Edward sat down, resting his back against the cold dungeon entrance wall. A relieved sigh escaped his lips as he grabbed Violet’s hand.
“I’m sorry for having dragged you into this…”
Violet used both of her hands to squeeze Edward’s as she shook her head to correct him.
“There’s nothing for you to apologize for. This all started with you heading north for my sake. You risked your life to save mine. If anything, I should be the one apologizing to you, not the other way around.”
‘Did it really start because of that?…’ Edward asked himself as he looked at the bite mark on his hand. That was indeed the catalyst that had revealed his truth to Kara, but this would have still happened, eventually.
Heaving another sigh, he closed his eyes and took a moment to calm his thoughts.
‘What now? Should I just level in here? Is it even safe? Where is safe?’
Edward summoned the chaos core and started playing with it while trying to answer all those questions running through his head.
Violet knew Edward was thinking of a solution, so she just rested her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes as well, just letting him know she was there for him if he needed her.
A few hours later, Violet had already fallen asleep when Edward opened his eyes. He didn’t get many answers, but he made one decision. He wanted to head to Oasis. There were too many uncertainties in living here, but most of all, he didn’t want Violet to live inside a dungeon.
Turning towards Minx, he whispered, careful not to wake Violet up: “Minx, try to hunt something for Violet to eat. She has had nothing to eat in quite a while.”
Minx nodded and bolted out of the room.
“Fenrir, what do you think about this place?”
[I don’t think you should leave yet. The dungeon is deep, and if anyone comes, you can just hide inside one of the floors. They are quite large and searching for you would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.]
“Don’t you think Oasis would be better?”
[Probably not. Not even mentioning the assassins, if the dragons know about you, you could already be labeled as a criminal on the entrance tablet.]
Edward hung his head and realized she was right. He has almost forgotten about that. Sadly, he had no way to check out besides going to a city.
“Still, the south is for sure a lot safer than the north, with both the dragons and the elves gunning for me. Hell, maybe even the humans joined them after that show of strength in the City of Ashes. Also, if Kara told the elves about this place, it would turn into a trap…”
[If you were alone, you had a lot of options, but with both the egg and the wolf girl…]
Edward sighed, knowing she was telling the truth, but there was no way he was going to abandon either of them. Edward clenched his fist in frustration. No plan that popped into his head seemed good enough.
“I’ll just go to Oasis. We’ll see what happens after we get there. I need to at least make sure Violet is safe there.”
Having decided, he waited for Minx to return. Once she came back carrying two dead frozen boars, Edward sent her inside the dungeon to cook them.
When Minx returned with the food, Violet’s nose twitched slightly and she woke up with a loud stomach grumble.
“Eat something, Violet. We don’t know how long it will be safe here, so we must leave.”, said Edward.
Seeing the guilt in his eyes, Violet nodded and moved to eat some of the roasted boar Minx made.
Edward stood up and started walking towards the dungeon.
“Minx, please keep watch over this place. I’m going down to pick the egg.”
“Don’t you need help?” asked Minx, knowing Edward’s wolf form couldn’t change size.
“I’m fine. I’ll just drag it up.”, replied Edward without looking back. “It will probably take a while to break the protection. If anything happens, just take Violet and rush inside the dungeon.”
Once he reached the entrance of the dungeon, he turned into his wolf form and rushed down the slope. With his increased agility and stealth capabilities, before the monsters noticed him, he was already gone from their reach.
With his increased agility and not having to fight the monsters, he reached the safe zone in less than ten minutes. Turning back into a human, he started walking down the stairs, but after going down just a few floors, he froze as he looked at the purple-black scaled dragon that was charging at him.
Edward cast his water film just in case, but there was no need because the dragon stopped his attack before its claw could hit Edward.
Tilting its head to the side, it blinked its red eyes innocently while looking at the human in front of it.
A chuckle escaped Edward’s lips as he said: “You finally got out of that egg, kiddo. You made me think I would have to wait for years.”
“Roar.” The dragon let out an adorable roar, like it didn’t like Edward’s words, before creeping toward him with caution. Edward didn’t react, curious about what the dragon would do. It might have been seven feet tall on all fours, but he knew it was just a baby dragon that didn’t get out of its shell for long.
The dragon brought its snout and sniffled around Edward a few times before its eyes shined and it brought its scaly head to rub it against Edward’s body.
Smiling slightly, Edward rubbed its head back and whispered: “Do you recognize me? Can you understand what I’m saying?”. It sounded dumb, but Edward got the feeling the dragon recognized him somehow. Seeing the confusion on its face after his questions, Edward got at least one of his answers. It didn’t understand human speech.
“Well, I’m happy I won’t have to carry the egg with me, but with the dragon not able to speak or understand me, it’s still a pain…”

“It won’t be a problem if I had the time, but I don’t. If we go out and it starts flying around, how long do you think it will be until someone spots it and the dragons find out?”
[If only you could increase its level…]
“Yeah…, but how the hell am I supposed to get a tablet for a baby dragon?”
