Chapter 7: the chase

 

…Anna and Dan…

"Shit. Next time we need bait for a massive monster bear, remind me to tell Sam he's up. Fuck!" Anna yells as she and Dan dodge another branch thrown forward from the beast charging form behind them. "Yeah I'll so that if we manage to survive THIS! oh god!" Daniel says back before dodging another branch dislodged from its tree and launched forward at them impaling another tree crotch level. As they are running they can hear Barry and Sam shooting and harassing the bear. 

As they enter the clearing with the now smoldering remains of the chopper Anna hears the bear cry out in agony and start to thrash around it, no longer moving towards them instead tearing the ground and trees around it apart. As it's doing that she sees Barry come out of the trees to the left of the bear followed by Sam from the right. 

"Looks like you guys got it good." Anna says as they get close. "Yeah, got its other eye.  Now all it has is hearing and smell which shouldn't be a problem.", Barry says then looks over at Sam as they keep jogging past her to the chopper. "Alright now that it's got no eyes we should be able to get it to impale itself easily enough, the question is if one of the chopper blades, going to work." Sam nods towards the chopper as they start to get closer the bear's thrashing slows then stops as the creature starts to sniff the air before locking on to their scents and turning towards them.

As Sam gets closer to the chopper he can't help but think their in luck one of the blades appears to have been mostly undamaged, "Alright looks like luck is on our side Sam but how do we get the bear over here?" Dan asks right as the bear let's loose another massive roar and starts to run towards them. Sam, Barry and Anna all look at Dan with raised eyebrows. " What? It was a valid question, ok."  "Well it knows we are here now we need to get it running headfirst into the blade. Barry behind the chopper aim for its head. Dan, Anna take the flanks. I'll be right here. We need to make sure it goes straight at the blade and I'm on my last mp5 mag so I'll play bait."  

Sam lays out his plan and backs up under the blade and starts to yell and slam the butt of his mp5 against the smoldering metal of the chopper. The bear's head locks onto him and starts to pick up speed as Anna and Dan take up their positions ready to put the rest of their ammo into making this beast dead. Barry readies his rifle preparing to put rounds into its eye sockets.  

As the bear charges forward eating up the 50 yards between them Sam sees something happening to it that makes him freeze up his noise making, it brings its head down like a rhino preparing to impale the wreckage and him with its bloody horns. "Oh shit!" He yells before jumping out of the way, just in time as where he had been standing the bear's horns now impale the chopper. As it tears its head free the creature's horns further disfiguring the chopper. As it lumbers looks around the sounds of liquid splashing can be heard followed by a low roar as the massive beast lumbers forward then crashes to the ground kicking up dust, leaves, and blood all over the place. 

 

"Is it dead?" Is the first thing Anna Barry and Dan ask as they close around their commanding Officer and the fallen beast. 

"I'm not sure but I know this much, we need to figure out where the hell this thing came from." Sam says as Barry moves closer to the fallen bear, looking at it the blade of the chopper can be seen sticking out of the creature's chest, "looks like the blade went through its heart boss man. It was a strong son of a bitch but I don't know anything that can survive a chunk of metal through the heart.".

"Either way I don't intend on taking any chances. Anna put a slug through its head." 

She nodes and levels the 12 gauge with its skull as Barry moves out of the way then pulls the trigger opening the bear's head with a shotgun slug.  "Alright now it's definitely dead." Anna says as she walks back over with Barry. "OK guys now that the monster bear is dead and no longer trying to eat us. It's time to figure out what we are supposed to do now and we need to find Nate…" "Already found him."  Dan says as Sam starts to look around the clearing, getting everyone's attention as they look over at him as he stands up over what might have been an entire body once holding a set of burnt dog tags. "Nathaniel H. Carson" He says as he reads the tags and tosses them to Barry as he gets closer, "A good man and an even better pilot." Barry says as he looks down at them he goes to hand them to Sam but he closes Barry's hand around them, "You knew him better than me. You're the one who should hold them." As Sam goes to walk away Anna walks up and pulls out the ID badge she and Barry found earlier, "You may want to see this Sam, we found it in  the breast pocket of a torn up lab coat." She says as she hands it to Sam. "I think we need to find whoever this is or was and where this damn place Noir has near here and….."  As Sam says this, the sound of something massive moving draws his attention to the opposite side of the clearing. A massive figure appears to them in the form of a large humanoid figure who steps into the clearing and roars at them. Barry puts a round into its head but all that happens is its head slowly rotates back to them and the wound heals before their eyes. "Boss man! I think we should head for the cabin." 

