“Hit me.” said Hiyori, gulping loudly, ready with whatever was going to come out from Everlong’s mouth.
“As I thought, the hospital is clean. You were already afflicted with it before you got in. The accident… I tracked down the parties involved, checked their records before and after. The only suspicious person was the one who rammed your parents’ car from the back. Yet before that accident there was nothing. He was an experienced driver, a normal, good citizen, without any prior records of even misbehaving! Going by the medical records he smashed into yours because he had a stroke behind the wheel. A freak accident of nature.”
“I see…” said, lowering her head.
“His life was also in danger for months but he had a full recovery. For the injuries that is, not from the mental trauma. The weight of it haunted him for years before he took his own life in the end.”
“I did not know that…!” said, like if she had to defend herself, grabbing onto her own chest but Everlong just raised his hand.
“Relax. Not your fault. None of this was, I’ll say it now. So, I tracked down his grave, dig him up to examine his corpse.”
“What?!” gawked, not expecting something like this.
“Routine thing, I did it so many times I lost count!” waved it away, like it was nothing. “There was a small residue, a faint aura, the mark of the same spirit that is attached itself to you.”
“It was… its doing?!” gasped audibly at what she was hearing.
“The accident? Yes. I am sure of it! So I went and checked the trucks’ past and the drivers’ records of who T-boned your parents’ car. He is clean. He suffered similarly as the one who pushed you all before it, but he recovered from it. And I mean mentally.” explained it, standing up, and picking out a paper bag from under his table which was filled with sandwiches from a vending machine. As he was talking he opened them up, placing them before Hiyori who as soon as she smelled them, realized how hungry she was. “All three are yours. Eat them.” smiled a little
“T-thanks…” murmured, taking one up with the tuna paste in it, starting to munch, still almost breaking down in tears because the taste was not going away and she could enjoy it all the way through it. “How… Did you do this so quickly?” asked, already grabbing towards the second sandwich.
“The Imperium of the Rising Sun keeps records of everything! For some it is a bureaucracy hellhole, for me it is the best place for data! Your archives are dating back hundreds and thousands of years!” chuckled, leaning against his table “Even the bombings in the Great War couldn’t destroy all the archives so it is much more easy to dig something up here, then let’s say in the United Colonies of America, Albionia or in the Reich, especially the latter as everything is under five layers of security clearances. The only place that can rival it are the vaults in the Dynasty of the Ancients in the mainland. But those are guarded more strictly than the Reich’s so… forget it!” Hiyori was listening intently to every word of his, already stuffing the third sandwich into her mouth.
“Did you live in those places?”
“Yeah.” answered with a smile “If I must I can contact my old acquaintances if need to but anyway! We veered off of topic here! If I need data here, it is easy to get with good connections! So in the past 36 hours I quickly gathered up everything about you that I needed!”
“36… hours?!” gulped down the last bite, almost choking on it.
“Yeah, you were out completely, If I wanted to molest you I could have done it easily.”

“Eh?!” flinched, quickly patting herself down, opening her pants, looking into it before she let out a sigh to Everlong’s big surprise.
“It was a joke.” said with a flat tone.
“Oh! Ohhh… ahaha… yeah, true… ahaha, who would do that to someone like me… ehehe…” laughed with a hollow voice, averting her eyes, only getting a head shake from Everlong.
“Let’s focus on the problem here!” said, scratching his throat. “Your curse was in effect already when you were in the car. So for next I tracked down your grandparents old home you were supposed to go to. That is going to be our next place to visit. If it is a dead end, we go even further back! To your old high school.”
“Wait… we?” blinked, finally catching on to his wordings.
“Yes, I will need you there, it is your curse and it is connected to you. If I go alone it would be like fumbling in the dark. This will make it much easier!”
“I… see…” said, falling silent, somehow terrified from the idea of leaving the office. Going back to how it was before? With the new knowledge in her head? No. Impossible. She was sure that if she had to go back to her life from a few days before, she was going to end it there and then!
“You don’t need to make that face!” pushed himself away from his desk, taking out a cigarette from his pocket, giving one to her too “Until today I solved every case I took up.” said to her, walking before the window, opening it, enjoying the cold air rushing in, blowing the rain on his face “Damn I love this kind of weather!” smiled, blowing smoke out from his nose.
“That is… reassuring.” gulped, standing up, trying to gather her strength because as soon as Everlong opened the window, she almost dropped the cigarette into her own lap, afraid that the demon would jump on her instantly, rushing in from the darkness. “How much is it going to cost me?” asked, raising her trembling hand to her own lips, watching the tall man’s back.
“Nothing.” replied calmly “I’m not doing this for money.”
“Really?” blinked, unable to truly believe his words. “What, are you a saint? Out here, fighting evil for the benefit of all?” joked with a clear, deeply sarcastic voice, unable to hold it back. Even when she finished saying it, she couldn’t help but stutter and tried to say “sorry” immediately. Yet Everlong just laughed, looking back at her.
“Good one! No. I’m not that noble. I do this because that is part of my contract. I have no say in this!”
“Contract? With the state? Is it something like that? Well… it is logical that those in power have knowledge about the paranormal…” murmured, finding logic in it but Everlong just smiled, not correcting her.
“You could say that!” sighed, putting out his cigarette “When you are ready let’s go! Your old folks’ house is unoccupied, marked for demolition soon as a new parking lot is going to be built there soon!”
