Edward didn’t know what was happening outside, but he could feel Flastrdra’s heartbeat getting slower through the muscles in her mouth. Even so, there was nothing he could do but wait.
After half an hour, the tightly locked fangs slowly opened and Edward was free to step outside. He was in a dark cave, so he quickly turned into his wolf form to check on Flastrdra’s condition.
What he saw made him break out in a cold sweat. One of her wings and legs was completely gone. There were burnt holes all across her body, and the light in her eyes looked like it would fade away at any moment.
“Hehe. Who would have guessed I won’t be escorting you back?”
Edward returned to human form and came in front of her eyes. “Stop talking. I’ll think of something. Fenrir?”
Fenrir was silent, and a tired laugh came from Flastrdra.
“I’ve already lived for thousands of years… My debt to you… is paid. Edward… my child.”
Edward’s eyes started tearing up as he placed one hand on her scales. “Fenrir, please! There must be something we can do. Anything.”
[I’m sorry Edward. A high-level cleric might save her, but…]
“I’m going now… my child… in your care…” Flastrdra spoke for the third time and she closed her eyes.
“No, please no. Wake up. You still have one life you owe me. You can’t leave yet…” Edward broke out in silent cries as he kneed in front of her head and tried to make her open her eyes, but there was no reaction from her anymore.
[Edward, she’s gone.]
‘No. She can’t be. Damn it.’ Yelled Edward inwardly as he hit the rock underneath hard enough that his entire fist became nothing more than a gory mess of blood and bones.
Gritting his teeth, he remembered something and said: “Fenrir, that core. Maybe it can.”
Summoning the chaos core he received a while ago, he tried placing it into the dragon’s mouth.
Nothing happened.
[Edward, it can’t…]
“It’s something from a God. Why can’t it save her? What kind of half-ass God is that? She died for me, Fenrir. I can’t let it….”
Edward clenched his fists and fell silent. He kept crying while cursing under his breath at the dragons, the gods, the viera… Even with all the cursing, Flastrdra never open her eyes again or spoke any other word. She was gone.
Taking a deep breath, he slowly stood up and placed his left hand on Flastrdra’s head.
His tone hoarse, but completely calm, he said: “That debt you’ve owed me, consider it paid in full and more. I promise you, those bastards in the dragon kingdom, I’ll send them all your way.”
“As for your child, you can rest in peace. I will protect him with my life.”
With his words ending, he cleared his tears and started walking away.
[Are you alright?] asked Fenrir in a quiet tone.
“I will be. Now I need to save Violet. Can’t let her sacrifice be in vain as well.”
Edward turned into his wolf form and kept running for an hour until he reached the end of the cave. He would have reached there faster, but one of his legs was still mangled from when he hit the floor of the cave. Seeing a thin blue membrane covering the exit, he turned back into his human form and said: “Fenrir, can the wolf eat that?”
[Yes.]
Without another word, he immediately knocked himself out.
Inside his soul space, he didn’t say a single word and waited for the transformation to revert.
Waking back into his own body, he looked at his healed hand with mixed feelings in his eyes.
“That damn wolf…”
[That should have been the spell the people of the city used to seal the old tunnel passing through the mountains.]
“I know.” Said Edward and turned into his wolf form before heading south. He had to use the wolf to recover his stamina a few times and by the time he reached the city gate, it was already evening. Reverting into his human form, he entered the city and headed straight for Violet’s inn.
There, he was surprised to notice a commotion at the door. There was a horde of demi-humans in front of the door yelling at two city guards that were blocking them from entering. Worry gripped his heart and he could only hope he was not too late.
Frowning slightly, he made his way through the crowd and arrived in front of the guards.
“What is going on here?” asked Edward, and the beasts stopped yelling, recognizing him immediately.
“No one may enter by order of the…” before the guard could finish speaking, Edward grabbed him by the neck and lifted him up. He was in no mood to deal with whatever this was.
The other guard moved to grab his sword, only for Edward to turn and look at him with his eyes flashing black. “If you move, I’ll snap his neck. Now, am I allowed in or not?”
The guard froze, not knowing what to do, but Edward just threw the other guard at him, making them both fall to the ground, and walked in.
Inside the inn, there was only Kara drinking from a cup at a table. Hearing the commotion outside and seeing Edward walk in, she said: “You’re finally here.”
“Kara? What’s going on?” asked Edward while walking towards her.
“Your little girlfriend went crazy and tried to sleep with all the people here. She even charmed my brother when he tried to stop her, so I could only make my way here and beat everyone up.” She replied indifferently before taking a sip of her drink.
“Where is she?” asked Edward, but his worried expression didn’t ease up at all.
“She’s upstairs in her room, but don’t worry. She’s fine, and nothing happened between her and the others.” Said Kara, already understanding what Edward was thinking.
Edward heaved a sigh of relief and asked: “Can you keep guard for a bit more so that no one will disturb us? I figured out a way to fix her problem.”
Kara nodded silently and took another sip of her drink.
When he reached Violet’s room, he found her tied up with thick ropes while laying on the bed, apparently asleep.
