"Ugh..."

The green-haired man slowly woke up and opened his eyes.

"Where… am… I?"

He looked around and he saw a girl sitting beside his bed. His eyes opened wide, and then sat up to grab the woman by the shoulders.

"Karlah…! Are you… alright…?"

"I'm sorry, I am not Karlah. Was she the priestess in the forest?"

Brittanya touched the man's arm to calm him down. The man let go of her shoulders.

"Yes…"

Reality slowly sank into the man's head. He was looking down, trying to recall everything that happened.

"Can you… tell me what happened there in the forest?"

Brittanya calmly waited and stared at the man.

"I don't… remember…"

He was now staring blankly into air.

"I see. You don't need to rush it. Just rest here for a while."

Brittanya gently smiled at him.

"Where… are we…?"

He slowly looked up and stared at Brittanya.

"We're in a house inside Jiputin. Some nice people helped us. I'll tell them to bring you food."

Brittanya stood up and went to the door. She then went outside the room and closed the door.

"Karlah…"

The man clenched his fists and closed his eyes. Tears started to fall down his cheeks.

---

Jaegar was walking around town to gather information about the situation concerning savage monster attacks. As he was passing through a busy street, he heard some people talking loudly. He stopped in front of a fruit stall to listen in on the conversation that was happening behind him.

"I warned her not to have anything to do with that man."

A young woman wearing clothing from the clergy was talking to her male companion.

"After those reports of monster attacks nearby, she should have known better… I heard they found her body after she was reported missing a few days ago."

The man she was talking to was also wearing clergy clothing. He shook his head as he conveyed the news to his companion.

"She should have listened to me…"

The woman had tears forming in her eyes as she stared at the ground.

"But what about the man she took care of? Was he found, too?"

The woman then lifted her head when she remembered this detail.

"Maybe? They were not entirely sure, because according to what I heard, there was a lot of body parts scattered near where they found her."

The man somehow lowered his voice while looking around. The woman then gasped at the shocking detail.

"Then… there really is a fierce monster waiting out there to attack us…!"

The woman tightly grabbed the sleeve of the clergy man as she stared at him.

Jaegar then walked away from the two as he started to piece together the details of what really happened. He then headed back to the house where Brittanya and the other guy were staying at.

---

"Hey, is he awake yet?"

Jaegar went inside of the house that helped them when they first came into town. There was a little girl that greeted him at the door.

"Yep."

"I see. Thanks for the update, girly."

He squatted down to pat the head of the girl. She smiled while being patted on the head.

"Did you find out anything?"

Brittanya went to the doorway to meet Jaegar.

"Yeah, a little. But we have to talk to him first. There are still things that are bothering me…"

Jaegar stood up and looked directly at Brittanya.

"I don't know if it's the right time to talk to him… He may still be in a state of shock, after all that had happened to him…"

Brittanya averted Jaegar's gaze.

"If we want to get rid of this 'monster', then getting the details out of him right away will help."

Jaegar walked past Brittanya and headed upstairs. Brittanya let out a sigh before going up the stairs as well.

---

"You should eat up. No need to be shy."

An elderly woman was standing beside the bed of the man. She gave him a tray of food comprising of bread and some soup.

"Thank you…"

The man was just looking at the tray on his lap.

"How are you feeling now?"

She was now preparing a change of new clothes for the man.

"I'm… fine…"

He answered without looking at the old woman.

"That's good to hear, then. When they brought you here two days ago, I was worried it was too late for you. You were covered in blood. Luckily there were only slight wounds on you."

The woman slightly smiled as she recounted the events.

The man didn't react to what she just said. The door of the room then suddenly opened and Jaegar entered, followed by Brittanya.

"Hey, how are you doing?"

Jaegar went straight to stand beside the man's bed.

"You should knock first, you know! Sorry for the intrusion, madam."

Brittanya was lightly scolding Jaegar while she closed the door. She then slightly bowed at the old woman.

"No worries, I just finished preparing new clothes for him. I'll be downstairs if you need me."

The elderly woman then left the room and closed the door behind her.

"Now that she's out of here, I guess we can talk clearly now… Tell me, why did you kill all those people?"

Jaegar was staring at the man sitting on the bed.