With no way to increase its level, Edward played a bit more with it and motioned for it to follow as he started climbing back toward the first floor. The dragon might not have understood Edward, but it still followed nonetheless.
Just as Edward was about to exit the safe zone and climb the slope leading outside, the dragon hesitated and stopped right at the edge of the safe zone.
“There’s nothing for you to be afraid of. I can kill these monsters with ease.”, said Edward to the hesitating dragon, but to no avail. Heaving a sigh, Edward just continued walking up the slope while keeping an eye on the dragon.
The hesitation in its eyes only increased until, just as Edward was about to disappear out of its vision, it flew quickly after him and landed just behind him. Seeing a seven-foot dragon trying to hide behind a six feet human painted quite an amusing sight.
The return to the entrance took a lot longer this time since Edward had to deal with any monster that came close. The dragon was quite scared at the start, but as Edward easily took care of each monster with just a few water bullets, its confidence also increased.
Once they exited the first floor of the dungeon, the dragon fixed its big eyes on Violet and Minx, as did the girls. Edward was about to say something, but the dragon just bolted from his side and landed next to Minx. They sniffled each other for a while before the dragon once more started rubbing its head against Minx. Minx also responded the same way.
“Is this the dragon egg?”, asked Violet as she came next to Edward.
“Yeah. It seemed to have hatched while we were away.” Replied Edward with a frown.
“Isn’t that good?” asked Violet, noticing the frown on Edward’s face.
“I don’t know. It’s still young and it might do something reckless once we get outside. At least with the egg, we didn’t have to worry about that…” after thinking a bit more, Edward said: “I guess we’ll have to stay in here longer. We can’t run the risk of the dragon rushing off into the sky while we’re not paying attention.”
Now that they had another member, Edward decided to wait until the dragon could understand a few simple commands before they left the dungeon and started heading for Oasis.
Because the dragon was just a baby, it proved a lot harder than it did with Minx and, after three days, there were still no results. The more time Edward stayed in there, the more anxious he got.
On the evening of the fifth day, while he was outside hunting for some food, Edward spotted a group of dragons flying above him. Worried about what they might do, he rushed close to the dungeon entrance and monitored them from the shadow of some trees.
The dragons just flew past, heading south while scanning the ground for anything suspicious. Once they were all gone, Edward returned to the dungeon entrance and turned back into a human.
Seeing him come back with no food, Violet asked: “Did anything happen?”
Edward nodded and said: “A few dragons just flew right above up. We can assume they don’t know about this place, but it’s still worrisome. They appeared to be flying towards Oasis.”
Fixing his eyes on the baby dragon, he continued: “We might have not known how long it will take a dragon egg to hatch, but other dragons would. They must know it was about time for the egg to hatch and that’s why they started their search.”
Edward even thought that it might not have been Rave’s fault at all that the dragons descended from the north. They might have simply known that the dragon is about to hatch. Since there was a human with its mother in the north, they might have just started their search in the City of Ashes.
“What do we do now?” asked Violet.
Edward shook his head and said: “I don’t know. I initially hoped that Oasis would be safe, but the dragons that flew by were heading straight south. Maybe nowhere on this continent is safe anymore…”
“Why don’t we stay here? We can hunt until they get tired of looking for us and also increase our strength.” Said Minx from the side as she was playing with the dragon.
Edward thought about this as well, but he didn’t like the fact that if the dragons ever stumbled upon this place, they had no other way to get out.
‘There’s also Violet,…’ thought Edward as he looked at the pretty wolf girl that was smiling at him. ‘How can I make her live in this place?…’
A soft and warm hand grabbed Edward’s hand as Violet said: “I already told you I don’t mind it. As long as we’re together, I don’t care where we get to live. I enjoy spending time with you, Minx, and even the dragon.”
Edward sighed in resignation before turning toward Minx: “Alright, but if we’re going to stay deep in the dungeon, we’re going to need a lot of food. I need you to bring as many frozen animals as you can before we head down into the dungeon.”
Minx understood and rushed out of the dungeon. Edward would have gone with her as well, but someone had to stay by the dragon’s side to make sure it won’t do anything stupid like rushing out of the ground. Violet, of course, had no way of controlling the dragon, so while he knew the dragon would not hurt her, it also wouldn’t listen to her.
Once Minx returned with around ten beasts and animals, all frozen into cubes of ice, everyone started moving towards the debts of the dungeon. It was the first time Violet has even been inside a dungeon, so she kept looking around with interest the entire way down.
They also made a plan for their stay in the dungeon. Edward and Minx will hunt to increase their level while Violet will stay in the safe zone and try to school the young dragon. If their food would run out, Minx or Edward will head outside and hunt some more before bringing it back inside. With their ice magic, they could easily keep it frozen so it won’t go bad.
Edward also ended up telling Violet about Fenrir and the curse eventually, even introducing the two to each other. Edward was quite worried that Violet was going to look at him differently after she found out, but she was only overwhelmed by shame once she found out Fenrir could see them during their steamy nights.
Slowly, the group got used to living inside the dungeon and before they knew it, three whole years have passed.
