Sigh...

'How'd it end up like this?...' that thought rang through the boy's head.

BUM...

BUM...

Oz glanced above to him to see the hulking creature stalking towards him from across the desolate cave, sending tremors through the dry air and quaking the earthen walls.

With that, as his eyes began to shut, he thought back to his encounter with this beast.

Not even 5 minutes prior...

.

.

.

"Bitch!"

BAMM!

The creature was sent tumbling back, yet stayed on its buckling feet before coming to a skidding stop and letting out a harsh cry.

It rushed the boy on all 4's once more as Oz sprinted forward in return.

BAM!

BAM!!

BAM!!!!

The sound of blows rang out through the cave, causing the creaky passageway to moan and shake in agony.

Rubble scattered from the ceiling, with human-head-sized rocks beginning to peel off the roof and splatter onto the floor.

Yet, the two danced around the indoor meteor shower, circling one another like a dance recital and exchanging blows.

BAM!

BAM!!

One at a time, they were sent flying backward into the wall, causing tremors to rumble out before the struck foe would leap back up and exchange blows once more, ripping the other into shreds as with each strike, pieces of them shredded off like unneeded cloth.

Drip...

Drip...

Yet, after some time, enough was enough, as the ebony-skinned boy stood hunched over in front of the vile creature, panting heavily and oozing from his facial orifices and the wounds caked across his entire body.

A lake of inner liquids was beginning to rise over the floor; however, at that moment, Oz's eyes lit up with a golden light, and his lips deformed into a deranged smile that seemed to lack any sanity left alongside releasing a vicious battle cry that was so primal it sounded more beastly than the creature across from him.

"Heh... Heh..." the boy's deranged laughter sang out with each exhausted gasp.

He stomped on the ground, creating a crater and releasing a deadly force that seemed to radiate from him.

The creature across from him watched in shock; was it afraid?

It had not expected such a dangerous feeling from prey like this.

However, before Oz could even step forward, a subtle pitter-pattering of footsteps jotted from up behind him, and then suddenly, before he could react, a sharp pain struck the back of his head.

BANG!

.

.

.

'How'd it end up like this?'

Now back to the present as the creature lurched towards him.

Its furry bipedal body, which was still mostly concealed by shadows, began to make its way over.

However, alongside this creature was another one, though slightly shorter, yet still possessing that terrifying aura about it.

The creatures looked down in a strange, twisted look of satisfaction.

Their bloodshot eyes pierced through the darkness.

The hunt had finally come to an end, and their prey was now powerless before it.

Red rivers ran along the surrounding walls and ceiling, coating its body, as crimson fluids ran down and led back to the young boy on the ground who lay in the steadily rising puddle.

His strained breath slowed more and more as time progressed.

'Heh, this thing is such a pain in the @$$. Even breathing hurts.'

The sweet aroma of death stung the boy's nostrils, even overpowering the potent smell of these foul creatures.

"Heh," the boy chuckled out alongside a clump of blood.

He struggled to lift his hand, feeling the leaky lump at the back of his head.

The faint light from the surrounding torches looked like blurry fireflies as he struggled to keep his wits about him, his consciousness easing in and out.

Huff

Huff

'Gotta stay awake... gotta stay awake...'

Murky tear red tears began to flow from his eyes, 'I... I just can't catch a break, can I.'

The creatures were only a leg-length away, eyeing their prey like a cat playing with its food.

What were these things?

He didn't know.

What did they want?

Dunno, but him being dead was probably part of it.

So...

"Ughh... AAAAAAGHH!!"

The boy released a primal scream as he fought back tears and forced himself to his feet.

The cracking and popping of bones filled the silent cave as the creatures watched on in fascination.

Beyond the veil of shadows, the sound of licked lips could be heard.

They were going to savor this prey of theirs.

Yet, this prey, this boy, Oz, would not go down without a fight.

He stared on with a hateful gaze as now he wobbly stood across from the two, swaying back and forth as he tried his hardest to keep his balance and his consciousness.

"Heh... heheh..." the flickering lights cast a haunting shadow on the hopeless boy's face as his curly hair dropped down his face, "I hate this place."

WHOOOOOSH!!

And with that, like an alarm had been set off, the two creatures rushed him, each pushing towards him from both sides.

The boy grimaced as he quickly jumped back, yet the two bipedal creatures continued to chase; ominous cackles rang out as they gave chase.

WHOOOOSH!

The slightly larger creature that approached from his left came forward and swung its claw.

Oz ducked and sent a left punch toward its rib cage.

