Chapter 54: Field Trip

Seven months and three weeks before the tournament...

"Quickly you guys hurry!!" Alice said excitedly with Layla and Clara hurriedly chasing after her.

"Why are you so fast??" Clara panted and desperately tried to not lose Alice.

"Alice's definitely built differently..." Layla groaned.

"We have to be quick or else there's too... many... people..." Alice stopped and she stared at the Pokestore with disbelief. When Layla and Clara caught up, their eyes also widened with horror.

Outside the Pokestore, hundreds of people were seen lining up, forming a large queue across the street. People could be seen exiting holding their own Pokedex and the girls must assume that they were all participating in the tournament.

"There are so many people..." Clara mumbled.

They felt nervous and dizzy just from seeing the number of participants. Alice slapped her cheeks and cheered: "Alright! Think positively, that means we can have a lot of battles!"

"But what do we do now? We obviously can't sign up today," Clara said.

"We can still enter the shop though, maybe Deoxys could help us out?" Layla suggested.

They entered the store that was crowded with people. The three felt that their eyes were playing with them because there were multiple Deoxys tending to the customers. One of the Deoxys saw the trio and gestured them to the counter.

"Good morning," Deoxys greeted.

"Um, why are there so many Deoxys?" Layla asked.

"They are mere clones of myself," Deoxys explained, and under the questioning gaze of the girls, the pokemon added: "I'm the real one,"

Alice observed Deoxys's clones and she noticed that the clones seemed to be paler and duller than the usual shopkeeper. Their motions also seemed to be more clanky like a doll.

"So I assume that you three are here to sign up for the tournament?" Deoxys asked.

"Eh, can you help us out!?" Clara exclaimed with hopefulness.

"Unfortunately, I can't give you guys special privileges so you have to patiently wait," Deoxys answered.

The three nodded in understanding: "Then could we use your field to train?" Alice said in a hopeful tone.

"That also won't be possible, the training field has been fully booked for the week," Deoxys replied.

"Then is there anything we could do?" Clara asked.

Deoxys grasped its chin: "You could explore outside the kingdom?"

"But isn't that dangerous?" Layla said nervously.

"With the recent arrival of Pokemon, the monster population has been gradually decreasing as the species battled for territory. Outside of Arde's walls are usually safe from monsters, you could explore there and maybe capture some pokemon for your team." Deoxys explained.

A map appeared in Deoxys's hand, the map began to levitate and opened in midair: "Huh the map looked very different than the one I remember." Alice muttered.

"That's correct, the landscape has changed significantly, new mountains, rivers, and even volcanoes are created to fit the condition for many types of pokemon,"

"I recommend exploring here," Deoxys suggested and pointed at an area where there was a forest and a large lake.

"That sounds fun! However, we can't freely leave the kingdom anymore. For safety, we needed to be at least Silver Rank in strength or have Gold Adventurers escorting us." Layla explained, "Also from the looks of it, the location is also very far away, we won't get there in time!"

"There's nothing to worry about, I can arrange everything for you," Deoxys answered and their eyes lit up, "However, there is only one condition,"

"Sure! Anything!!" Alice agreed without any hesitation.

An hour later...

Alice, Layla, and Clara trudge through the rough path of the jungle. Their body ached, and trudging through a deep jungle was much harder than they expected. Luckily, they have encountered no monsters yet, however, it would be better if the stress that the girls were feeling from the two figures before them.

"Come on let's go let's go!" Saphir laughed.

"Big sisters quickly!" Rubie urged and chased after her brother

"Hey, Alice are you sure this is really okay?" Clara asked worriedly.

The condition that they agreed to was that they would be able to bring Rubie and Saphir along. Deoxys explained that it's good for the children to go outside once in a while and the pokemon felt guilty for leaving them in the house all the time. In return, Deoxys could arrange an escort for them and also teleport them close to the suggested location before picking them up after some time.

When Layla asked about the obvious risk of this but Deoxys assured her that Rubie and Saphir will be very safe. However, they still couldn't be relieved from the intense pressure Deoxys have given them, so their vigilance was on overdrive, ensuring the children were out of harm.

"Hey um, what would you two do if there were monsters?" Layla suddenly asked Rubie and Saphir.

The children stopped and glanced at Layla. Rubie sat down and Saphir cutely dug through her backpack: "Mommy said that if there was danger, we should open this," He said and showed them a Pokeball.

The Pokeball seemed normal other than the extreme cracks and damages on the device. It was like the ball couldn't contain the monstrosity that resides within. Alice, Layla, and Clara all wanted to ask about what was inside that ominous Pokeball but restrained themselves.

"Oh also, mommy gave us this magical necklace, she said it would protect us," Rubie said.

"Auntie Violetta will keep us safe as well!" Saphir added.

"Of course young master," A voice responded in the back, frightening the trio.

They forgot that Deoxys have assigned an escort for them, that's how quiet Violetta was. The girls were originally wary of the mysterious woman but since the children trust her, they should as well. Alice estimated that they have been walking for an hour now and that the lake wasn't that far away. They have seen many different pokemon but none of them felt like they wanted to add to their team.

"Phew, let's take a break here," Layla declared when they reached a clearing with the warm sun radiating onto the lush green grass.

They all happily sat down and took out their packed rations. Rubie and Saphir dug through their small bags and each grabbed their own small lunchbox. They opened the box, revealing beautifully stacked sandwiches. Rubie and Saphir squealed excitedly and stuffed the sandwiches into their mouths.

The girls glanced at the children's food before staring at their beef jerky and plain water. They sighed and suddenly felt a loss of appetite.

"Huh, wait did you hear that?" Clara asked and stood up. She thought that she have heard a faint cry of an animal.

"What are you talking about? I didn't hear anything?" Alice replied.

Clara was silent and the sound was getting louder. Before the others could react, Clara ran towards the noise.
