Chapter 6: The Bird and The Bear

…in the trees above Anna and Barry…

A large bird-like figure sits and watches 2 figures run into the distance. 

It's appearance would be remarkably similar to a velociraptor only if it wasn't a fossil and stood about 5feet tall with wings to match, it's eyes look humanoid and as it watches them run off towards the fireball, it looks down to its left claw where what's left of a human torso wearing the tattered remains of a woodgrove police department bulletproof vest with the initials T.H. It looks back to where Anna and Barry had been, it opens its beak and in a very strong and rumbly baritone and raspy voice says one word, "h..hhu….Humannnn…?".

Then tilts its head seeming to decide if that's correct or not, deciding it is nods and jumps into the air swooping down and landing on the ground carefully depositing what's left of the body on the ground before leaping up and flapping into the air and back towards the mountains in the distance.

 

…East side of the chopper's location, 

Dan and Sam….

 

"Jesus Christ! What the hell is that thing?" Dan whispers to Sam as they are perched just on the outside of the clearing looking at what was the chopper but is now a ball of flames, and is now bent into a U shape and watching what could only be a bear out of nightmares. This bear is at least 11foot tall and must have eaten all of its siblings it's limbs are easily the thickness of Barry's torso and probably weighs twice as much with how the muscles ripples and flex under the matted and tar colored fur, it's head looks like a normal bear but is big enough that Sam has no doubt it could probably eat him or Daniel in 2 bites, but what makes it weirder is not just the size of it but it has horns growing out of its head just above its eyes, there at least a foot long and look like a mix between elephant tusks and a rhinoceros horn. Each of its paws are the size of a truck tire and are tipped with claws that look serrated and must be at the very least 11inches long. 

 

"Ya know Dan if I had a damn clue myself I'd tell you. But I don't.  That," Sam says pointing at the bear, "is a new one for me. I've never seen a bear that big let alone with horns on its head!" He responded as he watched the bear sniff around the wreckage of the chopper, he couldn't help but wonder 'where the hell did something like this crawl out from?' Daniel shifts slightly due to his nerves being on edge causing a branch to snap, and Sam watches as the bear's head swings around towards them, “Daniel please tell me that wasn't you?” Sam says as the bears eyes lock in on their position, as he says this Daniel can be heard silently swearing to himself silently  “RAAAA WWWRRR OOOOOOOO”  “Fuck! It sees us… RUUUUNNN.!!!” "Shit, shit, shit….. SHIIITTT!" Daniel yells as he starts to empty his mag into the bear's face, enraging it as it tears the dirt up running at them. "Oh Shit!"

 

…Barry and Anna 100ft behind Sam and Dan…

“Barry, did you hear that something broke a branch ahead of us?” 

As Anna says this the sound of a massive roar is heard followed by the sound of a lot of cussing and more broken branches and what sounds like a tank rolling through the forest. Anna levels her shotgun aiming straight ahead at the sounds coming their way. As she readies herself to blow a hole through something Barry's radio comes to life with Sam and Daniel's voices, then Anna hears them coming from in front of her the same direction she's hearing massive limbs breaking and trees being torn apart accompanied by the sounds of an MP5 and an M4. "Fuck, fuck, fuck, it's just eating the damn rounds Sam." Dan's voice yells followed by a massive bear-like roar. "I can fucking see that Dan! Damn it, save your ammo. These things we are using ain't gonna cut it with that damn monster!" Sam yells back as they break through into a clearing on the opposite side they see Barry's massive figure with Anna at his side with their guns leveled even with Sam and Dan's heads. "What the hell are you 2 running from?" Barry's gruff voice says through the radio. "Something that needs a large fucking Bullet in its head!" Dan yells, forgetting that he has a radio in his adrenaline fueled state, Sam says to them, "Raise your aim higher this thing is far bigger than us. Way fucking bigger." Unlike Dan he's able to use his radio as they eat up the space between themselves and Anna and Barry's position. 

As they get over three quarters of the way to Barry's position the trees behind them explode and through the broken limbs and debris Barry and Anna finally see what's got their newbie and commander running for their lives. "What the fuck is that thing!!?" Anna and Barry yell out as they see this massive bear with horns staring them down. The bear standing at the opposite edge of the clearing stops its massive frame tearing up the earth and creating a cloud of dirt. As Dan and Sam finally reach Barry and Anna they turn back and see it standing there, teeth bared to the moonlight, horns gleaming blood red. The bear growls loudly and starts to claw up the earth, tearing huge gouges into the dirt, each gouge going a foot deep into the earth, making the ground look like a freshly cultivated field. "Sam, is that what flipped the car down off the road?" Barry asks in a low voice as he keeps his rifle aimed at the bear's eyes, figuring if it can't see it'll be easier to deal with. "I think so Barry, it took out the chopper as well.", Sam replies watching the beast for any sudden moves towards them. "Why the fuck isn't it charging us Sam? If it tore the chopper up, why is it just letting us sit here and turning the earth into a damn hay field with its damn meat cleavers? "Anna asks as she watches the bear stare at them. 

All that can be heard from Daniel is the sounds of his m4 getting a fresh magazine slammed home into it.

As they level all their weapons at the beast it starts to run forward at first at a slow lumbering gait then picking up speed as its mass starts to carry it forward. Barry reacts first by firing one round into its left eye and is rewarded with a squishy pop as its eye explodes but that's all that happens as the bear keeps coming forward. Anna unloads 2 rounds of 12 gauge slugs onto its chest only to watch the rounds impact then fall to the ground unable to penetrate its dense fur, followed by Dan and Sam's full auto fire from their rifle and submachine gun. As the bear gets closer and doesn't slow down, Barry and Sam jump out of the way to the right as Anna and Dan go left just barely dodging the bear as it plows through the trees behind them, bowling them over leveling the forest for about 30 yards before finally slowing down to a stop, turning around slowly with bits of tree trunks and branches falling off its fur except for a rather large branch that lodged into its hide over its left front shoulder. Sam and Barry both take note that it takes the massive beast a second to find them again with its one eye looking around for them before finding Barry and Sam but not noticing Dan and Anna on its left side as they pump another 2 shots of shotgun and 14 rounds of m4 into its left side next to the branch sticking out of its shoulder. Unfortunately they don't make the creature bleed but it does help enrage it further as it brings its massive head around biting ahold of the branch and tearing it out and throwing it at Barry and Sam before rounding on Dan and Anna. As Sam and Barry duck under the branch Sam yells, "take it back to the chopper if we can get it running full tilt into one of the blades maybe we can get it to impale itself."  Anna and Dan don't respond with words instead they respond with actions as Anna put a round into its wounded shoulder and Dan yells at it, "Come on you ugly mother fucker, we're right here come and get it." Before he and Anna start sprinting towards the flames of the fallen chopper with a massive and very angry bear hot on their heels. "Barry, let's see if we can set up and take out its other eye. If we blind it entirely this will hopefully make it easier to kill or at the very least make it harder for the damn thing to kill us." Sam says as he gets up ejecting the now empty mag out of his mp5 and locking another in. Barry nods, "You got it boss man. Let's bag us a world trophy." As they start to take off in pursuit of the bear.
