ingvar was a bit displeased with the whole situation but there was nothing he could do. Thanking Ingvar, he stood up and walked towards the exit.
After he reached back on the street in front of the house, he looked up at the tree growing through the middle of the house and whispered: “Thanks Kara, I’ll make it up to you somehow.”, before turning around and heading for the beast tamer guild.
Reaching the guild, his anger also calmed down slightly and he stepped inside where the same young man from last time was inside petting his cat, giving Edward a feeling of déjà vu.
The cat turned towards the entrance as soon as Edward walked inside and she once again got on full alert, hissing towards him. The young man put on a helpless face and said: “Wait a second. I’ll take her in the back.”
Edward took a seat as he waited for the young man to come back. Entering back inside the room, the young man bowed towards Edward and said: “I’m sorry that happened again…”
“It’s fine.” Said Edward before getting straight to business: “I’ve decided to try and obtain a certificated for my tamed beast, but some things have kind of changed since last time.”
“Oh?” exclaimed the young man with a raised eyebrow as he took a seat behind his desk, “Do tell.”
“Well…” Edward proceeded in giving him a brief explanation about Minx’s evolution and what happened the same morning at the city gate.
“I heard about a wolf attacking the city’s southern gate this morning, but I never imagined it would be your pet… that indeed complicates things. The council will probably not approve the request if they find out your beast was the one who attacked the city…”
Edward sighed and asked: “Isn’t there anything I can do? She can now actually communicate with them. Can’t we use that to convince them to agree?”
“Small chance.” Said the young man with a pondering look, “There are a few beasts known to speak the human language, some of them even capable of taking a more humanoid form, but they are all very dangerous and usually a threat to humans, which means the fact that she can now speak might even make things even worse… I don’t really know what to tell you..”
“Is there really no way?” asked Edward, really wishing he could bring Minx with him in the city.
The young man thought for a moment before saying: “Well, the most powerful say in the council belongs to the city lord himself. I suppose that if you could convince him to agree there might be a chance to sway the others as well… that will not be easy either..”
Edward got a bit excited even if the young man didn’t seem too sure of his chances. At least now he had an angle to exploit so he asked: “Why do you say it won’t be easy?”
“Have you ever met the city lord?” asked the young man with a sigh.

Seeing Edward shake his head, the young man said: “Well, he’s not the easy to sway kind of guy… he’s always been about profit and making as much money as he can. If it brings him no advantage, he will never agree to it…”
‘A greedy fuck.. It makes sense.. Letting those Swarm bastards run wild in his city as long as they pay a fucking tribute…’ thought Edward as he nodded towards the young man. ‘Well, corruption does have it’s advantages sometimes. I wonder how much money will I have to offer so that I can convince him to agree…’
The young man had no idea what Edward was thinking about and, hearing the scratching sounds from the back, he asked: “Is there anything else you want to know? I need to let Sandy free before she scratches a hole in the floor of the building.”
Edward let out a small chuckle and thanked the young man before taking his leave. He had one more thing to do before the end of the day and started heading towards the magician guild.
As he reached Circe’s tower, he let out another sigh and passed through the door. ‘I think I sighed more today than I did my entire life on earth…’
Walking up the spiral staircase, he headed for Circe’s room on the top floor, but even after knocking for a couple of times, he received no answer.
“Hmm. Is she out?” mumbled Edward as he walked down to check the library as well. As he walked inside the library, he found Circe reading though some book while seated on the sofa. Hearing the door open, she didn’t lift her head from the book and said in an indifferent tone: “Oh, did you finally remember that you had a master to report to?”
Edward awkwardly walked forward and sat down across from her, knowing she must be quite pissed he hasn’t passed by in a month and a half. Seeing that she was still reading through the book without looking at him, Edward said awkwardly: “It’s good to see you, master. How have you been?”
Circe didn’t reply and asked back: “What level are you now?”
“Err, eight…”
“Mhm, and how many spells can you use?”
“Three spells and one skill..” Replied Edward, feeling a bit embarrassed he hasn’t learn any new spell in all that time.
Circe finally looked at him and raised an eyebrow as she asked: “Are you telling me that you didn’t learn a single new spell for a month and a half?”
Edward scratched his head and nodded in reply, causing Circe to actually throw the book in her hand at his face.
“You better give me a good reason not to throw you out of the guild right at this instant!” said Circe in a pissed tone, Edward being able to feel the couch he was sitting on getting slightly colder by the second.
