Volume 1: The Light

“We will begin with our lessons. First of all, Callus, do you know how magic happens?”

“How does magic happen…?”

“Magic is something that goes hand in hand with our daily lives. It’s inseparable from us.”

“But perhaps because magic is so familiar to us, that we have never really thought about the how magic happen.”

“I guess you could say that it’s the image of converting the magic power in our bodies into magic, right?”

“Hm, that is not wrong. However, it doesn’t hit the ‘essence’.”

“The essence?”

Master nodded and lit a light on his index finger and ran it through the empty space.

Letters made of light then appeared in the air. No blackboard was needed.

“In this world, there are invisible beings called spirits. Magic is the act of borrowing the power of spirits. For example, Fire Magic is done by borrowing power from Fire Spirits, and if it is Light Magic, it is done by borrowing power Light Spirits.”

“Then where does magic power come into play? Is it used when you ask a the spirits for a favor?”

“That’s a little different. Magic power is basically the compensation. Spirits like magic power, and humans borrow the spirits’ powers to invoke magic in exchange for the magic power.”

I don’t know if this is totally different from the magic I thought.

The image I had of a magician was that they’re an all-powerful being that’s able to do everything on their own. But magic can only be used when people works together with spirits.

“I heard that in the past days, people could see spirits. But now, they can’t because more and more people don’t believe in spirits.”

“Anyway, just remember that magic and spirits are inseparable.”

“I understand.”

I wonder what spirits look like.

Are they humanoids? Animals?

I want to see them.

“Normally, we start by finding out what element you’re attuned with but since we’re learning Light Magic, we’ll skip that step and start with learning Light Magic directly.”

“Is that okay. I feel like there’s something wrong…?”

“It is indeed as you said. The spirits are jealous creatures. They don’t like it when a person who has once possessed them befriends a spirit of another element.”

“For example, if a Water Spirit finds out that you are attuned in the Water Element, they would instantly gravitate to you. By then, the Light Spirits would no longer be attracted to you.”

“I see…”

I wonder if I could make a proper contract.

Not to mention that once I do it, other spirits would not be inclined in getting close to me. They’re basically like humans.

“So what do I have to do first?”

“You have to speak to the spirits in magic language. It’s what we call a spell. Each word of the spell has its own meaning. You should learn this slowly.”

“The first word I will teach you is *Rye*, which means light. Be sure to speak it clearly, otherwise the spirits will not be able to hear you.”

After properly explaining it to me, Master said, “Go on, try it.”

“Ra, rye!”

I said with trepidation.

Alas, nothing happened. Nothing in my body seems to glow.

“That’s normal, you can’t suddenly use magic,” Master said, “You will gradually get the hang of it as you repeat it dozens or hundreds of times.”

“But since you don’t have much time. I will give you a few hints.”

Master then brought his index finger in front of me and chanted, “Rye.”

The tip of his index finger then lit up.

“Here, try touching it.”

“Yes…”

The light was slightly warm and soothing.

This light was different from the light of a candle or a magic stone lamp. This is the light that the spirits are making.

“Remember this light and etch it into your body. The power of imagination is also essential for magic.”

“Then, when you have memorized it, ask the spirit to help you. You can say it out loud or just think. The spirits see everything.”

“I understand…, I will try it.”

Taking a deep breath, I concentrated.

Remember, the light that Master showed. I then put my right hand out in front and spoke to the spirit that should be near me.

“Rye.”

My heart suddenly jumped, and I felt a sensation of quickly flowing blood throughout my body.

My sight, hearing and touch… they were all sharpened and I can sense things much farther away.

Deep inside my body, I felt as if something that had been closed for a long time was slowly opening.

But…

“There’s no light.”

My hand was the same as usual, nothing had changed, just a normal right hand.

Well, I definitely felt something.

I was sure I felt something.

“It’s normal that you couldn’t use it. It takes a week even for those who have a good sense to be able to use magic in this way. Just take your time and try it again and again.”

Master then put his hand on my right chest and casted a Light Spell.

“The curse should remain quiet until tomorrow around noon. If it starts to hurt again, you can find me in my room.”

“Yes, thank you.”

With that, I bowed my head and Master also left the room.

I then realized that it was already dark outside. Time really flies when you’re concentrating, doesn’t it?

“Good night, Callus. Don’t stay up too late.”

“Yes, good night to you too, Master.”

And so the first day’s lesson came to an end.

After Master left the room, I turned off the light and went to bed early, so that I could work hard tomorrow.

However, just as I was about to go to bed, I noticed something.

The room, which should have been pitch-dark, was… slightly bright. But there is only one light switch, so how?

I looked around the room, searching for the light source.

Finally, I find out what it was.

No way!

It was my left hand that was illuminating the pitch-dark room.

It’s just the light was so faint that it could not be noticed when the room was lit.

Although the light was faint and unreliable, my left hand was certainly blessed by the spirits!