"Hey, Jaegar! What are you saying to him?! Can't you see he's a victim here, as well?"

Brittanya stomped her foot as she glared at Jaegar.

"That's what I also thought at first. But, after hearing the chatter outside, I'm convinced this guy did it."

Jaegar never removed his gaze from the man.

"That's not too much to go on—"

"He's… right. I… did it."

The man spoke up without looking at them.

"No…"

Brittanya took a step back while she covered her mouth with her two hands.

"In fact, there were no monsters in that forest, only animals. Why is that?"

Jaegar was still pressing the man for answers.

"I'll tell you… everything."

The man finally looked at Jaegar with a determined look.

---

Before the man started to talk, both Jaegar and Brittanya took a chair and sat near the man's bedside. They both looked at him in anticipation of what the man would tell them.

"I… have lived… with only… the animals… in the mountains… for a long time… One day… Karlah got lost… in the woods… and I helped her… get back to town… Told her to… never go back out there… since it is… dangerous…"

The man just stared at his lap. Brittanya transferred his tray of food to the top of the nearby drawer.

"But… she still… went back… many times… to give me food… teach me things… talk to my friends… talk to me… And then… on a day we… promised to meet again… she didn't arrive… I… looked around… for a long time… until I saw her… with a group of mercenaries…! After that… I blacked out… and now… I'm here…"

The man closed his eyes as he grasped the sheets of the bed. He gritted his teeth while remembering the scene that caused the incident.

"I knew it."

Jaegar was looking sternly at the man quietly sitting on the bed.

"So… were you really the one who killed them, and even the girl?"

Brittanya clasped her hands together as she intently stared at the man.

"I… I can't… control it..."

The man was looking down at both his shaking hands.

"She just… wanted to help me… and my friends… But… those mercenaries…! They… they violated her…! It's all… my fault…!"

He clenched his fists and closed his eyes. Anger was now emanating in his voice.

"So, you went berserk, huh…"

Jaegar never averted his gaze from the man.

"You're dangerous. You better leave this house once you can stand up."

Jaegar then stood up from his chair, still facing the man.

"Hey, he's also a victim here! That's very much clear now."

Brittanya then stood in between Jaegar and the man. She had her eyebrows furrowed while looking at Jaegar.

"He's right… I should… leave now…"

The man tried to stand up from the bed.

"Hold it right there. You need to rest. We'll figure things out later, okay?"

Brittanya grabbed him by the shoulders and pushed him back to lie down on the bed.  She smiled at him and then dragged Jaegar out of the room.

---

After they left the room, Brittanya and Jaegar decided to go outside of the house and walk around town. Brittanya kept on glancing at Jaegar before finally talking.

"He said he had friends together with that girl, maybe some could have survived and are in this town."

Brittanya was talking aloud to herself.

"By friends, he meant all those animals in the forest."

Jaegar answered nonchalantly.

"How can you tell?"

"Didn't I tell you earlier that there were no monsters in the forest? He must have eliminated most, if not all, in that area. Only the small animals were left. He must have been protecting them, or something."

Jaegar looked up as he explained things to Brittanya.

"Wow, you're good at making assumptions!"

She was genuinely praising Jaegar while tapping his back.

"If you're complimenting me, you're doing a terrible job at it."

Jaegar squinted at Brittanya.

"But in any case, what's the difference between monsters and plain animals? They all look like monsters to me. I don't get it…"

Brittanya grabbed her chin as she looked downward.

"Basically, monsters are those that attack people. And not all monsters look like animals. But for animals, well they just go about their business without getting aggressive towards humans. Something like that, as far as what the Knight's Order taught us, anyway."

Jaegar crossed his arms as he continued his lecture.

"That makes sense."

Brittanya tilted her head sideways as the information sunk in her head.

While they continued walking around town, they saw some people that were wearing different kinds of armor and equipment. Those people were talking loudly while frantically looking for someone or something.

"I heard someone saw a bloodied guy being brought inside Jiputin the other day. He must be the guy who killed our comrades."

One of them spoke to his companion while they were passing by Brittanya and Jaegar.

"He won't get away with what he did!"

The companion responded while still within earshot of the two. Brittanya and Jaegar looked at each other and then ran back toward the house where they left the man.
