Waking up the next morning, Conor could feel his muscles screaming in pain. His injuries from before were still fresh and the brutal hike afterward did nothing to alleviate the pain.
Not to mention, the herbal drink that damned woman made him drink last evening did not only taste as horrendous as he expected but also left a foul aftertaste in his mouth that lasted the entire night.
In the end, he couldn't sleep. Maybe he was still adjusting to this new environment but it was probably because he felt like shit.
Though, in return, heading over to the backyard at the brink of dawn this morning felt rather easy. He was dressed in plain white workout clothes he was given the night before while the smiling beauty, his new mother, wore tight clothes painted in black.
"First of all, drink this quickly before we start."
"..For real, again?" Conor complained as he looked at the familiar, bubbly violet herbal drink. He feared this moment happening but he wished it was just in his head.
"Yes, it is highly beneficial to your body, which is why you have to drink it every single day from now on."
"But it tastes like garbage!" Conor couldn't stand it. If that horrible taste in his mouth would accompany him every night, he wouldn't get a wink of sleep!
"Everything helpful to your body tastes like garbage, little bug, that's the reality. Now shut up and drink it, time is precious." Victoria shouted with crossed arms. In this house, her words were the law.
Feeling slightly intimidated, Conor gulped down the disgusting liquid quickly but not without making a mental note for the future. One day, he would pay her back tenfold.
"Alright then. With this finally out of the way, we can begin."
"Great.." Conor mumbled dejectedly to himself.
"Right now, the most important thing is to get your body into a better shape. Since it takes a long time to build and your starting point is so pitifully low, we will start today until you've gained some stamina. Then, you will receive home-schooling later on if your results are satisfactory."
"What exactly is considered to be satisfactory?"
Thinking for a moment, Victoria looked around, putting a finger to her chin. Then, something fell into her sight in the distance.
"Hmm, follow me."
Leaving the plain backyard, they soon arrived at the forest that surrounded the whole mansion until a big rock as tall as his bedroom appeared.
Stopping in front of it, Victoria lazily raised her hand.
"I guess, as the heir of the Hawkes family and my son, you should be able to do at least that much."
What happened next almost made Conor unable to believe his eyes. Victoria placed her flat hand horizontally against the boulder's surface before rapidly balling it into a fist, stretching her elbow, and flicking her wrist.
Then, a thunderous noise erupted as the boulder exploded into countless pieces. Raising his arms to protect his face, Conor thought he was dreaming. The boulder completely shattered.
What he's just seen was the famous One-Inch Punch, the classic martial arts move that always appeared in action movies. The result, however, was absolutely nuts.
'She destroyed that boulder. That woman actually destroyed that gigantic boulder. Is that even humanly possible? But she just did that!'
Conor's thoughts spiraled away as he now looked at Victoria differently. With admiration, uncertainty, and a little fear.
This taught him an important lesson and shaped his attitude for the future. He might be able to talk back at her every once in a while but he should never, ever, cross the line. Otherwise, he just might end up like that boulder. smashed to ground meat.
"Alright, you got that?"
"Yes, Ma'am."
Raising an eyebrow, Victoria nodded in satisfaction. It seems like the little bug finally learned some manners. As she thought, it only needs some motivation and a push in the right direction.
"Great, then let's go back." She declared.
When they arrived back at the mansion, Victoria picked up a blue piece of clothing and threw it to Conor. Intending to catch it, he spread out his arms when he suddenly noticed the clothing's weird flight path.

"Shit!"
The moment it touched his arms, Conor was suddenly pushed back by a huge force, making him fall on his butt.
For some odd reason, the piece of clothing was heavy. Extremely so.
"Urgh, what's this?"
"We're going to start with some light cardio. This weighted vest puts some weight on your body so you can actually train your muscles."
"O-Okay but seriously, how heavy is this?"
"Well, it's just 80 pounds since I needed to consider your weak physique."
"What? No way, that means I have to carry twice my weight!"
"Huh? I trained with heavier weights when I was younger than you, even without using inner force!"
"But still.."
Seeing Conor still making excuses, Veronica's eyebrow twitched in annoyance.
"Little bug, it seems like I need to beat some confidence into that lazy body of yours!"
On that day, Connor crossed the line for the first time.
...
Two months later.
Fall passed by quickly as the harsh winter neared Solaris, the biggest and most influential metropolis in the country.
The air became cold and the days shortened, urging the people to stay inside. At this moment, Conor could thoroughly relate to that emotion as he lay on the huge couch in the middle of the living room, enjoying his warm stay in the mansion.
His eyes shuffled eagerly through the magazine he held in the air, rapidly solving the crossword puzzles in his mind. He always liked these small pastimes to keep his mind fit.
It was a habit that formed out of his strong desire for knowledge. In the orphanage, learning was a privilege.
Meanwhile, a stunning beauty stood by the large curtain window, looking over at Conor with a dark face. She didn't like what she was saying.
Normally, they would be outside. Her chasing that little bug through the entire forest, making him climb up some mountain wall, or evading all the deadly traps she placed tediously all over the place.
Unfortunately, it was snowing heavily outside. Ten out of ten times she just would have gone through the training anyway but Conor just had to strain his ankle two days prior. Coupled with the rough terrain of the mountains, Victoria let him play inside, for now.
Impatiently tapping her fingers against her crossed arms, Victoria continued her cold stare at Connor. After two months he gained some weight after getting the nutritious food he so desperately needed.
His face even got some of that infamous baby fat, making him look rather cute. Of course, there's no way she would ever tell him that. That little bug was already mischievous enough, so no need to push his ego.
Time passed while the idyllic atmosphere continued. At least, idyllic on one side and frosty on the other. Even the maids left to escape the suffocating room.
Then, after a few hours passed, the light in the room suddenly got brighter. Victoria turned around, seeing exactly what she hoped for.
The clouds cleared up as the shining sun appeared in the light blue sky.
Showing a manic smile on her face, Victoria turned around.
"Little bug, I've got some work for you to do."
