The pair exited the town of Yuberden and started to walk towards Jiputin. They needed to trek through several smaller mountains in order to reach the next town. After a few hours of walking, they were now walking along a mountain trail.
"You didn't have to come if you wanted to stay there, you know."
Jaegar started talking while he was a few steps ahead of Brittanya.
"I… still have things I have to do."
Brittanya looked up at the sky with a faint smile on her face.
"Like what?"
Jaegar turned his head to look at her.
"Prove that I am the greatest mage."
She stared back at Jaegar and answered with sheer determination in her eyes.
"Aren't you already?"
He turned his head again to look forward while he also placed his hands behind his head.
"Thanks, Jaegar."
Brittanya couldn't help but smile.
"For what? I haven't done anything worth thanking me for."
Jaeger kept looking ahead on their path.
"Well, just because."
Brittanya giggled lightly.

Just before the night sky came, the two of them decided to stop walking for the day and made camp along the mountain trail covered by trees. Jaegar started a fire with the branches that were lying around on the ground. Then, the two of them sat around the fire and ate bread buns that were given by Avila the other day.
"I kind of miss the cooking of that brat…"
Jaegar looked at the piece of bread in his hand as he chewed the almost stale bun.
"It seems like you are the one who should have stayed back, then."
Brittanya smiled as she held her bread with both of her hands.
"Hey… Can you cook?"
He glanced at Brittanya while still chewing the bread.
"Nope."
She smiled back at him.
"Yeah, it's my fault for getting my hopes up."
Jaegar hung his head.
After a while, it became dark around them as night time finally came. The only light that was there came from their campfire. In the distance along the trail, two floating lights started to approach Jaegar and Brittanya.
The two of them watched intently as the light became closer and closer to them. A few more moments later, the figure of two men carrying torches came into their view.
"Oh, I didn't think there are people camping along this trail."
One of the men greeted Jaegar and Brittanya. He wore a large backpack behind his back, filled completely with different items.
"Would you mind if we rested here for a bit?"
The other man looked at Jaegar. This one carried a large satchel also full and almost ready to burst.
"No, go ahead."
Jaegar pointed toward the vacant spaces around their campfire.
The two men thanked Jaegar and then put down their bags on the ground. They then both sat down. The guy with the backpack reached inside his bag and took out something at was covered in cloth. He then peeled the cloth off the item. There were strips of dried meat inside.
"Here, take some. You guys can pair it with your bread."
The guy offered the meat toward Jaegar and Brittanya. They both looked at each other and nodded. Brittanya even wiped with her arm the drool that was falling from her mouth. The two of them then thanked him. The guy then smiled back at them.
---
After finishing their meal, Jaegar then asked some questions to the two men that showed up.
"By any chance, did you two come from Jiputin?"
Jaegar was leaning on a large rock behind him, with his arm on top of his knee.
"Ah, yes. We were actually in a hurry to get out of that place."
The guy with the satchel drank what smelled like alcohol from his portable container, made of leather or some other hardened cloth.
"Really? Why is that? Is it because of the rumored monster?"
Brittanya intently looked at the guy who was drinking.
"Oh, it's not just a rumor. Trust me, missy. Once you see what that… thing did, you'd want to get out of that place as well."
The guy took another swig.
"What exactly is that monster…?"

Jaegar then leaned closer to the two men.
"No one has actually seen it. All we know is that it's attacking other monsters in the area."
The guy who gave them meat then stared into the fire.
"Wait… Isn't that a good thing?"
Brittanya raised her hand around the level of her head.
"Well, the way the bodies of the monsters were left behind… Let's just say they died in a horrific way. And who knows when it will start to attack humans!"
The guy who was drinking pointed his container toward Brittanya with his now shaking hand.
"Now that you mention it… When we left town, I heard rumors that someone has already been missing for a few days…"
The other guy clasped his hands together and rested his head on top of his hands.
"I'm just glad… we got out of there… when we did…"
The guy that kept drinking finally finished his booze with one large gulp. After emptying the container, he swayed in place before falling back on the ground. A few moments later, he was already snoring.
Jaegar and Brittanya then nodded at each other.
"I have to get rid of it as soon as possible."
Jaegar then leaned back on the rock again and closed his eyes.

After another day, the two have already traversed a few short mountains and were nearing the town of Jiputin. The town could be finally seen while they were going down on the last mountain trail.
While they were walking near a cliff, they saw the trees at the foot of the mountain rattle as birds flew away. They looked at each other and nodded, then ran downwards the cliff to head directly to the scene. When they reached the area where they first saw the commotion, what they saw was something unbelievable.
"What the hell… happened here?"
Jaegar's brows furrowed as he surveyed the surroundings.
"Are those… people?"
Brittanya covered her mouth with her hand.
The scene in question was indeed gruesome. Blood was sprayed and splashed all over the trees and on the ground. There were also dismembered parts of humans lying around nearby. Pieces of different armor and clothing were scattered as well.
"Be careful, there might be a monster still lurking around here."
Jaegar looked around, turning his head in every direction.
As both of them started to search for monsters, Brittanya saw something in the distance. She stared for a moment before reacting.
"Hey, look over there!"
Brittanya saw a young woman lying on the ground, a few feet away from the bloodied area. They rushed toward her.
"Hey! Are you alright?!"
Jaegar kneeled down beside the woman and raised her body in his arms.
"Jaegar, I think it's too late…"
Brittanya pointed at the gaping hole the woman had in her stomach. Blood had already covered the woman's clergy clothing.
"She must have been a healer. Maybe those are her comrades?"
Brittanya then also kneeled down and tightly held the young woman's hand.
While both of them were still looking after the body of the woman, a shadowy figure emerged from the trees behind them. They were alerted of its presence and quickly faced toward it. The bloodlust coming from it was unmistakable.
"Grr…"
The figure was slowly moving toward them. When it was clearly in view, the two was taken aback by what they saw. It was a man holding an arrow in his right hand. He had messy green hair, long enough to cover his face. His clothes were tattered with scratches, as if he was attacked by monsters before.
"Who is that? Is he a survivor?"
Brittanya looked at the person.
Jaegar was slowly putting down the body of the woman while never averting his gaze at the new presence that appeared before them.
"Do you know what happened here?"
Brittanya then asked the person with concern in her voice. She held out her hand to reach out to him.
The man growled fiercely and then rushed toward Brittanya with unexpected speed. He had his arrow in his hand, ready to stab her in the head. She couldn't react in time as she was caught by surprise. When the arrow was about to reach her face, Jaegar grabbed the man's arm from behind to stop him in his tracks.
The man looked at Jaegar and then swung his arm that was being held, and it sent Jaegar flying toward a tree. Brittanya jumped back a few steps but the man kept on rushing toward her. She was looking for a chance to cast her spell, but the man was keeping close distance.
She then bumped into a tree and had nowhere else to jump back into. She was about to be stabbed by the man, when the man stopped and stood for a while before collapsing to the ground. Jaegar struck his arm on the back of the man's neck.
"Thanks. I was caught by surprise."
Brittanya looked at the unconscious man.
"That seemed to be the case. I was surprised, too."
Jaegar fixed his gauntlet that seemed to loosen a bit.
"So, what do we do now?"
She looked at Jaegar.
