“I see.” nodded Everlong, leaning back from taking notes so far, tapping on the table with his pencil.

“...” Hiyori had no more to say as she was lost in watching herself in the reflection of the sippet of whiskey, remaining in her glass. The thing that brought her out from the trance she found herself, while telling the memory of that day to Everlong, was the ash, landing on her thighs from the end of her burning cigarette. She just blinked, realizing she was back in the office and for a moment even forgot how many years have passed since then.

“We can rule out the hospital.” spoke up Everlong, after a few minutes of silence “By then that thing had to be attached to you.”

“Is it from the… accident?” asked, licking her dried up lips with a faltering voice.

“Maybe.” replied, watching his own scribblings, thinking about multiple possible scenarios. “Do you know if anybody else died then?”

“No… I mean… nobody else…”

“Hm. I’m going to start from there. I’ll look up the incident itself, see what I can dig up from the official records! Then we are going to trace back your steps one by one!”

“Trace them… back?” asked, with a confused look as all of this was too much for her, not to mention that the alcohol coursing through her veins was showing its effects as she was already drunk.

“Yes. The accident could be one where you got it. But not the only possibility. The other things you mentioned are also under suspicion! It could be the death of your grandparents. There are hereditary curses in the world! The third is your school.”

“...” she had a lot of questions in her head, just by listening to Everlong's explanation but could not formulate any coherent sentences by now. Yet it seemed the man before her read her mind as he stood up, continuing.

“The thing that is haunting you, once was a human! It is transforming into a demon. You are, as I see it, its last meal before succeeding! It is wrong to even call it human anymore. Whatever it may once be, right now it lost most of its humanity, compassion or any positive, defining feature of what a human could be! What remains are malice, jealousy, hatred, anything that causes itself and others to feel miserable!”

“Can… can you…” tried to ask but her voice was weak and faltering with every vowel she spoke.

“I can help you.” smiled, walking before her, slowly taking out the glass she was squeezing so hard, it almost cracked and put out the cigarette from between her fingers. “It is my job to do this thing. Plus, you were guided to me.” shook his head, helping her to get out from the chair, leading her to his sofa. “For now, sleep. This place can be your sanctuary for now!”

“My pills!” said, sitting back up after he laid her down.

“Don’t need them!” pushed her back, placing the old blanket over her “Trust me!” patted her head “Just sleep…”

His calm and warm voice was like a spell, relaxing Hiyori’s body as she slowly, after a decade, fell asleep by herself, without any drugs. A true sleep, something she already forgot how relaxing it could be.

“Is she your new candidate for me?” stood up from next to Hiyori, lighting the fire up in the fireplace before putting on his leather coat, leaving the sleeping girl there, while he walked out, into the rain. “No, I don’t think so.” said, as if he was talking with somebody “Is the one attached to her yours or is it just an added bonus?” sighed, fixing his hat on his head, walking to the side of the building, getting into an old but well kept, silver ‘72 Sky-Line, driving away. “I knew you would say that!” snorted and for anyone else, watching him, they would think he was just talking with someone on a headset. “It is completely stuck to her, after being banished from my office it is still floating outside the windows, watching her! I did not know you were into saving souls, give it a few weeks and it would have finished her off!” said while looking back in the rear-view mirror. “Okay, okay. I get it, but you know what happened to my last partner you picked out. No… it was not MY fault! Well… yes, that is a good point. I’ll take note of it.” whispered, with a defeated voice as his car disappeared in the rainy streets.

….

…..

When Hiyori finally woke up, it was still, completely dark outside, the rain was heavily drumming on the windows, making the image of the outside world completely hazy. She sat up slowly on the couch, her black hair messy and multiple strands standing towards all directions. With one hand, Hiyori was still holding onto the blanket and with the other she wiped off the saliva from her lips before rubbing her tired eyes. It was an unfamiliar feeling, waking up by herself, by her own biological clock as she looked around, remembering where she was in the first place.

“I can’t believe it…” murmured, realizing the fact she did sleep, she did even dream a little and all of it was real!

“Good morning!” welcomed her Everlong’s voice, back to reality while he was sitting at his desk. There were new dossies laid out on it, as he read through them, making notes for himself. “Well, technically that is, as it is 4:20 right now.”

“‘Morning…” replied by reflex, climbing off, fixing her wrinkled clothes, gently slapping her own face twice to make sure this was really reality. “Is it… still out there?” asked, walking to the window, wiping off the damp on it with her sleeve, looking at the dark silhouettes of the city.

“Yes. Right now it looks right at you. It is on the other side of the window.”

“..!” she almost screamed out, tumbling backwards, falling over and with a loud bang her head bashed against the hard, wooden floor. “Ouchie…!” moaned, taking a sharp breath, sitting up, rubbing the back of her head.

“Don’t worry, it can’t come in without my permission. Not even if it turns into a demon.” said relaxedly, not bothering with the noise she was making, flipping through medical reports of hers from the time she spent in the hospital.

“Are you sure about that?” asked, standing back up, walking to the chair before his table, climbing into it, still holding her head with a wince.

“Yep.” nodded with a simple answer.

“Oh… okay. Um… what are those?” asked, trying to strike up some kind of conversation, feeling really weird and awkward right now… and not wanting to even think about what is outside, waiting for her!

“Your files. From more than a decade ago…” replied with a bit more serious voice, closing the document in his hands, looking up from it, right into her eyes. “I have some bad news.”