BOOOOM!

However, as soon as that blow landed, a searing pain tingled through his stomach on the right, "gughh!"

He bit his teeth as he quickly turned and delivered a blow toward the cause of this pain, the smaller creature on the right.

BOOOM!

The creature was sent tumbling back, Oz began to rush forward to finish it off, yet a sharp pain on the boy's back stopped him in his tracks, "gahhh!"

"Ughhhh!" Oz screamed out in rage as he delivered a back kick right into the taller creature, sending it flying back.

Drip...

Drip...

The boy's breathing was akin to the wails of a dying creature.

His end was nearing, yet, perhaps he was too stubborn to admit it.

'Damnit, damnit, damnit!'

"I ain't fukin dyin'!"

With that, he rushed the creature he had just back-kicked.

As it was getting up from the wall, it was tackled once more as the barely conscious boy began pelting it with a flurry of attacks!

GRRRR!!

The creature screamed out in rage as it pushed the boy off and began rushing him down.

Pitter-patting steps sounded out behind him as a smile spread across Oz's face.

As the smaller beast tried to strike him from behind, the boy quickly ducked and stepped back under the swing before kicking it forward.

The large creature caught this smaller one carefully as the boy's gleeful grin fully spread into a demonic smile, "yes!"

The boy flew forward with a spinning kick toward the smaller creature's head, sending its body spiraling away.

SQUEEEE!

The large creature reached and called out, yet now that it was distracted, Oz would not let this opportunity pass as he tackled it once more into the wall and continued his flurry of blows.

"Die! Die! Die! Die! Die!"

Each blow planted its skull further and further into the floor, yet with each blow, he felt the bones in his hands grind into dust.

The sensation in his hands was beginning to diminish.

Regardless, the boy lifted his left hand, glop and organs drooped from his shaky fist, and his whole body was painted crimson.

His bloodshot eyes that gleamed with golden insanity glared at the creature.

Its eyes begged for forgiveness as it, too, wanted to live.

The two locked eyes.

Did it really have to die?

Oz, now straddled on top of the barely conscious beast, paused.

CHOMP!!

With barely any sensation left in his body, he slowly craned his head back to see the smaller creature's jagged teeth completely pierced into his forearm.

Now up close, he was able to make out its features.

Its face was similar to the rotter's from before, except larger and bipedal, though smaller than the creature beneath him.

Oz slowly turned back to the creature below him, its pitiful look now replaced with a smug grin.

"Heh," Oz softly chuckled.

SPLAT!!!

He launched his right hand into the creature's face and pierced its eye with numb fingers, causing it to writhe in agony.

Its ally that had chomped onto his left arm bit down harder, yet Oz continued nonetheless.

The creature below him spasmed and struggled, pleading with all its might.

Yet, with his same right hand, Oz pushed down even further till he could go no further, allowing his hands to rub up against the interior skull, solidifying his firm death grip on its slimy brain that splashed apart like a bitter fruit.

The soft, warm goop splooshed around his hand and squirted onto him, coating him in its life juice.

Finally, it stopped, dropping and lying still.

SQUREEEE!

The creature that had been munching on Oz's arm opened its mouth to cry out.

A sly grin spread across his face at the sound of this as he took his right hand and swooped his right hand onto its neck, choking it and slamming it into the ground.

"Ughh..." Oz grimaced as he attempted to follow up with a left-handed punch.

Nevertheless, keeping his tempo, he adjusted himself and stomped down onto the creature's face.

BAM!

SQUREEEE!!

It cried in pain and sorrow.

"Heheheh..." deranged laughter echoed throughout alongside animalistic pleas.

BAM!

SQUREEEEE!!!

BAM!

SQUR-

BAM!!

sq-

With each blow, its voice became fainter until...

Huff huff

Oz now stood over the creature, its face now flattened into a pancake-like condition.

The close brush of death and the surging adrenaline left him feeling numb, as he did his best to keep his balance as he observed his fallen foe.

Under the dim torch lights, he could see a marking on its chest, a triangle with symbols in the middle.

He looked back toward the bigger rat to see a similar marking.

Questions filled the boy's fuzzy mind, "pair?"

Yet, thinking back to how this bigger creature had stepped in to save the smaller one, an understanding glow shone in his eyes, "lovers, heh."

With that, he waddled down the moist passageway to reunite and win this tournament.

Behind him, the forsaken corpses of the beast lovers rotted unknown to any, and underneath the cramped caverns.

The soft glow of the torch lights, dancing their sorrowful tunes.