“Calm down master. Is not like I didn’t do anything this entire time. I increased my level and also worked on mastering my new skill.” Said Edward while trying to pacify his master that looked like she was about to impale him with an ice spear.
“What crap do I give about a skill? You’re a water mage and, as my disciple, knowing only three spells is a total disgrace. Even a brain-dead mage with the lowest aptitude for water magic will be able to learn more spells. That’s it, if you don’t want to get kicked out, you’re going to stay locked inside the tower here until you learn at least ten spells. Choose now.”
Edward was starting to really panic, seeing the serious look in Circe’s eyes and said: “Please reconsider, master. I can’t stay here. I have a meeting with the adventurer guild master this evening.”
“Faelyn? What business do you have with that tree hugging idiot?” asked Circe while raising one of her eyebrows.
*Cough**Cough*
Edward started coughing as soon as he heard his master calling the guild master a tree hugging idiot and, after calming down his cough, he asked: “Did you hear about this morning’s incident at the southern gate?”
Circe nodded, wondering where he was getting with this and waited for Edward to continue: “I told you a while ago I have a wolf magic beast as a companion. The wolf that attacked the city this morning is that beast. It’s a long story..”
Circe seemed interested and crossed her legs as she rested her back against the couch and said: “Do I look like I’m in a hurry or something? Tell me what happened, I only heard bits and pieces.”
Edward sighed and summoned his status tabled before placing it on the table in front of her. Circe didn’t know why he did that, but when she saw all his subclasses and the amount of life force he needed to level up, one of her eyes twitched and he asked: “Are you actually retarded?”
“That’s not…”
“No, no. Explain to me why you have a total of five classes. I’m really curious.” Said Circe as a thin layer of ice started covering the couch under her, slowly extending towards Edward.
With no other choice, he quickly explained everything that went on as he picked his subclasses. Hearing his story, Circe calmed down slightly and looked once more at his shape-shifter subclass while asking: “So this class activated on it’s own once you selected the other four?”
Edward nodded like an obedient child and waited for her to continue. Circe then looked at his magic and skills, eye twitching once more as she saw he only knew three spells. Once her eyes landed on Elemental shifting, her expression changed and she picked up the tablet while asking: “Have you been able to use elemental shifting yet?”
“No, I have no idea what that spell is.”
Circe placed the tablet back on the table and went towards one of her book rafts without saying anything. After looking through book titles, she picked up an old looking one and placed in on the table as she sat back down.
Edward looked at the faint words on the cover <Forbidden ancient magic>. Circe opened the book gently and flipped a couple of pages until she exclaimed: “Here it is…”.
Edward was curious what was going on, when Circe turned the book around and pointed towards a paragraph with one of her fingers.
<Elemental Shifting, no cost: A spell used to change any spell’s elemental affinity even after casting. Classified as forbidden magic due to the elemental advantage it brings in mage combat. Requirements: mixed elemental mage class.>
Edward looked at the text and asked: “Is this really so strong? Doesn’t look like a big deal to me.”
Circe nodded and explained: “It’s not a grand spell with great destructive power, but it will allow you to counter any kind of elemental spell without any supplementary mana drain, which in a fight between two equally strong mage is a huge advantage. Imagine two max affinity mage fighting each other. One uses a fireball which costs two mana to attack. The other one will use a water barrier of one mana cost to block it and, since water has an elemental advantage over fire, the attack will be blocked, but if the first one can use elemental shifting, he can turn the fireball into an earth bullet, the correspondent earth spell, and easily penetrate through water barrier. Now you get it?”
Edward nodded and said: “I understand, but I still don’t think it will be that big of an advantage…”
“Well, I gave you an example with low level spells so that you can picture the situation in your head and understand, but with over 1000 mana cost spells, it will spell death for any mage caught by surprise at the elemental change.”
Edward nodded but was still not that excited about it. He couldn’t really use the spell anyway. Circe noticed this and sighed while saying: “Really an idiot… the fact that it appears on your spells listed means you should be able to use it any time. The only reason I imagine you can’t is because you only have a contract with a water spirit. Once you form a contract with another elemental spirit, the spell should be unlocked. Well, no matter. Someone was in a hurry and actually locked all his subclass slots. You will have to mix some of them to be able to learn other elements and that won’t happen anytime soon…” continued Circe with a sigh, not really sure if she should strangle this disciple of her.
After a while, she said with a downcast look: “Now tell me what the deal is with that wolf…”
