Loukas let out a soft sigh as he stamped the thick book with its correct labelling. He picked it up and placed it aside to be sorted away in the academic section of the university's library.

A very difficult section for a casual reader such as himself, all those densely packed paragraphs on subjects he doubted he would ever understand. He heavily preferred to listen to someone reading his textbooks via audio rather than search through the tightly packed sea of black on white text. He could find no stories in such things, nor the prize of a happily ever after.

He glanced up at the clock on the wall to note he still had a few hours to spare and the room was mostly filled with murmurs and the occasional page-turning. Other than that, there was almost no one around.

Loukas browsed through the little collection of returned books from the morning shift and read the various covers and titles.

Some were dull, with a simple single colour cover with the title written in gold.

Others were more generic, with familiar photographic snake imagery which Loukas found a bit too intimidating for his tastes.

Others, more from the indie scene, had beautifully illustrated covers in oil paints, watercolours or the occasional digital artistry. Albeit those kinds of books were rare these days, with the extremely strict crackdown on any... Deviant literature.

He knew his mother was happy about that, so...

It probably was not all bad.

Still, he wondered about that book called, 'The Omega's Burning Heat.' It had such a pretty watercolour illustration and he heard it was a cute romance from some girls at his school.

Maybe it was too violent?

Hmm...

As the Wind Blows,’ by Hewitt Travis, looked promising, with a cute photograph of a couple holding hands in a flower field. It may be a little cheesy, with the plot being about the love interest dying of a mysterious chronic illness and then getting better throughout the story.

Loukas enjoyed such cheesy plots and felt excited when reading them.

The boy got up and scanned the room. It was a slow Wednesday with most students, either in class or not the type to bother with the library resources at all. Hence, all that he could hear was the occasional turning of pages from particularly studious seniors and the whirling sound of the ceiling fan.

Not that Loukas minded. He picked this job for a reason, after all. When too much happens at once, he gets too… Worked up.

He did not deserve other positions offered to him, anyway.

Deep down he knew it was only because he was his parents' son.

Loukas picked up the book and saw inside between the cover and blank page a pink letter that smelled of an eye-watering strawberry and lemon perfume.

He…

Winced at the realisation that a girl may have left that for him, deliberately. This was not the first time he had got letters like that, but...

They would not like him once they got to know him, anyway.

“I… might have to ignore it….” Loukas bit down on his finger as he clutched his pendant. The feeling of the cool metallic gold, tipped at the end with a sharp piece of bone was a soothing sensation against his skin.

The sound of sneakers squeaking across polished wooden floors had Loukas looking up from the book.

He moved his gaze to what he thought was a student, albeit a bit… Out there compared to the usual types on campus.

He wore a jacket over a tank top all in an eye-bleeding assortment of colours, complete with a picture of multiple ladies with a… particular expression on their faces. His legs were in the shortest shorts he had ever seen that hugged his butt and showed off their plump curves, a contrast to his rail-thin body. Upon his feet were a pair of flashy light-up sneakers, all complimented with a look of boredom as he walked past him and headed straight to the computers.

Loukas could not help but stare as he noticed the tools that the man had taken out and the odd, somewhat older air to him.

He must have come to fix the computers, maybe a lot of computer repairmen dress like that?

Loukas eyed the short man. Greyish-white hair flowed from his scalp down his back, an unusual colour that contrasted with the deep russet-brown of his skin. So much deeper in tone than Loukas’ own that he could not help but allow his eyes to trace over his hyper-focused face, marvelling at the occasional lighter patches. A smooth expanse of beautiful skin.

He was an attr—

He was nice to look at.

The flamboyant man snapped his head in his direction with a smirk and a sharp glare, which startled Loukas.

“You want something, Red-eye?”

Loukas shook his head as he felt hyper-aware of his own unusual features, “Ah.. um... I… n-... no. S-s-sorry…”

“Yeah, of course, you’re sorry, bean pole. Next time you wanna stare, pay for it.” The man stuck out his tongue at Loukas, who could not help but blush at embarrassing himself.

“I-I was. No, I was I wasn’t I…”

“I-I wa-wa, I don't have time for this,” the other mocked.

Maybe he was wrong about the little guy being much older.

Thankfully, the repairman returned his fixation to the computers as his eyes regained that bright sparkle of before.

“I should focus on something else and not bother him,” Loukas thought to himself as he looked into the library's emails just to feign being busy.

It seemed the little mechanic was more wrapped up in his work than he thought, as he paid Loukas no attention after the confrontation, which was preferable. The clacking of keys and clicks from the mouse was all that came out of him.

Loukas groaned as he found that his computer screen froze as he checked the emails.

“Hmm, I thought these were new,” Loukas thought in annoyance.

The screen eventually unfroze and then redirected him to a site that made him fall out of his chair in shock.

“What the-” Loukas started as upon his screen was now a shock site of various people doing extreme acts of brutality on themselves in some sort of competition.

From basic cuttings to the removal of limbs and… other parts.

It was all obviously fake with one clip being a guy cutting into a sausage pretending it was... A certain body part.

Disappointin-

Loukas shoved that thought into the darkest part inside of him.

He was stunned, scared and worst of all—

Behind him, he heard a wheezy laugh.

“HAHAHA, OOOOh, you should have seen the look on your face. Oh my God, priceless.”

This guy...
