Edward and Violet made their way toward the place they lift Minx and found her sleeping next to a small fox.
Hearing Edward sigh, Violet giggled and said: “It looks like she really likes you.”
“More like she likes to annoy me…”, muttered Edward as he approached the two. Phoebe looked up and asked: “What took you guys so long? We were getting bored waiting for you.”
Edward shook his head and asked: “How come you’re here to pester me again?”
Phoebe turned into her human form again before rubbing affectionately against Minx’s fur and saying: “Who came to see you? I came to see Minx, but she said she misses you, so I kept her company so she won’t be lonely anymore. How can you let such a cute lady alone in the forest? Do you even have a heart?”
Edward sighed and ignored her again as he walked forward and pat Minx’s head again before saying: “Sorry girl. I solved nothing about your pass today. I’ll try again over the next few days.”
“I understand.”, replied Minx, not seeming to care too much about it too much.
Seeing she was ignored again, Phoebe turned into a fox and said: “I’m leaving you three love birds alone. I need to check on Naomi.”. She then bolted away too fast for even Edward to see.
The three just spent the rest of the day just cuddling and fooling around. In the evening, they returned to the city briefly so that Violet could eat something before returning to spend the night in the forest with Minx at Violet’s insistence.
After Violet finally fell asleep, Edward motioned for Minx to keep silent and sneaked away.
“What is with that fox?” asked Edward when he was sure he was far enough so Violet wouldn’t hear him.
[I don’t know. She just feels like a normal beast that gained human form. Be careful, she must be over level 50.]
“That’s alright. She doesn’t look hostile towards either me or Minx, just annoying. Even tho Circe’s behavior seemed quite weird today.”
[Indeed. There must be something else between them.]
“Well, it’s not like I can make either of them tell me if they don’t want to. I just wanted to check if there’s anything else you might know. I’m going back before Violet wakes up.”
Hearing no answer from Fenrir, he walked back and sat down next to the sleeping Violet. He couldn’t sleep, so he just experimented with a water ball.
In the morning, the two returned to the city and, since Violet wouldn’t be allowed to observe the exam, Edward convinced her to go to the inn and have breakfast.
Once he reached Circe’s tower, she was already waiting for him just outside the door with a bored look on her face.
After some formal greetings, they made their way deeper inside the magician guild.
“Who else would supervise the exam?”
“The guild leader and a representative of each branch. They are usually the strongest elemental mage in each branch, but if busy, they might send others as well.”
As they reached an enormous tower in the center of the guild, Circe led Edward inside and a kind-looking old man welcomed the two. Just judging by the long white hair and the intelligent look in his eyes, Edward could already guess the reason for which the mark on his hand heated up. Since Circe looked like she was in her mid-twenties when she was almost 40, this old man probably was over a century old to look like this.
The old man smiled towards both Circe and Edward and said: “Welcome to my tower. You must be Edward. Circe’s been bragging about you so much that I couldn’t wait to meet you.”
Both Circe and Edward bowed at the same time and said: “Guild leader.”
“Haha, let’s talk on the way to the examination room. Rave is still not here, but he probably won’t be long.”
‘That guy is coming too, huh?’
As the three made their way down a circular flight of stairs, the guild leader said: “Edward, my boy, do you mind letting me have a look at your status tablet?”
Edward turned towards Circe and, seeing her nod, summoned the tablet and gave it to the old man.
He looked through it before saying in amazement: “That’s quite an interesting unique class you got there. How does it work?”
Circe replied in Edward’s stead as she said: “He can change his body into that of a wolf with increased agility and strength.”
“Hmm. That’s why you allowed the boy to take these subclasses? to increase the close combat capabilities of this unique class?”
Circe’s eyebrow twitched as she said: “He got them on his own. It has nothing to do with me.”
The old laughed and gave the status tablet back to Edward. “I remember you saying he has a great affinity for all elements. It is indeed a shame for him to miss the path of an elemental mage class.”
As they were speaking, the guild leader led them inside a round room. There were already two men waiting inside there behind some desks with bored looks in their eyes.
Edward had seen none of these two, but he could guess they were the representatives of the air and earth branch. After some casual greetings, Edward was told to sit at a desk in the center of the room as both Circe and the leader got seated at their own desks as well.
After five minutes of awkward silence, Rave also walked in. He greeted the others and the guild leader, but ignored Edward completely before sitting at his own desk.
“Now that everyone’s here, I would like us to start the exam. Edward, if you turn that paper in front of you around, you’ll find a series of 100 questions, all related to intermediate water magic. You have half an hour to answer as many questions as you can.”
“To promote successfully, you need to answer at least 50 questions correctly. The moment you pick the pen, your timer will start. Understood?”
Edward nodded, already aware of the rules from Circe, and turned the paper around before picking up his pen. With the knowledge from back on earth and Azure to fill some gaps here and there, the test was a walk in the park for him, and he started writing immediately.
After 20 minutes of nonstop writing, with his increased agility, he filled over 50 pages with his answers and put the pen down.

“I’m done.”
