Chapter 85:

New Year's Massacre

I ran, my feet hitting the ground, my blood pounding in my ears. Sadia and Scarlett were machines. They moved in ways I never thought possible for normal people, but then again...were they normal? I realized in that moment they were a world above me. No, entire realities.

"Now isn't the time for that..." I berated myself, my breathing heavy as I swiftly made my way through the park. There were gunshots, people screaming. I knew that with the two of them, Alana and Rosa would be safe. However, Cecelia was alone. Somewhere in all this, Cecelia was alone. "Alone..."

The words I said earlier tonight barreled through my thoughts. Everything she gave me....all the love, all the attention. Every single moment of my life in the past couple of months was thanks to her. I felt the world cracking. The seams bursting. "She has to be safe..."

My thoughts flickered between Alana and Cecelia. The two people I cared for and loved most in this world. Then, Scarlett's face flickered before me. Sadia and Rosa. They were back there, and I was running away. No, I was running towards her. That's what I had to believe, but where?

An iron taste began to coat my tongue as my lungs burned. I was torn between Alana and Cecelia. I felt like a part of my heart was ripped out as my feet made their decision. I could only hope Alana would forgive me.

People ran in fear, cowering behind stalls, but I ran. Chaos had erupted, with people running, shouting, crying. A little boy hunched in the middle of my path, crying for his parents. "I don't have time for that, I..." I caught the movement of two adults searching high and low, calling out a name I couldn't quite here.

"...Shit." Adjusting my footing, I made my way through the crowds. Everything was so noisy, and then...I was by the boy. Just a young kid, barely five. Kneeling down, I got his attention.

"Hey..." I breathed heavily, the first time I was able to take a breath, "Your parents are looking for you. I'll take you too them."

Giving him my best smile, I held out a hand to him. In his fear, his choices were maybe not the best as he grabbed ahold of my hand. Luckily, it was me that found him. With his arms wrapping around my neck, I lifted him up and ran.

Who I assumed were his parents. Jostled by the crowd, I did my best to run with this child in my arms. My lungs were near gone, my legs felt heavy, but there wasn't a choice. I wasn't going to let this child get trampled.

"Alex!" The couple yelled as they saw me approach, and at first, I was confused how they knew my name, but then I realized the coincidence. "Ha...what are the odds."

The kid shared me name, and a part of me had to laugh. Whether this was karma, or something else, I found it ironic. In a way, I was saving myself.

I was so close to them now. In a moment their son would be in their hands. Then, I saw red. My eyes went wide as the child yelled.

"Mama!" The boy screamed, reaching out.

A bullet had passed through her shoulder, knocking her to the ground. "Fuck!" Nothing could be worse than this moment. A child just saw their parent shot. I was separated from everyone because of my own stupidity and impulses.

With the boy bursting from my grip, he ran to his mother's side. His father right there with him. I stood, knocked back and forth by people running, keeping my footing by pure will. "What the hell is going on?" I watched the family, tears streaming down their face. "Why?"

It was just one, singular word that went through my head. Men were sweeping through the crowd, blades swinging at anyone in their way. The snow melted from the blood of people falling, mixing and turning into a sickening slush. My stomach churned, but I couldn't give in now. A blade raised to the child, and my leaden legs moved as I swallowed the bile wanting to come up.

With as much strength as I could, I body checked the man back. They fell to the ground, but quickly recovered and lunged towards me. It was the only thing I could do to protect them. The father flung himself over their child, and I flung put myself between them.

I don't know what went through my head. I just knew that I couldn't let this continue. "This is where I die...Cecelia..." As if called by my thoughts, a shot, louder than all the others, rang through the air. The man before ceased to exist. Their head blown completely off. I felt the churning of my stomach, but more than that was a wave of relief.

"Alex, what are you doing here?" It was Cecelia's voice, stern yet loving, as both me and the child looked towards her.

She was covered in blood. Each falling snowflake that landed on her turning red. Illuminated in the neon lights and falling snow, she stood regal. An army of armed guards flanking her as they moved through the area. Each shot felling one of the attackers.

"C-Cecelia..." Her name left my lips barely as a whisper.

"How...can she be so beautiful in this moment?" My legs carried me as I flung my arms around her. I had never held her so tightly before. Wrapping one arm around me, she held me close.

"Where's Sadia? Scarlett?" Cecelia asked, but then changed her tone to something a bit softer, "You thought I was in danger...didn't you?"

She sounded almost touched, amused. I didn't say anything. I simply held tighter, nodding.

"My love, you forget who I am," Looking up at her, I saw that smile that captivated me so long ago.

It held a confidence to it that brought me weak to my knees, and deadliness that froze the blood. As I watched, one of the men somehow got through the line of guards. None made a move to stop them as he made his way to Cecelia, for they knew.

Without batting an eye, she held me close and a single swing of her blade was all it took. Their head came free from their body, along with their raised arms. The spray of crimson decorated her face as she smiled that damn smile. Knowing that you're safe. Knowing that those who came for you would perish. "How could I forget...She's Cecelia..."

"We'll discuss your disobedience later," She teased, her fierce eyes flicking to me, "For now...dry those tears. We have trash to clean."

Realizing that the warmth running down my face was not blood, but my own tears. The world seemed to repair itself as I embraced her. Everything that I felt crashing down around me halted, rewinding as if it never fell.

Her army swept through the festival, clearing it of any hostiles. The mother of that boy was alive, attended by a medic who got to her immediately. We walked through the festival towards where I last left everyone.

"...You saved that boy," Cecelia said as we walked, speaking as if we were on a casual stroll.

"Y-Yeah..." I nodded sheepishly.

She kept a tight hold on my hand, but I didn't mind. Her blade found no resistance to any that got close. Her eyes seemed to glow as we walked, and I wondered for the first time if she had cybernetics. It would explain a lot of how she, Scarlett, and even Sadia fought. Then again, how did no one else fight with the same ferocity? I was sure they had cybernetics. "A question to ask another time..."

"Honestly...Selfless to the end," Cecelia spoke lovingly, but a sense of sadness lay underneath, "Just like back then..."

"Cecelia..." Squeezing her hand, I felt suddenly sheepish, "I just...acted."

"It's how you are," She said, her eyes glancing at me from the side, "One of many reasons I love you, but...I can't do that if you're dead."

Her eyes took on a deadly obsessiveness.

"I-I'm sorry..." Blushing, I pressed myself closer to her, "I just...you were all alone."

"...Don't start acting all cute," She warned playfully, "You're still in trouble."

"Y-Yes ma'am," I replied back playfully sheepish.
