Chapter 2: Chapter 01 – Happy Glitched Birthday

The transporter technology have been hailed as one of the greatest technology in connecting people, where it allows people to travel at the speed equal or even greater than the speed of light to meet their love ones. With its introduction for commercial travel for the past few decades, it has allowed a civilization of expand it presence in space at a rapid rate.

With the existence of these high speed transportation facilities, it has made space travels less riskier. People no longer need to board starships that will pass through various dangerous territories which exist in space, such as black holes, asteroid and magnetic fields and territories controlled by hostile forces like pirates, terrorist and such.

The lesser demand for starships for public and goods transportation had allowed the starship building industry to channel their resource to build more ships, that are designed for warfare to combat such threat which lurks around them. With better efficiency in using of the resources around them, a new age of prosperity has dawn for mankind.

Sakuraba Yuuto, who is Japanese decent, is now officially 21 years old, making him no longer a minor according to the laws of the Earth Federation. To celebrate his passage to adulthood, his family have arrange a holiday to earth, where they will be visiting his ancestral home in Hokkaido, Japan.

The family used to stay there, but due to the reason for better career prospects, they moved to the orbital agriculture colony of Pasture which is orbiting around Saturn. As the relocation happened when he was still a child, he hardly has any recollection the place he was born. Though far apart, they still keep in touch with their relatives who are still staying there, through teleconferencing and occasionally exchanging mails through the cosmic network system.

This very day however is different, as Yuuto's family would like to celebrate his way to adulthood with the rest of the clan. At their ancestral home, they will celebrate his birthday in a debutante manner, where his parents will attempt to match him with same of ladies around his age, who will be present there as his potential suitor.

Although Yuuto have a little dislike for large gatherings, it is an event which only comes once in a life time. Therefore, he decided to comply with his parents wishes to make them happy. Besides, once the event is over, he will be finally free to do what he wants, because he is now an adult. This is the new life that he is looking forward to have, as he already had a job and will be allowed to live on his own now.

As Yuuto's parents have already arrived in Hokkaido earlier with his elder sister, Yuuto will be travelling alone to his ancestral home. This arrangement happened as he had an important matter to attend to, which is final evaluation as an apprentice of mushroom cultivator. Among all the apprenticeship in agriculture, the mushroom trade craft apprenticeship is the hardest among all of them, because many mushrooms that is being cultivated are very sensitive to contamination.

With his test is now completed, he went back home to pack some of his items before going to the transporter hub which is located near his residence. The transporter hub today is experiencing a heavier than usual load of people who are commuting around, due to the New Year celebration which is around the corner.

It took a while for him to wait for his turn to travel through the hub, because it is a long wait. Still it is a worth one, as there are friends and family members that he is looking forward to meet up at his birthday party that day. Stepping into the transporter pad in the transporter facility, system begins to process his destination request, which is the major transporter hub in Hokkaido. Dematerializing Yuuto, the system send him immediately to his destination. All is fine until his arrival at the transporter hub in Hokkaido, where something terribly gone wrong upon his arrival.

Materializing in the hub, Yuuto is being greeted with a gruesome expression from his parents upon his arrival at the transporter hub in Hokkaido. His mother fainted and his father was speechless, while his elder sister, Asagi was rather a little excited for some unknown reasons. Speaking to them, Yuuto now realizes what went wrong with him upon hearing his new voice.

This incident caused a pandemonium in the Sakuraba clan, as everything which is being prepared for Yuuto’s birthday is now totally in disorder as Yuuto is now a lady. Not wishing to extend the magnitude of the disaster, they are forced to cancel her birthday party while waiting for expects to find out what are the causes for this incident.

The company who had provided the transportation service was not spared, as they came under fire under the assumption of negligence by the public. All is in a mess, putting everyone in a state of misery especially to the family and their clan, the Sakuraba.

The reason why everyone loses their head was due to the nature of this incident which is unprecedented. Experts who are tasked to investigate this matter found that there is a minor glitch in the transporter system information network, caused by the data overload which had happened at the eve of the festival, which is the New Year festival. Further investigation reveal that the problem is preventable, prompting an outrage by the people who are the consumers of their services.

The data overload which has cause a glitch, had corrupted some portion of the data in transportation matrix which is transporting Yuuto. This causes him to be materialized as a woman version of him instead of his original self, who is suppose to be a male.

The family files a lawsuit to the company under the basis of negligence as the cause for this incident. Like any other lawsuits, it takes time for it to be resolved in court. While waiting for case to be resolve, Yuuto will have to get used to be a woman for a while at the time being much to her sister’s delight, as she can have a younger sister to tend to for a while, something that she sometimes wished for in her youth.

Months passes with the court reaching to the verdict that the company is guilty of negligence. They are ordered to pay a substantial sum of compensation to the family, much to the family’s relieve. It also clears them from speculation that their child is born with gender issues, liberating them from the stigma of their community.

For Yuuto, she has gotten used to her new life as a lady now. Calling herself Tomoko, she is now in a romantic relationship with a man of her choice. There are hurdles faced by the couple because of her past and her family, but she is optimistic that both of them can endure and overcome them.