Circe smiled briefly and the guild leader came to pick up the answers. It took ten more minutes of constant nodding from the leader to put the papers down. Just as he was about to announce the completion of the test, Rave cleared his throat and said: “Guild leader, if I may say something.”
The guild leader nodded, but both Circe and Edward frowned, knowing this guy was up to no good.
“It recently came to my attention that Edward here was the one who broke the seal on the path going north and because of him, lava from Fallwrath Volcano spilled out. I don’t think such a person should be allowed to pass the exam until an investigation is conducted into this matter. It would bring shame to the honor of our guild.”
Edward remained silent, wishing to see what the others will say. Circe gave Rave a mocking smile and said: “Rave, I know that my disciple calling you a retard stroke a bit too close to home, but isn’t bringing such ridiculous claims out of pettiness a little too much, even for you? When the seal broke, my disciple was barely level 10. He can’t remove a level 40 barrier even now that he’s level 20. How can you claim he did it ten levels earlier?”
Rave’s face turned red as he said: “I got this information from the adventurer guild. If it was not true, why would you bother to fix it? I know Faelyn came to your tower right after he got the information.”
“Because I’m the strongest ice mage around. If Faelyn really suspected that, would Edward still walk freely around town? Is your brain made of mush or something?”
“That’s only because….”
“That’s enough, Rave, Circe.”, said the old man in a strict tone. “Stop squabbling like some children in my tower. Rave, do you have any proof?”
“No, but…”
“Then shut up. He’s already passed the exam and with a perfect score at that. Whatever happened with that barrier is none of my problem. The safety of the city is the adventurer guild’s responsibility. Now pass me your seal.”
Rave scoffed and threw a token to the guild leader. The others followed suit and the guild leader turned towards Edward. “Follow me, Edward. You have passed the test with a perfect score.”
Edward nodded and followed the guild leader. They passed through a room in the back and followed a long flight of stairs down. Edward wanted to ask where they were going, but since the leader didn’t say a word, he didn’t think it would be his turn to speak.
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at a large door. The guild leader used the tokens he got from the others to put them in indentations that fit them perfectly before taking another token out of his robe and placing it in the middle.
As the door started opening, the leader turned with a stern face towards Edward and said: “Once you are inside, you must place your status tablet in the slot in the middle of the room. After that, you will wait until the tablet floats out on its own before walking back and using it to open this door from the inside. Remember, you may touch nothing else inside and you are prohibited from testing your spells as well.”
Edward nodded and asked: “Isn’t guild leader coming as well?”
“No, only one person is allowed inside or the tablet won’t activate. You can go in now.”
Edward nodded again and walked into the room. He heard the door close behind him, but he ignored it and looked for the place where he should put his tablet at.
[It’s a root connection.] Fenrir’s serious voice broke the silence of the place.
“Root connection? Do you mean like one of Yggdrasil’s roots?”
[Yeah, it’s straight under you. This is probably the place where they carve those status tablets from.]
Edward looked down at the brown floor before bending and feeling its texture.
“Indeed, it feels like I’m touching wood. Do you want to eat it?” asked Edward.
[I do, but it’s not the time yet. Just finish the promotion procedure and we’ll be out. At least we know where to find a link to the roots for the future.]
Edward walked forward until he reached the slot the guild leader has mentioned. Summoning the tablet, he placed it right inside the slot and sat down next to it.
At first, nothing happened, but slowly, the tablet started shining and the room became more and more humid.
[The room is full of water mana. Close your eyes and try to feel the mana around.]
Edward nodded and closed his eyes just as Fenrir told him to. After a while, he started feeling like he was submersed under a vast ocean. The pressure was also making it harder to breathe as time went on. In that ocean, Edward’s senses slowly started expanding. Even with his eyes closed, he could feel it, the mana surrounding him. It felt like it was his own mana, but at the same time, not.
[Change its state and density. Just like in the theory.]
Edward next focused on modifying the density of the ocean of mana. He felt it getting colder and harder, slowly floating upwards, but at the same time, putting even more pressure on his body.
He then increased the density while changing its state again and he felt the mana caressing his body gently, like he was floating on fluffy clouds.
[Good. Now start absorbing it inside your body.]
Once more doing as Fenrir told him, Edward started attracting the water towards him. The process took a long time, but after he couldn’t feel any more mana around him, he was about to open his eyes, only to be stopped by Fenrir.
[Take your wolf form.]
Edward didn’t understand why but started changing his form as she told him to. Once he was in his wolf form, a wave of pain suddenly started assaulting his body from all directions. As the pain got harder and harder to endure, Edward noticed that even with his eyes closed, he knew everything that was happening around him. He could feel the wolf’s body cracking like someone was squeezing it. He could hear the sound the blood made when it fell on the root beneath and smell his own blood. Everything was so vivid that he felt like he didn’t even need his eyes anymore to see.
Observing the miraculous changes, he even forgot the horrible pain he was in right now.
A long time later, Fenrir’s voice sounded again: [Congratulations. You can turn back now.]
Edward smiled and turned back to a human to check the status tablet.