Barry says as he starts to slowly back towards the trees keeping his eyes on the massive thing staring at him. "Yeah I think 4 walls and a roof are a good idea. Move now!" Sam yells as the creature tears a 20 foot tree out of the ground and throws it at them. Just as Sam, Anna, Barry and Dan start to run, the tree crashes into the ground leaving a gouge in the earth with branches and limbs exploding and tearing up more of the earth around it. Dan barely moves out of the way as a branch is embedded into the dirt next to where he was standing.                The creatures lumbering form moves to the bear reaches down and pulls the chopper blade from its chest heating it like a greatsword onto one shoulder before it starts to walk forward with each stride picking up speed in seconds reaching the spot where the alpha Team entered the forest. Raising the sword and swinging ahead it cleaves a huge swath through the forest, lopping trees in half and making room to chase after them. 

"Did you see that! The damn thing is cleaving trees wider than me in half twelve at a damn time how the fuck are we supposed to deal with that!?" Dan yells from the back "less talking more hauling ass Dan." Barry yells back to him as he jumps over a tree stump, closely followed by Anna then by Sam and Dan as he starts to really put foot to earth. 

The sounds of the giant man cutting trees down like an murderous Paul Bunyan is what fuels their run to the old wooden mansion.

As they run Barry begins to recognize their locale and then they are on the path that he and Anna had been on when they found the ID badge only there's something new here, a half devoured body of one of their own Tony  C. Hart. As they reach the spot Barry and the rest of the team slow down as they see his body with his trademark T.H. on his vest. "He wasn't here the first time we were here." Barry says as he kneels down next to Tony's body, "we can't stay to bury him. I'm sorry Barry, Anna. If that thing catches us here there won't be anything left to bury. How far from the mansion are we?" "Not far just over the next hill and we should hit the road there but I think we lost that giant whatever the hell it was." As Anna finishes this statement Dan and Sam watch a tree soar through the air over them. "No I don't think it has. MOVE!". 

…Security room…

"There heading for the cabin doctor should we lock the doors and keep them out?" The officer asks Dr Rasik as they watch the alpha team run for the cabin through the security cameras. "No, keep the doors open, let's see if they can take care of a few of the subjects. The more they kill, the easier it'll be for us to escape. Unlock the cabin doors hopefully they are skilled enough to kill these mutations that have us locked in here." 

"What about the subject on floor 26 are we going to do nothing about him he could be a danger to us?" She asks him, " I doubt he'll be worried about us. He's got subject 10 to deal with after all and what Noir did to that one. I'd be happy if subject 26 could deal with him before he gets any further up in floors." As He says this the monitors switch to subject 10 ramming through a wall and impaling another scientist who thought the room could save them from the horrors unleashed. "I don't think subject 26 can kill him doctor, he's a monstrosity created by your predecessors designed to slaughter his enemies." The officer says. "Officer, what's your name?" Rasik asks her. "Security officer Tina DeSoto." "Well Tina I'd say if 26 can't kill 10 then we can expect to die before dawn." He says as he switches the camera to the front door to the cabin as the alpha team runs full tilt at it, the big guy slamming the door open and funneling the rest of the team into the main hall. "Let's see what these special operations teams are made of. I hope they're half as good as they claim or they won't last long!".