“Alright, Fenrir. What are we doing?”

[You just wake her up and make her use her charm on you. Leave the rest to me but make sure you don’t break eye contact with her.]
Edward approached the bed and gently caressed her face.
“You must come back…” he said under her breath before kissing her on the forehead and using a water ball to wake her up.
Violet’s eyes snapped open, and she looked directly at Edward. A seductive smile appeared on her lips as her eyes turned bright purple.
————
Inside Edward’s soul space.
A violet portal appeared in front of Fenrir and a purple mist started coming out of it. Fenrir stood up and opened her maw, devouring the mist while making slowly her way through the violet portal.
When she passed through the portal, she arrived inside a place similar to Edward’s soul space, only being surrounded by a purple mist.
There were two women looking almost identical to Violet, one of them staring at Fenrir with a frown while the other was unconscious in a corner with a frown on her face.
“Who are you?” asked one of them.
Fenrir didn’t even bother answering as she pounced on the woman and bit into the hand she raised to protect herself.

Back in the real world, Violet’s seductive smile soon turned into a face full of horror as she started struggling, but Edward held her still while forcing her eyes to remain open.
Seeing the pain and horror in Violet’s eyes, Edward forced himself to remain steadfast, never looking away for even a moment.
“Please, stop. Edward, you’re hurting me. Why are you hurting me?”
She kept pleading and begging, but Edward never released the hold he had on her. Tears were slowly falling down his cheeks, but he didn’t say a single word in reply either. He was afraid that he would break down if he opened his mouth to speak.
“I promise I won’t hurt the girl. I’ll go back to sleep. You’ll never have to see me again, please.”
Edward hung on through the girl’s cries and pleas for almost half an hour until her eyes lost the luster in them before they returned to their blue color.
[It’s done.]
Hearing Fenrir’s words, Edward fell on his rear and took a deep breath. He knew he has killed another soul, but that soul threatened his lover so he had to do it. What got to him the most was it using Violet’s face and voice to beg at him. He was afraid he could never erase the image of that horror-filled face from his mind.
“How is she?” asked Edward after a while.
[Her soul was weak and asleep, but uninjured. I consumed every trace of the other soul so there will be no further trouble, but she will still need a few days to wake up.]
“As long as she’ll be alright.” Muttered Edward as he stood back up.
Brushing his hand through her soft hair, Edward smiled softly and said: “I wish I could stay with you, but I need to sleep. I’ll come back later to check on you. I love you, Violet.”
Kissing her lips briefly, he cut all the ropes restraining her and walked back downstairs. Kara was looking into her cup and didn’t turn to look at Edward as she asked: “Is it done?”
“It is. I’m going to rest since I can’t even remember the last time I slept. Can I ask you to keep watch over her until I return?”
Kara nodded, still not looking at him, and said nothing more. After Edward thanked her and left the inn, she looked absentmindedly toward the inn’s door with her eyes red and cheeks covered in tears.
“I love you too…”
Edward just ran into the forest outside and, once he was far enough from the city, laid down to sleep.
“What are you going to do now?” asked Fenrir once Edward returned.
“I’ll probably wait for her to wake up before heading towards the south to check on Minx and the egg. Why?”
“I know you want to protect the egg, but you can’t just sit near it until it hatches.”
“No problem. Isn’t there a dungeon right there? I can’t hunt inside while also monitoring the egg from time to time.”
“And what about the others? Are you going to bring them with you?”
“I still don’t know. After I check on Minx and make sure everything is alright, I’ll decide. I would bring them with me now, but everyone has too many secrets. While I trust them myself, I still don’t want to risk endangering Flastrdra’s child somehow.”
“You could swear them to secrecy.” Proposed Azure from the side.
“How does that work?”
“You make a contract while swearing on the mother tree. It’s quite that simple and you only need a section of the mother tree’s roots to do it. I’m sure that the adventurer guild must have some.”
“I’ll think about it. Now I want to rest for a while. With everything that’s been going on, I’m exhausted.” Said Edward as he closed his eyes.
In the morning of the next day, when he returned to the inn, he found Ingvar there waiting for him. Ingvar had a hesitant look on his face the moment Edward walk in.
“How is she?” asked Edward.
“Edward, about what happened…”
“No need for you to apologize or anything.” Interrupted Edward. “I know about her charming abilities. Instead, I want to thank you for keeping an eye on her as I told you to.” Edward didn’t want to imagine what would have happened if Ingvar was not here. Sleeping with the entire inn was the least of the issues, the bigger one being that Violet would have probably been gone forever after absorbing all that lifespan and if the huldra soul wouldn’t kill her, the city guards will.
Ingvar nodded and said: “She’s sleeping upstairs.”
Edward thanked Ingvar again before walking directly upstairs. Violet’s complexion was slightly pale, but other than that, everything seemed normal. Fenrir also informed him that her soul was slowly recovering.
Edward spent the next two days inside Violet’s room, not leaving for even a moment. He just sat near her and took this time to plan for the near future.
Two days later, around noon, Violet’s eyelids trembled, and she slowly opened her eyes.
